Upon my 4th read-through of Book of the New Sun after a gap of 10 years, I bit, and bought this book. Warning: if you look up characters/names you will get spoilers. The descriptions are pretty complete which means you find out things like who dies, who is not human, etc. That could be a bummer if you do not already know the story. But for the person who is reading the series for the second (or more) time, this is a good companion. Some of the info is lacking a bit, and the lexicon is not totally complete - this is why I give it 4 stars. That said, the research to find out the modern-world definitions of some of the archaic language is admirable. And that said, it's fun to have some extra info at your side as you navigate through what is arguably one of the best contributions to Sci-Fi/Fantasy in the history of the genre.

This is an essential companion to the Urth series by Gene Wolfe. a labyrinthine work which traverses space and time in mind-boggling tangles. Unfamiliar terms, character summaries, and plot lines are nicely sorted out here, letting you go back and revisit parts of the books which were heretofore shrouded in incomprehension. It's always fun to pick an entry in this book to unravel.

One of the few science fiction series I come back to again and again is Gene Wolfe's "Book of the New Sun". I consider it the most successful attempt to depict the remote future. One of the ways Wolfe achieves this is with language, using obscure and archaic English words to describe things which are at the borders of the reader's understanding. When I was first reading the series, a friend recommended that I keep an unabridged dictionary handy. That was and remains good advice, but Lexicon Urthus is more valuable. It includes digressions on folkloric and mythological influences as well as connections between the characters. It identifies *seven* Severians (the protagonist) and traces out the instances of time travel in the series.I recommend reading the "New Sun" series all by itself first to experience the utter strangeness that was, I think, Wolfe's intent. Then pick up this book and marvel at the depth the writer put into it.

Anyone endeavoring a second, more-detailed read of *The Book of the New Sun* should pick up a copy of this to help define all those obscure words Wolfe uses throughout. Andre-Driussi has provided a well-researched, complete lexicon for Urth, which includes a definition and when useful or appropriate a commentary and history where he relates the term to the text and gives real-life historical background. For a first read it can be a bit spoilery but would help a newcomer as well.

This book is incredibly helpful, it contains:- Foreword by Gene Wolfe- 1,000 words, characters, and places defined- A summary of all 4 books that make up the Book of the New SunThe book adds so much flavor and detail to the original text. I'm glad I found this book and if you are reading about Severian's adventures then you should get this book.

An outstanding resource that no fan of Gene Wolfe's Urth Cycle should be without: Wolfe uses a great number of real but archaic words, names, and titles his works, not simply for their sense of antiquity or otherwordliness, but as a deliberate means of giving erudite readers hints of a vastly greater depth. Lexicon Urthus helps light up the vocabulary and subtexts of the Urth Cycle, and reveals countless things you may not have understood, or even suspected to be hidden there.

Book Of The New Sun works on so many levels that a book like this is invaluable. An attentive reader will notice many things not contained here and this contains many things even an attentive reader will miss. The kindle edition could stand to be extensively cross linked, but the ability to search is still worth it!

This lexicon was invaluable for its help in understanding the usage of archaic or antique words that Gene Wolfe used in his Book of the New Sun series. Although, it isn't to hard to go through the novel using only context clues or actually dismissing a few of the more "colorful" words, but it is immensely rewarding to fully grasp the thought or feeling that he is trying to express. I am very grateful to the author of this lexicon, considering that it must have taken a lot of work to compile it.
