We just discovered felting - it is fun. Wanted to get a book for design ideas and basic instructions, and after the 10th book with instructions on how to make bunnies, puppies and kittens I ran into this one! Not that there is anything wrong with bunnies, they are cute - but how many of them can you make before it gets boring? This book gives out-of-the box ideas. Not all the designs will be to everyone's liking (making a cigar out of felt is as appealing to me as a spoonfull of castor oil), but that could probably be said of any project book. On the other hand, some of the projects are really fun and creative (bracelets, monsters, yo-yos), and make you realize there is a world of possibilities out there. As other reviewers pointed out, most of the projects focus on 3d objects, but it gives the basics on how to felt flat objects too. There are not a lot of patterns to cut and follow exactly - but lots of whimsical ideas that you can modify, or elaborate on, and all the basic information you need to take off creating designs of your own.I would recommend this book to anyone looking for clear instructions, and out of the ordinary ideas.

I've been looking for a book to get me started on felting. The videos on youtube just weren't doing it for me. This book took me from, "whaaaaaaa?" to "ooooohhhhh, I get it now" in a matter of minutes. Since everyone learns differently, I suggest using the 'search this book' feature and see if Moxie gets through to you like she did for me. I don't know that I would do the projects in this book (although the voodoo doll earrings are pretty danged cool), but it was fun seeing what someone who thinks outside of the traditional has done with felt. Warning: This is a highly addictive craft! You've been warned ;)

Being a new felter, I bought this book on a whim. Aside from the wonderfully clear (yet not condescending) instructions, it would have been totally worth it just for the Voodoo doll earrings. I'm still laughing, so I can't start making them yet or I will end up poking myself.

I have to say, I love Moxie's sense of humor and her quirkiness. She says she's a self-taught needle felter and this has become a nice addition to my set of books. Her projects are fantastic and fit right in with my bizarre sense of humor. (Sheep of the Dead Finger Puppet!!) I've learned how to turn some of my felted "stuff" into jewelry and look for unique things to add to my felting. Thanks for writing such an entertaining book!

I just bought this book a couple of weeks ago. Of course, I'm not making the actual projects LOL but as a n00b to felting with her own ideas of what she wants to accomplish, this book has been extremely helpful and I'm made numerous things (beads, a bangle similar to the one in the book, working now on a diorama in a teacup!) that I could never have done until I got the book. Eventually, I will get around to making the projects because they look like fun.I also really enjoyed the author's silly humor - she made me laugh several times while I was reading it.

I saw an interview with the author and liked her so much I had to find her book. Sadly, it's a bit too quirky for me but I wish she was my neighbor!

I am the proud owner of over a dozen MadebyMoxie finger puppets and two way cool rings. When I heard a book was in the works, and soon to be released I was so excited! THIS BOOK ROCKS!!! It exceeded my expectations. This is a fun book! Here is what I liked ... Very, very informative as to the tools and instruction. (It is like Moxie is right there walking you through everything.) The tone is TOTAL humor! (You can tell this gal loves what she does.) The projects are varied enough that there is something for everyone. PLUS each project shows a different process and gives more tips. All of this is done with bold, colorful photos, and tons of energy. The title of the book really says it perfectly ... Tips and Tricks ... she has a ton of them. I also liked the resources listed at the end of the book. When you get YOUR copy make sure you don't miss the bottom of page 142. Thanks Moxie! I "felt" awesome reading your book! When is the next awesome book coming out! MORE PROJECTS!

This book is filled with fun, whimsical, weird, unique, and truly inpiring projects that don't just let you push the envelope, they let you blast right on through it! With great instructional information, and clear, enjoyable photographs all throughout, 'I FELT AWESOME' takes the relatively repetitive, humdrum world of needlefelting to a whole new level of art! If you think you're someone who "thinks outside the box", get ready to redefine THAT concept! WHAT box?!!

My 2nd grade, 8 year old who reads around a 800 lexile loves this series!

(Review by the 21 year-old brother of this account user)Frankly, I don't know why they haven't decided to make an Anime based on the Manga! The story is considerably darker, the characters have more personality to them, they stay as close to the original Video Game story as possible, and it's far less repetitive than the Anime. I'm glad that I decided to collect the entire Manga series!

This book has to be read from back from front. Never heard of this . before. Beware

Though I have not read this book yet I have started the series and I can tell you so far I love it. I will be getting all of the books I can get my hands on. I don't understand why I didn't start reading these sooner.

Love it.

Typical Greer - this book delights with no-nonsense pronouncements on the grim consequences of ecological overshoot, but sometimes his mastery of history surpasses that of current affairs. In fact, Greer is at his best when he relies on good historians, like Arnold Toynbee, to burst the bubbles of hype and “progress” that pervade our media. Yet why no mention of one our best current historians of precisely this subject? - Peter Turchin, whose marvelous book “War and Peace and War – the Rise and Fall of Empires” has now been updated to apply to current US history (“Ages of Discord”). Greer misses the greed factor that Turchin has so effectively modeled, though, in turn, Turchin misses the overshoot factor.I tend to agree more with Greer - that we could be headed toward a Roman-type civilizational collapse (“deindustrial North American will support many fewer people than in 1880”, p.40, after “those environmental protections that haven’t been gutted already get flung aside in a frantic quest to keep the system going”, p. 37, citing ruinous top soil losses during the last years of the Roman Empire). He also points out that “externalized costs don’t just go away; one way or another they’re going to be paid.” (p. 93). However Greer views the economics and politics as basically hopeless – that as resources dwindle and uncertainties increase, distrust and political gridlock ensue, so that we can do nothing better than “muddle through, trying to deal with each stage of the descent as it comes into sight, and being prepared to make plenty of mid-course corrections” (p. 224).Yet the real story of survival is that we survive as communities, not as individuals, so we always have economic and political options. In this case, at least half the US GDP is being wasted on the fancy life styles and pet projects of the affluent, if you track the increasing inequality since 1980. Thus there is an enormous potential for a more equitable society, giving us the ability to hunker down, to simplify and sacrifice. That’s simply what cohesive communities do as they face hardship -if they feel that “we’re all in this together”. To Greer this is probably just wishful thinking. Time will tell. And Greer does hold out hope that the coming population decline (up to 95% of the population) could be accomplished by minimal, but continued, increases in the death rate, rather than by cataclysmic events: “of the traditional four horsemen, War, Famine, Pestilence can sit around drinking beer and playing poker. The fourth horseman, in the shape of a modest change in the crude death rate, can do the job all by himself” (p. 45). But he quickly pulls back from this optimistic note, citing “a steady demographic contraction [of the Roman world] overlaid by civil wars, barbarian invasions, economic crises, famines, and epidemics” (p. 46).Greer also makes the interesting point that “new ethnicities emerge” (p. 50) as civilizations transition into dark ages, even after prior ethnic divisions have been ruthlessly exploited by competing factions during the collapse phase. That is, ethnic conflict doesn’t survive “political dissolution, economic implosion, social chaos, demographic collapse, and mass migration” (p. 50).Greer blames the “political class” for driving us over the edge. Yet this is a poor choice of terminology, as it tends to blame politicians and not the economic system that they represent. In fact, even though Greer anticipates that the “free market”, even money, will disappear during the final stages of collapse, he shows us no vision of a better economic system other than of medieval feudalism. Then comes another unfortunate choice of words: he blames “intermediaries” for taking all the wealth between producers and consumers, as fees or taxes, etc. Actually the “intermediaries” are supposed to be providing useful services (law, security, infrastructure, health care, education, religion, etc.) and there is no problem if they provide these services at reasonable prices. The problem comes when the services aren’t provided, or the costs are exorbitant due to the power and greed of the intermediaries. For example, if serfs slave away in grinding poverty while their kings and barons live in the lap of luxury, the costs would be regarded as exorbitant by most people.Greer harbors a lot of animosity toward scientists due to a handful of militant atheists and skeptics, yet never mentions the legions of well funded religious fundamentalists who attack science, especially evolution. Most scientists have a less confrontational attitude toward religion, but are still glad that others are willing to publicly stand up to assaults by religious extremists. Yet it is noteworthy that even a militant atheist like Sam Harris is willing to have a respectful dialogue with a scholar of Islam when that scholar challenges the fundamentalism of his own faith (“Islam and the Future of Tolerance – A Dialogue” by Sam Harris and Maajid Nawaz). Greer might get more respect, perhaps even from Richard Dawkins, if he made a public show of rejection of religious dogma. And it is not just science that is harmed by dogma, but also education in general. Once when I ran for school board (and was elected), one issue was fundamentalist opposition to “critical thinking skills”, since they perceived, correctly, that their children might grow up to reject their dogma if taught these skills. Now nonbelievers outnumber fundamentalists 2 to 1, and Christianity in the US has, all too much, become a decaying religion of empire, rejecting its anti-imperialist roots in the life of Jesus. While Greer thinks that science will be among the first parts of the establishment to put on the chopping block, the public (especially youth) is already voting with their feet, but more against dogmatic religion than science. And finally Greer predicts a new Renaissance rising from the ashes of the Dark Ages ahead. We can even help by preserving great books: “Of our positive achievements, the ones most likely to reach our descendants 5000 years from now are the ones written in books” (p. 222), citing the eternal “Epic of Gilgamesh” from 4000 years ago in Sumeria.

This is a dark vision of the near future. It is one we would all sooner avoid, convincing ourselves that this is science fiction, a doomsday prophet on the fringes of the consumer culture we call reality. But the author is thorough, expansive in his analysis and he provides enough examples that the vision he sees can be observed right around us, here and now. The irony is that most of us who need to consider this vision of deindustrialization and cultural collapse will no doubt engage in whatever form of denial that they hope dill allow them to "have their planet and eat it, too." It won't.This vision is particularly salient with the rise of Trumpland and the death of the old America it replaced. The cannibalization of the infrastructure and material goods by the oligarchs and the political elites who serve their bidding is not even hidden these days as is the internal proletariat fighting among themselves over the dregs and the external proletariat and their warlords poring over our southern border bearing the drugs to anaesthetize a fearful, dying culture who deep down knows the score but is unwilling to deal with it.May this be one of the books the author says we must preserve so that generations to come will have some sense of how this collapse came down even as they curse our generations for inflicting it upon them.

For some years I have been concerned about the possibility of collapse. I have spent a lot of time and effort to learn how it could be prevented. I believe that, given the commitment, we could avoid collapse and make a smooth transition to a low-consumption future that could be more pleasant and humane than the present. If we had continued the first steps taken in the 1970's, and committed to a WWII-scale effort, we could be there now. But since then we have turned resolutely toward the abyss. If I talk about it at all, people shun me, but I can find no alternative to collapse that stands up to scrutiny.John Michael Greer has tackled this head-on, with amazing clarity, humor, and freedom from ideology. Rather than grasping at straws like almost all the rest of the literature, he assumes that it is too late and we are in for it. He delves into history to examine how collapse has played out in previous civilizations. Some of my speculations differ from his, but there is a lot of uncertainty in the attempt to describe a chaotic future. If I were diagnosed with terminal cancer, it would be a kindness if someone could discuss the prognosis openly and honestly with me. It would help me live the rest of my life as positively as possibly, and pass some value on to my heirs. Greer has provided that kindness.

An unsustainable system, cannot be sustained forever: the basic idea behind this book is unquestionably correct. Greer looks at the current state of Western Civilization, particularly North America and applies what history has shown us to expect from a falling civilization. From climate uncertainty to technological collapse to new economies and the inevitable social unrest, Greer puts it all down and gives the reader something to mull over and hopefully prepare for.

Greer is a seer whose vision of our future everyone should read, but with which many will be very uncomfortable. He makes his case in a relentlessly logical manner. His knowledge of history is profound, but not academic. The book has "America" in its title, but he really is talking about civilization in the whole. Many would label Greer a pessimist. In truth, he is a realist.

I never write reviews but this work of Greers is truly spot on. He's an incredibly keen and acute observer and in addition, draws upon vast historical knowledge of past rise and falls of various civilizations. Yet best of all, his unusual ability to include political, economic, social, religious, and environmental knowledge and how all these aspects intertwine and effect a civilizations fall, is truly amazing. A great work!

N.W.A. blew up on hip-hop, entertainment industry and the political realm like a mushroom cloud leaving debris on middle America, law enforcement and the Constitution. Their international influence is still felt today. On the heels of the hit movie Straight Outta Compton comes this awesome new book, filled with new details, such as Easy-E's hustling days, and Ice Cube's relationship with the Nation of Islam and Jewish Defense League. It's great learning how some of these important relationships were made, succeeded and disintegrated into a financial battle royal. It's impossible in any other profession for young men in their late teens and early twenties to become influential millionaires, this book made me feel like an insider toward understanding the entire process. I now wish this could be used as a blueprint for a Netflix Series.

Original Gangstas is a fun and entertaining read. Westhoff packs a lot of detail into an easy-to-read book that puts you in the center of the action. At the same time, Westhoff is a dispassionate observer who reports without injecting any obvious bias into the longstanding debates, disagreements, and mythology surrounding the events that led to this category of music. His years of interviews and thorough investigation paid off with never before heard details that give context to the foundation and growth of a new music genre and the struggles of the artists (and businesspeople) who made it happen. I found his descriptions of the interviews particularly interesting - the additional detail, while not fundamentally necessary to the story, made me picture myself in his shoes as he sat through countless discussions. I wholeheartedly recommend this book!

Mr. Westhoff's latest installment of hip-hop lore, Ben tackles the behemotic tangled mess that is the origins of rap culture in the West. While the recent film Straight Out of Compton revived intrigue in the mysterious story of NWA and West Coast rap, it did not do complete justice to the truth nor had a concrete foundation of detail. There was much left to be desired. Much of what is known of West Coast hip-hop is left to anecdotal accounts or interviews by those who were in the circle of NWA, Tupac, Eazy-E, Ice Cube, etc. Many of those who pioneered rap culture in the West are not alive today.Mr. Westhoff's incredible research, which took a number of years, digs down deep and gets to the truth and dispels the myths. We learn the nitty gritty details of the personal lives of NWA, Tupac, Eazy-E, Ice-Cube, etc. We discover connections between rap groups that were otherwise unknown. Ben also addresses the social and political turmoil of the time with excellent commentary. There is no other book, nor documentary around currently that is as descriptive and as detailed as this book. There is so much detail that it feels as if you are there with the rap icons themselves. This is what journalism is about, and Mr. Westhoff slams it out of the park. Ben sets an example for how journalism should be done. I don't want to spoil the book, but I wish it were longer! I would not be surprised if someday in the far future this book becomes required reading in a college class for the Studies of Hip-Hop Culture. EVERY FAN OF HIP-HOP MUST HAVE THIS BOOK IN THEIR COLLECTION!

This books is so incredible!! I heard about it as a reference that was used for Last Podcast on the Left and I couldn't put the book down! It's so informative and well written; it gives you that fly on the wall feeling. I finished it just wanting to know more!!

Ben Westhoff's new book is probably the best book yet written about the history of Hip Hop music in Los Angeles. I can't say that I agree with all of Ben's conclusions in the book, but he did a lot of research and is a very good writer. Because Ben is so competent a writer, Original Gangstas will be interesting not just to Hip Hop fans, but also to any fans of History in general. Anyone who is a fan of West Coast Hip Hop, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, N.W.A., Ice Cube, Eazy-E, The D.O.C., 2Pac, Death Row Records, etc., in particular, will really enjoy reading this book. I highly recommend it. It belongs on the shelf of any Hip Hop fan.

As of this writing, this is the absolute best resource you're gonna find when it comes to the details on West coast rap/gangster rap history. There's a lot of conflicting information out there, but the way it is told in this book appears to be the most factual account available. No bias; if there are multiple versions of an incident that the author cannot independently verify, he will give you them all and let you make your own judgement. As close to flawless writing as you'll find on this subject. A must read if you're interested in rap history.

Original Gangstas is a thorough and engrossing telling of the rise of West Coast Rap. Mr. Westhoff did extensive research, interviewed countless people, and sifted through fact, opinion, and hearsay like the professional journalist that he is.The characters are all portrayed as the very real, very flawed, and very talented individuals they were. While other books and films chose to ignore some of the darker aspects of these individuals' character and story, Mr. Westhoff dives right in and shows both the good and the bad. He is a true fan of the genre and that helps him express just how groundbreaking this music was as he tells the story of the people who made it.If you are interested at all in music, hip-hop culture, race relations, or the tragic drama that ended the young lives of Eazy-E, Tupac, Biggie, and others, this is a must read.

A very thorough, almost academic look at the beginning of gangster rap. I remember as a kid seeing the magazine covers about the rap wars and hearing about the deaths of Tupac and Notorious B.I.G and this is depth covers it all. I highly recommend it!

This book isn't terrible - but could use some work.** Disclaimer - we only visited Grand Bahama**I expected the do-it-yourself sections to have some tips on where you could drive & wade out to fish, not just list independent guides instead of package deals. I don't consider hiring an independent guide to be doing it myself. Since our trip was not soley for fly fishing, we wanted to get a guide for a day or 2 & maybe do some independent fishing from shore on a couple of days. We did this, but with zero success on the days we fished from shore. Others (including both guides we used) said that fishign from shore could be productive. I had hoped that the book would have had soem tips for this type of fishing for each island. Or just told you if it wasn't a viable option for a specific island.BTW - I can strongly recommend Captain Perry Demeritte, who is listed in this book - he was excellent. All that said, given the selection of books available on this topic, this is probably your best bet. We also still had a great time AND got some fish.

This book is really poorly done. It is a guide book and a poor one at that (not a fishing guide). They have about 15 pages on Turks and Caicos (not in the Bahamas) and no pages on Russel Island (in the Bahamas). Very little about fishing in the other isalnds. This book has very little about fishing other than where to go to hire a guide. You dont need a book for that. That information is available on the internet. I was hoping that this book would have information on where to go on the Islands to catch fish or at least some basic information on what flies to use. It didn't. It literally had no useful information about fishing the Island I am going to (Eluthera). If I wanted a book on what restaurants to eat at or where to get a taxi I would have bought a guide book. The big Islands are covered generally and that's it. The positve reviews must be fakes because this book is by no means a "fly fishing guide". It's a book about these people's favorite hotels, favorite guides, and really nothing at all that is helpful for a person wanting to get prepared for fishing in the Bahamas. Wow was this a waste of money. I feel like a sucker for buyig it.

Well written book with tons of helpful tips. Does everything but put the fish on your hook.

This was a good book that I ordered several years ago (now Nov 2013) to obtain information about all the many destinations that are possible in the Bahamas, their differences and what to expect.

If you fish in the tropics, this is a great guide. Good ideas. A useful reference and refresher. Find it if you can.

This was a good book for my first trip to the Bahamas to look for bonefish. A more specific book about bonefish would probably have been a bit better... something like Chico's book "Bonefish."

I'm not sure you want to read the book to decide your destinationand I'm not sure you want to guy it to read the 3 pages on your destinationby the way it's 5 years old

Good information.

#321,942 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I loved The Kids of the Polk Street School series as a young girl in the late 80's. I still think they are excellent children's literature. Patricia Reilly Giff knows how to write a story from a child's point of view, while instilling the right message. This particular book deals with December. The stories of Hanukkah and Christmas are simply explained (I wish public schools were still allowed to teach the important history behind these holidays). An underlying theme is kindness.

While towards the end of the book the main character does begin to see people for what is inside not outside, thru most of the book the main character constantly refers to Jill as fat. I would estimate the word fat is in the book over 40 times. It also has no uplifting message until the bitter end. My son had to read this book for school, but believe you me I turned in a review with is report. There are better books out there for children the DO celebrate diversity. Look for them instead.

In my opinion, this book is inappropriate for children. One of the main characters in the book is named Jill Simon and she is referred to as “Fat Jill” throughout the book. The other characters also call her dummy and crybaby and talk about how she needs to go on a diet.I am surprised that Scholastic even sells a book like this. Do not buy! I sent this feedback to my child’s teacher who gave the book as a gift without pre-reading it.

Didn't care much for it. Didn't hate it, but didn't like it, either. There are better ways to explore this subject.

This is the only book I've ever thrown in the garbage. I bought my daughter a package of "holiday books" at her school's book fair, and this was in it. I'm so glad I looked over the books before I let her start them. The book THINKS it is a valuable lesson about friendship. What the book ACTUALLY is, is a book about how fat people are worthless unless someone helps them get thinner, or possibly if they give someone else cool gifts. Then they're worthwhile. A little. I skimmed the book before trashing it to make sure I wasn't judging it unfairly, and I wasn't. I heard from a few people that this book is used in anti-bullying campaigns in elementary schools, and I'm going to be asking my child's teacher if they use it and telling them she isn't allowed to be a part of this series of books if they're taught in school. This book is a microcosm of how our culture talks a great game of inclusiveness but in reality overlooks rampant racism/misogyny/hatred.

My daughter was assigned this book in school. The main character (Emily) and other students are extremely cruel to a girl names Jill. They constantly refer to her as being fat and use very cruel names when describing her. The main character does things like give Jill a skinny pencil so Jill will want to be skinny, and leave pictures of vegetables on her desk so she will go on a diet. In the end the girls become friends of course, but Emily still does things like tell Jill she looks good today but crosses her fingers behind her back since she really looks fat like always. After reading this book my 7 year old daughter, who is at a perfectly healthy weight started doing exercises and saying she needed to be skinnier. Prior to reading this book she has never mentioned her own or anyone else's weight. She said she is fat and needs to be skinny. I am disgusted by this book and feel is should not be used in schools. I did let her teacher know about my daughter's reaction. I would not recommend this book to any child and would give it zero stars.

I am a first grade teacher, and I ordered this book from our class Scholastic Book Order. I was hoping to read this book to my class this week as a read aloud. Like always, I sat down today to pre-read this book before I read it to a group of 6 and 7 year olds- I am so happy I did!Like many reviews before me, I was disgusted by the way the author described Jill Simon. Within the first chapter, I noticed the word fat being used at least 5 times, the main character even saying "everything about Jill was fat". Needless to say, I will be looking for another December read aloud. There is so much good literature out there for children, and this book does not fit into that category. Buyer beware!

For heaven's sakes! This book has the message that to have friends, a person needs to learn how to be a friend. Yes, a couple of the kids make or think mean things, but most kids do. In fact, the main character never says these mean things out loud. The point is to use it as a tool for teaching how to treat others kindly and to accept others for who they are. I don't understand all the fuss.

If you are ever stuck with grasping the concepts of any Microsoft program, then a book of this nature is definitely a plus. This book is long but it has several different concepts about Microsoft Project that can help everyone from beginning learners to even those who are more advanced at it. The table of contents directs you to the subject matters and topics are easy to locate and understand in this book. If you are a regular user of Microsoft Project I definitely recommend you adding this book to your personal reference library.

I have read other books on project management but this one clearly stands out because it nicely covers both the basics and advanced material. The book goes into every detail of MS Project 2010 as the title and 1300 pages of content suggest :)The best way to check if it has what you need to know it to quickly look at the table of content (enabled on Amazon for this book).Another great thing is that there is no need to use the CD because the accompanying files are downloadable online. Finally, electronic version of the book comes with the paper version. I simply downloaded it using the code provided on the last page of the book. The only downside is that the book is not hard cover. Hard cover would extend the shelf life of this book which I often use as a reference material. I would be willing to pay a higher price if there was a hard cover version available.

This is an excellent reference manual. I haven't had time to use it a lot yet, but with 1200+ pages it should hopefully answer all my questions.....I bought mine "used" on Amazon for about 1/2 price. When I got it, the book appeared to be brand new....showed no signs of any use.

It had been several years since I had used MS Project. After reviewing this book, I was able to get right back into building cost-loaded schedules. Also a great reference material for any functionality that Project had that you may not use on a daily basis.Highly recommend!

This is a must have reference document if you use MS Project 2010. Very well written. Provides useful tips and instructions.

Microsoft Project 2010 is an excellent reference book for both novice and experienced project managers and MS Project users. It is organized logically so novice users can learn Project in an easy to follow manner, and also so experienced users can find specific information quickly.

Has been a big help bringing me back up to speed on MS Project.

Good referernce

Review

“It will blow the lid off your grill.”—Seattle Weekly's Voracious Blog, Cooking the Books, 6/1/11"What makes this book a wonderful resource is the authors' conviction that by applying traditional Japanese flavors to untraditional Japanese ingredients, home cooks will end up with something unexpected and delicious. . . . With The Japanese Grill, the authors have woven the seemingly disparate cultures and grilling styles to create a cookbook that respects and enriches both."—The Epi-Log, Epicurious.com, 5/20/11"The Japanese Grilltakes grilling to a new, unexpected level, mixing infinitely familiar grilled fare with a bit of the exotic." —Devour Recipe & Food Blog, Cooking Channel, 5/12/11“The land of the rising sun shares its border with barbecue country in this simple and salty collection.”—Publishers Weekly, 3/7/11“From the simple (foil-baked green beans) to the sublime (chashu pork), this book boasts some of the most fabulous grilling recipes ever assembled in one volume. If you consider yourself to be a grill aficionado, you must—and I mean must—own it. Your grill library won’t be complete without it.”—James Oseland, editor in chief of Saveur and author of Cradle of Flavor “A stunning book about one of my favorite grill cultures. You can see how the Japanese have elevated live-fire cooking to the level of art.”—Steven Raichlen, author of Planet Barbecue and host of Primal Grill on PBS “Demystifying the seemingly inapproachable is something that Ono and Salat believe in as much as I do. With The Japanese Grill they have taken on a genre of cooking that every home cook wants to become intimate with but thinks they can’t execute. This book should get a serious workout on kitchen counters around the country. I love it!”—Andrew Zimmern, host of The Travel Channel’s Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern and author of The Bizarre Truth

Again, another book from ono/salat that i love. Their soul cooking book covers everything good that you find everywhere, but this cookbook focuses on grill cooking which is awesome. I love the subtle flavors of chicken grilled with just salt, and this book goes through all the different types of chicken skewers you'd get at a yakitori restaurant (which literally means grilled bird). But in it, also has grilled beef, and grilled vegies that you also find in popular japanese restaurants and izakaya (japanese pubs). Also a very popular thing amongst japanese is the grilled rice ball, which they go over the 2 popular styles of shoyu and miso. Overall, a great way to impress your friends and have some delicious yakitori at home as this book shows you how to cut the chicken as well as season them and setting up the grill correctly using binchotan (japanese charcoal from real hardwood). A must for any Japanese food enthusiast. One thing though, which is suprisingly absent is grilled awabi (abalone), which is very popular at Japanese Onsen Inn's throughout Japan. There are fish and clam, shrimp and lobster, scallop recipes but l was suprised that it didn't have awabi.

Made a wonderful spread for our 9th Anniversary dinner...all ideas from this book! (see pics below):

Because I saw so many conflicting reviews on this book I decided to check it out of the library first. I've had it for three weeks, and I've now ordered my own copy from Amazon. It has so much good information in it: Marinade recipes, techniques for adapting your Weber grill (gas or kettle) to the classic yakitori style of grilling, how to thread your skewers for yakitori, tips for getting the most from your marinades and bastes, and advice on what cuts of meat (fowl, beef, pork, lamb), species of fish, types of veggies to use, and where to get hard-to-find ingredients. This cook book takes classic Yakitori grilling and puts it in a very fresh new light: It takes Yakitori grilling off the in-home table top and shoves it out into our back yards. The authors present the classical approach via our American love of outdoor grilling.I love to grill, BBQ, whatever you want to call it--I'm out in the yard all the time. And because I live in lower Texas, I'm outside cooking more often than not. I've got a smoker, several grills and a setup for open flame. Give me hardwood charcoal, pecan wood from our trees out back, propane; give me a grate, or skewers or a red-hot cast iron griddle: Point is, give me almost any type of food and I'll try to cook it outdoors. I may not be the most "normal" of grillers, but I bet the further South you travel in this great country of ours, the more "normal" I appear to be. Because the more opportunities there are to grill outdoors, the more you embrace it.Problem is, grilling so often, sometimes I need a little creativity boost. I'm unhappy with myself when I start putting the same-ole', same-ole' on the table. American-style barbecue sauce is barbecue sauce; you can change it just so many ways. Same goes for American-style marinades. So there was a time that I got tired of the usual recipes for "BBQ" and grilling in general and I turned to "Fushion" recipes and started incorporating soy sauce, ginger, scallions, hot peppers into my marinades and bastes. Add another culture's grilling style into your repertoire and you're off and running again. So I got cozy with the Asian markets in my vicinity and now I've got a whole cabinet full of Asian sauces and condiments. And that's where I was a month ago: Experimenting. And while I love to experiment, I also love to have some expertise behind my gambles. Now I have this book and it provides a wealth of different marinades and a lot of techniques to make the most of them and to pair them with the right cut of meat, seafood or veggie. Granted, there are a lot of recipes that are "variations on a theme", but in most of those recipes there is a little tidbit of very useful information, and those tidbits of info then feed my "fire" for more creativity.I especially love to prepare whole fish on the grill. This book has an extensive seafood and fish chapter. And, the authors have provided a good variety of fish species as alternatives. I'm very happy with that.If you have investigated Asian markets before, you are probably familiar with most of the ingredients listed. (If you've never been to an Asian market, you really need to do yourself a favor and make a day trip of it--you will be amazed!) Most are pantry shelf items that you can find and keep at home. There are two herbs--shiso (perilla) and mitsuba (Japanese parsley)--that you can grow in your garden. There might be one or two hard-to-find condiments, but they are described in the book with such detail, you can probably make do and concoct your own reasonable substitute, (There it is again: Creativity!).I also have the authors' book: Japanese Hot Pots: Comforting One-Pot Meals. Now, I wasn't so keen on that book as I am on this one. That book does require a lot of fresh veggies and greens that are not available daily in my area. So it wasn't so user-friendly for me. But we have reconfigured our winter garden to incorporate some of the veggies and greens that are used in hot pots, so we're using that book more often. Plus, the more often you use the names and ingredients that go with the names, it all gets easier.I'm very glad to have this book in my cook book collection. I've got a whole shelf on grilling, another shelf for Asian and Japanese, a shelf for seafood and fish, a shelf for beef and pork, many shelves for veggies--this book is a stand-out on any of these shelves!NOTE: If you need to shy away from salt in your diet, you may want to check this out of your library before deciding to purchase it. There is a lot of salt in the sauces and condiments used; a lot of salt in soy sauce and miso pastes. I personally try to avoid a lot of salt in my diet, and I find that I might be able to cut down a touch of salt in these recipes. I also pair these grill recipes with plain rice and steamed veggies. You might never appreciate plain rice until you use it as a counterpoint to a richly flavored, salty taste of grilled meat or fish. After pairing the two together, you will crave the combination more and more often.ANOTHER THOUGHT: I list below a few other cook book titles--not that I consider them as fine as the one I'm reviewing here, but they might work for you: If you like the idea of adding another culture's ingredients to your grill recipes, but think The Japanese Grill contains too many unknown or unfamiliar ingredients, you may want to take a look at some older books: Steven Raichlen was one of the first--if not the first--to start writing about grilling "cultures": The Barbecue! Bible and Planet Barbecue!, and any of the series by Hugh Carpenter and Teri Sandison, like Hot Barbecue (Hot Books). These books would allow you to approach these new flavors at a more leisurely pace.Happy grilling!

I was looking for a good book that could be a gateway into Japanese seasonings and cooking styles, as I love to grill this was a perfect solution. I found the overview of the key seasonings very valuable for stocking up my pantry, and the photos and organization with a chapter on Yakitori, then chapters for the different meats was very practical and make putting together a meal very easy. Great photos too brought me in. For me this broke down any mystery I had around grilled Japanese cooking.

A great cookbook with lots of good sauces. It is defiantly written for the beginner with not much experience in grilling of any kind. The sauces--which is what I bought this for--are good, basic sauces that you can modify to your whim. Use the proportions as a guide and then go to town with additives such as garlic, ginger, chiles, etc etc etc. BE BOLD!!! I purchased all of my initial ingredients on Amazon. They were right in line on pricing with what I can find at the local asian markets (esp with Amazon Prime). Some things I could not find in the asian markets at all I could find on Amazon. BTW, the "Fire Sense Large Yakatori Charcoal Grill" on Amazon is a nuclear-powered grilling machine. If you really want to cook yakitori style this is the one to get.

Opened this book and was amazed with it's contents. It's, as it's name makes clear,. for grilling. Not the time of year here for outdoor cooking. Sent it to my boy who lives in Phoenix and loves cooking., Ate Yakitori while I was in Misawa, Japan and really liked. I found out from this book that it was more than just chicken on a stick.

This book is clearly written for Americans who enjoy grilling and want to broaden their horizon. The national trend is toward smaller portions of meat, shorter cooking times and fantastic flavors, this book is a road map in that direction. Some of the ingredients may be difficult to find in some areas BUT - there is always Amazon. They carry everything you will need or want.I have retired my huge propane fueled "Sunshine" barbie from Australia and work with a Lodge cast iron Hibachi and lump charcoal now. (However, this book will teach you how to configure the grill you have in your backyard to grill all the Japanese delicacies). It is a lot of fun to cook meat fish and vegetables in a matter of minutes for me and my friends.

This is definitely one of the best books I've ever had to purchase for a college class. I found that reading the essays written by teens who grew up in the foster care system to be really interesting and eye opening.

I've never been adopted or in the foster care system. This book is filled with stories written by teens who have experienced it all. I will never be able to fully understand their struggles, but I can say that I have a better understanding now than I did before.
