From the Inside Flap

Millions of Americans have used marijuana at some point in their lives, yet it remains a substance shrouded by myth, misinformation, and mystery. Over the past decades, marijuana has become a remarkable social, economic, and even political force, with a surprising range of advocates and opponents. Now, John Hudak, one of the best known and most cited experts on marijuana legalization, offers an up-to-date, cutting-edge look at how a plant with a tumultuous history has emerged from the shadows of counterculture and illegality.Public policy toward marijuana, especially in the United States, is changing rapidly. Marijuana: A Short History provides a brief yet compelling narrative that discusses the social and cultural history of marijuana but also tells us how a once vilified plant has been transformed into a mainstream public policy issue. Focusing on politics, media, government, and education, Hudak explains why public policy has changed, and what that change might mean for marijuana’s future place in society.

This brief history of the mild hallucinogen marijuana is written by John Hudak who researched the drug and has written an accurate account of how it has been misrepresented for political and racist purposes since the early 20th century. Now, as we are well into the 21st century, marijuana still sits beside heroin and other dangerous drugs as a Schedule 1 drug. Makes one wonder why such a medically useful drug is still being misrepresented. Political and racist motives?!I would have given this little book five stars except it may not be the most exciting book you will ever read, but it will surely open your eyes to the machinations of those who have something to gain by keeping a medically useful drug where it clearly doesn't belong.I suggest that you research marijuana (cannabis) yourself. Several states have approved its use for medical and recreational use. Meanwhile, such truly dangerous drugs like alcohol and tobacco can be bought at your corner grocery store. This proves that propaganda works. The moral here is that you must never make a judgment without first determining for yourself if it's true or not.Read this little book by a respected researcher to see the truth. The truth will set you free...if we can just vote the opponents out of office.

Excellent book with a lot of facts. Should be required reading in high school. This book, besides showing that cannabis is not the evil plant that politicians made it out to be (the medical community has repeatedly shown that it is not an evil, but a medically useful plant), explains how a few politicians with an agenda can mislead an uneducated public. The book shows how a few racist people in politically important positions can ruin the lives of many people in their racist pursuits.

A must read for everyone. After this, read "Smoke Signals: A Social History Of Marijuana" by Martin Lee. You begin to understand that cannabis is a political weapon for greed and profit by drug cartels, law enforcement, lawyers, private prisons. No one has ever died of an overdose of pot. Legalize it. Grow up American. And, I do not use.

Great book for the history of weed. Very informative. You will be surprised to learn why hemp is under so muchscrutiny. Good read.

Casual read in about 1-2 week's time. A neatly organized, remarkably neutral yet engaging digest on one of today's most politically-charged hot button issues. Hudak expertly navigates the rich historical nuances of cannabis without getting lost in the weeds along the way.

Easy read that exposes the lies about cannabis

A concise and unbiased review of a very interesting subject.

This book provides a fairly well done history on how we got to our present situation and how, at least with marijuana, we may move forward in a logical and responsible manner.

The cats have had it with humans. They're done with us telling them "No." They're done with us ignoring their demands. They're done with us rubbing them the wrong way, often from butt to head. But now they've gathered to reclaim their voice and declare their intent with such anthems of rebellion as "I Need This to Stop," "What Do I Do with My Anger," and "Things No One Can Ever Take Away from Me."

The cats in this book don't like the I-can-haz-cheezburger cats. They don't dislike them, really. They pity them. Where those cats -- lesser cats, simple cats, cats with no real sense of themselves -- abase themselves for a few tender snacks from a can, these cats get the can open and eat the treats themselves. Where those cats purr, these cats roar softly. Where those cats vamp in Etsy holiday hats, chant "meow meow meow meow" or ignore Gene Shalit trying to feed them, these cats store weapons in a cache under the litter and prepare for the beginning of the End of Times.Marciuliano's cats, now in their latest volume, are no one's kitties. They're both aware of our co-evolved status and of its newly fibrous state -- "Living with you / is not about being yours / it's about being / ours..." These aren't domesticated dog companions; they're barely tamed and constrained hunters, on the cusp of a moment where they pass some singularity and seize control, for what purpose, it's never clear, but it's not one of human comfort. ("We're not anti-people/ we're pro-cat / and the two are not exclusive / unless you make it so.")Honestly, these poems are for people who love cats for what they are, not for being dog wannabes that have the good manners to use a box instead of requiring the outdoors (sometimes). Indeed, many of these cats don't do that at all: They use the sweater in a more egalitarian and absorbent fashion, the way the proletariat repurposed the former palatial city houses in St. Petersburg in "Doctor Zhivago." (No doubt to the same aromatic outcome, and yes, Mister Author, I did have a cat that did do that to cashmere, until we realized it liked the resonant sound of a foil pan taped to the back of its enclosed cat box.)This book is a fine gift for the cat lover who understands her or his role as a companion to the cat, and that the reverse might not be perceived to be true. We're at a moment in human history where so much of the nature from which we emerge seems all too tame. The cats whose discontent is documented here belie the narrative and open a squat foil-topped can of indifference on the architects of their environment. (That's us.) They do it with enough brio that we cheer them on despite the fact that it's clearly just a matter of time before they stop playing with us. Then, at 2 a.m., they will deliver the coup de grace, then drag the corpse of our hubris to the center of the floor...and wait for us to thank them.

The cats know what it’s like to rely on a system that embarrasses them and does not give them what they feel entitled to. Their reactions to the injustices they suffer (which seem remarkably similar to what many women experience) like lack of consent, being too much, being not enough are accurate fantasies that cats actually do.This is not a humor book for little kids. It’s more of a satire of what we sometimes wish we could do or say, or would be able to do is we gave no f***ks like cats do.Excellent and insightful commentary for today. It’s hard to stop reading aloud from it.

More greatness from Francesco Marciuliano. If you liked "I Could Pee On This and Other Poems by Cats," you're in for more wonderful insight into the minds of cats. Let's face it...if they banded together, cats would utterly take over the world; we're just lucky they are generally finicky and nap 22 hours a day. But this book covers their manifesto for why they should be in charge, and it's just such a fun read. I've always appreciated that Francesco isn't writing silly books to cash in on a trend; he's deeply a cat (and animal) lover, and his poems read as real insights from the minds of cats. They're funny, they're smart, and they wonder why you're not feeding them right now. Get this book if you have cats, and it's the perfect stocking stuffer for your cat-loving friends and family.

.....who you radicalized with your feminist, pro LGBTQ, social justice & social democratic agenda. After the initial romance with my ex I realized I’d fallen for a guy with ideas about social issues I didn’t vibe with. Plus he was a dog person, I had cats. Years and one child later we’re split, I have dogs bc our animal obsessed child is allergic to just about everything with fur (certain dogs like poodles and poodle mixes she can tolerate) and my ex has cats. Living with his cat loving girlfriend with a gay mom and a black trans step mom obviously made a difference in him. I also rec’d him books and debated him with my radical idea about social democracy, social justice, feminism and so on. Not long ago I realized my ex was a cat loving radical who sounded like he could be in Antifa. So this book was the perfect gift. Actually the perfect gift was the book: How to Talk to Your Cat About Gun Safety: And Abstinence, Drugs, Satanism, and Other Dangers That Threaten Their Nine Lives, unfortunately it wasn’t going to get here till after I needed it. So instead I bought this. I still think the other book is even better but unfortunately I couldn’t help myself and sent my ex a link to it. So now it’s kind of ruined for a future gift.

Francesco Marciuliano is always funny and this one is no exception. I check in often for a hearty laugh. My life is about cats, rescue volunteer, so it helps to lighten things up.

This was a gift for a friend. She loved it!

Hilarious.... No doubt this person knows Cats, and is very observant to the possibility of treason!! LOL

Enjoyed the twists and turns and truths of not only the cat but also of the humans who share their lives. Great photos included as well.

About the Author

Henrik Ibsen was born of well-to-do parents at Skien, a small Norwegian coastal town, on March 20, 1828. In 1836 his father went bankrupt, and the family was reduced to near poverty. At the age of fifteen, he was apprenticed to an apothecary in Grimstad. In 1850 Ibsen ventured to Christiania—present-day Oslo—as a student, with the hope of becoming a doctor. On the strength of his first two plays he was appointed “theater-poet” to the new Bergen National Theater, where he wrote five conventional romantic and historical dramas and absorbed the elements of his craft. In 1857 he was called to the directorship of the financially unsound Christiania Norwegian Theater, which failed in 1862. In 1864, exhausted and enraged by the frustration of his efforts toward a national drama and theater, he quit Norway for what became twenty-seven years of voluntary exile abroad. In Italy he wrote the volcanic Brand (1866), which made his reputation and secured him a poet’s stipend from the government. Its companion piece, the phantasmagoric Peer Gynt, followed in 1867, then the immense double play, Emperor and Galilean (1873), expressing his philosophy of civilization. Meanwhile, having moved to Germany, Ibsen had been searching for a new style. With The Pillars of Society he found it; this became the first of twelve plays, appearing at two-year intervals, that confirmed his international standing as the foremost dramatist of his age. In 1900 Ibsen suffered the first of several strokes that incapacitated him. He died in Oslo on May 23, 1906.

I intend only to review one play of these four, An Enemy of the People. As for the Signet editions and their translations, well, in terms of paper and print, you get what you pay for. You can carry them in your jeans pocket, but don't wait too long to read them, lest the paper yellows and crumbles in your fingers. An Enemy of the People is Ibsen's most explicitly political play, and the one that critics refer to most often when attempting to pin down the playwright's political stance. The fourth act of the drama consists chiefly of Doctor Stockman's spontaneous ranting and raving against the tyranny of the majority - the democratic mass of ignorant and short-sighted ordinary people who have failed to accept his advice. "The majority is never right!" he declares; "That's one of those social lies that any free man who thinks for himself has to rebel against.... all over this whole wide earth, the stupid are in a fearsomely overpowering majority..... The right is with me, and the other few, the solitary individuals. The minority is always right." Later in his tirade, he continues: "I'm thinking of the few, the individuals among us, who've mastered all the new truths that have been germinating. Those men are out there holding their positions like outposts, so far in the vanguard that the solid majority hasn't even begun to catch up..." Such anti-democratic, anti-liberal declarations have earned Ibsen a reputation among some critics of being a prophet of fascism -- he was in fact Hitler's favorite playwright -- but a careful comparison will show that Doctor Stockman sounds a good deal more like a character in an Ayn Rand novel than like the 'hero' of Mein Kampf. Listen to Stockman's last words, at the end of act five, standing in the middle of his vandalized clinic and confronting a ruined career: "I've made a great discovery!... the strongest man in the world is the one who stands most alone!"Recent audiences seem disposed to take Stockman at his own estimation. The BBC adaptation of Enemy transposes the danger to the community that Stockman has discovered from sewage contamination of the Spa to chemical pollution, and portrays Stockman as a staunch monitor against environmental catastrophe. It would, I think, be quite easy to rewrite Ibsen's play as an outcry of alarm against the deniers of global warming. But frankly, I don't think Ibsen had anything so obvious and unambiguous in mind. Perhaps I'm just reluctant to accept the idea that a great playwright could be a total fool. The play is clearly not about pollution, but about the 'balance' of values between the exceptional individual and the ordinary throng.Doctor Stockman, by his own evaluation, is the exceptional individual, and for the moment at least the embodiment of the "prophet without honor in his own country." However, the play is rife with clues that we the audience are not required to accept Stockman's self-assessment. First, of course, any rash madman can proclaim himself a genius, and Stockman is plainly a bit of a madman. He has, after all, put himself and his family in dire straits. He's also, by his own admission, remarkably naive for an "exceptional" mind -- utterly blind to the possibility that others might have other understandings than his. He loudly declares his indifference to public opinion of his personal worth, yet in fact he is painfully susceptible to the doubts of others about his motives and hysterically committed to vindicating his "honor'. In the end, he'd rather 'be right' - in his own mind - than 'do right'. His bizarre father-in-law, in fact, provides him with the chance to do something concrete - not without struggle and cost, but effectively for the best interest of the community - to take on the pragmatic task of cleansing the Spa of disease organisms. The mere possibility that the community might suspect him of self-interest, however, throws him into a tizzy of abnegation and isolation, and the scary scheme of 'educating' his sons and a few other children essentially as disciples of his proto-Objectivist philosophy. Stockman may be totally right about the hazard of pollution and yet be recognized as a quixotic megalomaniacal crank, a man of no possible use to his community. What then did Ibsen intend? After all, in Peer Gynt he'd already expressed his horror of everything mediocre; Doctor Stockman would have no reason to fear the "button-maker" who comes to recycle the 'souls' of ordinary men. But "An Enemy of the People" is too rich in irony and tragicomedy to be another affirmation of libertarian individualism. It can only be coherently read as proof of the futility of the 'superior' outsider. It's just a quick half-turn from Doctor Stockman to Ralph Nader... or to my own Harvard classmate Ted Kaczynski.

Four Major Plays, Volume I (Signet Classics)An Enemy of the PeopleDr Stockman: "The whole Bath establishment is a whited, poisoned sepulcher. I tell you - the gravest possible danger to public health! All the nastiness up at Mollidol, all that stinking filth, is infecting the water in the conduit pipes leading to the Reservoir.(Pointing to letter) Here it is! It proves the presence of decaying organic matter in the water; it is full of infusoria. The water is absolutely dangerous to use... either internally or externally." (An Enemy of the People, Act I)Henrik Ibsen's "An Enemy of the People" tells the story of a conscientious man of science, Dr. Stockman, who, as the public health official for his town, feels duty bound to report scientific evidence of disease; and the burgomasters and civic leaders who see his warnings about pollution of the new public baths as a negative factor in the city's progress. The play can be read as a corollary on global warning, dependence on oil, or conspicuous consumption and Wall Street Greed. Or, as Arthur Miller interpreted it in his 1950's adaptation of Ibsen's play, a commentary on the folly of popular opinion: expressly, the public hysteria over McCarthyism.HOVSTAD: The man who would ruin a whole community must be an enemy of society!DR. STOCKMANN: It doesn't matter if a lying community is ruined!... You'll poison the whole country in time; you will bring it to such a pass that the whole country will deserve to perish. And should it come to this, I say, from the bottom of my heart: Perish the country! Perish all its people!Ibsen is a tragedian in the tradition of the Greeks, Marlowe and Shakespeare. His language may be a bit stilted for today's tastes, but his message is still relevant.

As with all theatrical plays, they are not meant to just be read, but preformed. Enemy Of the People" is a timeless story of mistrust of the ity fathers on plans that are not as proposed. Now one whistle blower ruins everyones greedy desires and is forced out of town. Ibsen is great at delving deeply into the characters he writes.Reading Ibsen is worthwhile, watching a performance if his works is even more rewarding

an okay version of the plays of this truly great writer

This book is so poorly written that I had a hard time taking it seriously. I am mystified by all the positive reviews. Most chapters read as if the author scribbled them down in the span of a few hours. Despite being a journalist, Ian Halperin seems to have no concept of letting stories speak for themselves. He can't describe anyone without tacking on a string of generic adjectives. He uses clichés with abandon and repeats himself to no end.Halperin's reasons for writing this book are confusing. In the preface, he writes, "I wanted to expose this industry that thrives heartlessly on beauty as deception." Although this sentence makes little sense, it is clear that the author is horrified by the abuses and corruption in the industry (This is the major theme of the book). Yet he continues, "Through the information I present, I hope to build self-confidence, fuel modeling ambitions..." Fuel modeling ambitions? The book is devoted to describing how most aspiring models end up emotionally destroyed, in rehab or dead. I read the book in full, but Halperin does not present any coherent strategies to help future models avoid the pitfalls.Awkward and ungrammatical (and sometimes questionable) statements further erode this book's credibility. One chapter opens with this sentence: "The supermodels of the nineties became a generation's most sought after figure." The unsophisticated language doesn't help, either. Halperin writes that one model has "big b***s".Finally, Halperin closes with a chapter on the murder of Gianni Versace that has nothing to do with the rest of the book. If you can ignore the sloppy and repetitive writing, perhaps this is a somewhat illuminating exposé.

Like most books by Ian Halperin it is half about the subject half about himself.

Book is in new condition. Interesting read.

I admit it...I'm hooked on books about models and so I couldn't wait to get my hands on this one. It was worth the wait, revealing the often sordid details of the modeling industry (not that anyone expected it to be a story of purity and idealism, right?). So read this one. But don't stop there. Pick up A Thing of Beauty, which details the rise and fall of Gia Carangi. Then spend some time with Jerry Hall's True Tales (an inside look by Mick Jagger's ex).And finally, round off your reading with No Lifeguard on Duty, written by Janice Dickinson. arguably the world's "first" supermodel and Sylvester Stallone's erstwhile lover.

I liked the book, but I think it's a little exaggerated. I think the book talks mostly about the disreputable agencies, and models who are naïve and have no common sense. Read the book "The Modeling Life" and the author describes how the models have to be represented by a reputable modeling agency and stay away from the drugs and sex. But I think the book is a little exaggerated.

The author is all over the place with this book and is extremely obsessed with sex as every chapter seems peppered with junk about models being coerced. Not to minimize the accounts, but the book is filled with a bunch of stories of 'never were's' who never made it to the status of Carolyn Murphy or Cindy Crawford whining about how they were taken advantage of and didn't go anywhere with their careers. Ian seems like a pervert in many respects and if he is going 'undercover' to parties where models are being exploited, then he is part of the problem and not the solution. This book is even more slimy than Michael Gross' book. Ian also seems to believe he was a 'model' himself, and looking at his one picture in the book compared to other online pictures of him, it is no wonder he never got anywhere. Piece of crap, glad I didn't pay much for it. Don't waste your time or money.

I really enjoyed this book and it motivated me to write a short story using model as characters. It is a good book

Before reading this book I did not know that writing this bad ever got published. Janice Dickinson has a better writing style (or editor) than this "author". How anyone can give this book a higher than one-star rating is a mystery to me. Unforgivably bad.

Part of reviewing on Amazon is trying to counter Amazon's mis-posting of ratings of one edition of the same title with other editions of that title. Many times I have tried to use amazon stars differently with different editions, and tried several times to correct the number of stars here, but amazon still cannot handle that and gives the wrong number of stars to the wrong editions often. So let's try to counter this right off the bat and move my ratings to the top of the page:The ratings:Le Petit Prince: 5 starsEnglish translations to date:Wakeman/Foreman: 4.5 starsWoods: 4.25 starsHoward: 1 starSchwarz: 1 starTestot-Ferry: 1 starIn 2000, the Richard Howard translation of The Little Prince was released to supercede the original of Katherine Woods from 1943. When a publisher comes to one to translate such a classic how does one ever turn them down and say the last translation was good enough! I guess one doesn't. Money and ego prevail. But `good enough' is the debating point. Is it good enough? Howard writes in his preface "...it must be acknowledged that all translations date." Do they? Would one clean up and modernise the language of A.A. Milne in Winnie-the-Pooh? or of Kenneth Grahame in the Wind In The Willows? Of course not. Then Howard modernises Katherine Woods' rendition, "cry" with his "weep" during the departure from the fox. And he thinks this is more `modern?' What self-contradictory nonsense translators can write to justify themselves and their publishers.I grew up on Katherine Woods' translation and prefer it over the Howard, but I must admit, when I look at my French copy, the Woods too has some elisions in translation. During the farewell from the fox, she translates: "It is the time you have wasted for your rose that makes your rose so important." Howard translates: "It's the time you spent on your rose that makes your rose so important." The French actually states: "C'est le temps que tu as perdu pour ta rose qui fait ta rose si importante." Literally this translates far more meaningfully and philosophically than either of the Woods or the Howard as "It is the time which you have lost for your rose which makes your rose so important." So that leaves me thinking both translations have their flaws. I am not sure why both of them would dilute the original like they have, for it has surely been diluted from what St. Exupery wrote and intended, but the Woods translation is very close to St. Exupery's text and meaning and brings a layer to think about beyond merely "spent" time. From 2011 another translation is on the scene, by Ros and Chloe Schwarz, and it needs comment too. First of all, the illustrations: it is anything but sensitively rendered as its publicity blurb asserts. The colors have been filled in like old cellular film animation, and are just flat, losing St. Exupery's delicate drawing and watercolour washes. The hunter, as another example, has had circles drawn completely around his eyes now making him look like a goth caricature. The drawing of the fox in his lair has completely lost all the grass that was so delicately drawn by St. Exupery. The beautiful sense of all his drawings, that they flowed, without borders, right off the page, conveying their own meaningful addition to this borderless story, has been lost on many many of the drawings by the illustrator putting boxes around drawings that don't originally have any. The boa constrictor for instance. The sheep, for instance. Here the baobab trees and the weeding of Asteroid B-612 are now set against the dark background of space, not the daylight of the originals. The tiger no longer looks fearsome; it looks like a cute questioning pussycat, its line-work tampered with as it has been on most of the drawings. This illustration tampering is unforgiveable and reason alone not to buy this book. The Schwarz translation has a third perspective on the French, but still, for example, loses the quote mentioned above from the fox. "Perdu pour" is translated here as "spent on" again. St. Exupery chose "perdu pour" for a reason; he did not write "passé," or any other verb. "Perdu pour" brings many other things, more layers of meaning, to mind. Then these translators do other things. They do things so blatantly wrong like alter his word "mouton" into "little lamb." If St. Exupery had meant little lamb he would have written "petit agneau" but he didn't. The little prince is not so dumb to not know little lambs grow up into bigger sheep. Also, in the geographer chapter, St. Exupery explains "ephemeral" as "menace de disparition prochaine," "a menace which disappears soon." The Schwarzs translate that phrase as "likely to die very soon." Clearly they completely don't get St. Exupery's thought and subtlety and at the same time possess the unbelievable arrogance to write words that St. Exupery did not. They clearly don't have the soul of poets or philosophers ideally necessary, nor even the workman-like craft to simply translate what is there. Their approach to translation, like Howard's is unforgivable, and is another reason this book too should absolutely just sit on the rubbish heap until someone re-does it properly. The book itself is charming: tiny, hardcover, with gilt page edges and a ribbon marker. Full marks for being sturdy and beautifully portable, but otherwise... do yourself a favour and stay away from it too.I recently found another translation of which I was unaware, from Alan Wakeman, 1995 (hardcover), illustrated from St. Exupery by Michael Foreman. Michael Foreman is one of my favourite illustrators and I have many of his books. Works in beautiful watercolours. I wondered. When it arrived I knew I was in for something special. Wakeman (he says in the preface), started translating in 1979, not under contract, but simply because he was not satisfied with the Katherine Woods' translation. He worked in his favourite retreat by the sea, overlooking the Golfe de Giens, which turned out, from the beginning discovery in 1993 of St. Exupery's sunken plane, to overlook the crash site in the sea where St. Exupery was lost. It took another decade or so to absolutely confirm that this is where St. Exupery went down, but Wakeman was apparently eerily in touch with something from St. Exupery through their labours of love.Wakeman's translation is pretty accurate. He still translates "perdu pour" as "spent on," but okay. He translates "ephemere" as "doomed to disappear soon." Nice, and with a layer of fate the Schwarz's miss, but which Woods captures, albeit a bit more clumsily with "in danger of speedy disappearance." Wakeman has his quirks though. He translates "blé", the colour of the little prince's hair, as "corn." Technically correct, but an odd choice usually considered much more a secondary meaning to the more common one of "wheat." While a kernel of corn may be the colour of the little prince's hair, the kernels are not seen under the corn husks in a field of corn. The tassels, while colour correct, are overwhelmed in a corn field, especially from a fox's point of view, by all the green and are not really seen either. Wakeman seems to have never spent any time by a corn field to know that, unlike the fox who lives there, so Wakeman does not get that his quirky translation allusion is a stretch in reminding one of the little prince's hair colour. I find it rather a clash, or at the very least a break in the lovely flow St. Exupery spent so much time and talent composing, and work editing to create in his original work.Foreman's illustrations are what is special about this Wakeman translation. All of the St. Exupery ones used, which is most of them, have been taken and re-worked. The line work and watercolour is far more skilful than St. Exupery, but extraordinarily faithful, and retains that childlike naiveté. It really takes a second look to realize it is not actually St. Exupery's line work with better color. All drawings have been given color, which brings a satisfaction absent from some, even in the original publication, where for example, I have been sorely tempted to pull out my own paint box for the little prince watching the sunset. This drawing is clearly a watercolour originally, but has only ever been published in black and white. (Why?) Here all the drawings are now shown in colour. But where Foreman has really excelled is in introducing 8 beautiful full page or double page paintings of the little prince and the pilot: comforting the little prince when he was sad, walking with the little prince in his arms when exhausted to find water, sharing his drawings with the little prince, running with his revolver to kill the snake if he could... whole new enhancements to the story, bringing more forward the relationship that it was, not just story-telling about the little prince. For it is not just the story of a special individual, but also one of a special relationship, and the special place in our lives of special relationships and what makes them special. The Woods translation is still head and shoulders above the new ones, except for the Wakeman. Both are far more evocative of what was intended. The Foreman illustrations with the Wakeman translation I think makes it even better. The Woods translation hardcover is now a collectors item and can often be very expensive and harder to find in the U.S. Easier in Britain (and isn't that a whole other very interesting essay on the lovely differences it indicates). The Woods edition appears to be available economically as a paperback (white cover, usually pre-2000 publishing date), but with no color illustrations. The Howard translation, both hardcover and softcover (blue cover), both with color illustrations (and some black and white), is easily available at a quite reasonable price. The Schwarz translation is available in England and Canada easily, but hard to locate and has very poor notes on amazon.com. The Wakeman/Foreman collaboration (hardcover) can still be found used, in good shape, economical, for now, but also as a very expensive collectors item. (There are, I think, copyright issues until 2044; another interesting essay). I cannot vouch for the paperback version, publications of which often get cheap and sometimes are done with black and white illustrations only, like the Katherine Woods paperback and the Testot-Ferry translation (see below and see my review of Michael Foreman's Arthur High King Of Britain for more.).My recommendation is buy the best available, the Wakeman/Foreman hardcover edition, or the Woods hardcover, (or both; each have their merits and shortcomings), and if your French is alright, get a French version too. It is worth working through Le Petit Prince. You will learn more about life and language and different cultures in doing so than in many larger weightier, more adult tomes and our children will too from this timeless story with so many layers and such depth in its simplicity. The ratings:Le Petit Prince: 5 starsEnglish translations to date:Wakeman/Foreman: 4.5 starsWoods: 4.25 starsHoward: 1 starSchwarz: 1 starTestot-Ferry: 1 starP.S.I have also discovered there is enough of the Irene Testot-Ferry translation (Wordsworth) on the amazon "read inside" feature to render an opinion on it too. Cumbersome. Archaic, and not in a good way like the Katherine Woods. The Testot-Ferry is awkward, incorrect: e.g. "un peu," "a little," is translated as "more or less." "I flew more or less all over the world." Seems to lack the modesty intended by St. Exupery and the pilot here in the story which "a little" conveys. So she doesn't really get it. (And by the way, Wakeman leaves out "a little" completely. Rather a short-coming).The Testot-Ferry translation is awkward. She opens a paragraph with: "As a result of which I have been in touch, throughout my life, with all kinds of serious people." for "J'ai ainsi eu, au cours de ma vie, des tas de contacts avec des tas de gens serieux." which more correctly and simply translates as "I have had, through the course of my life, lots of contact, with lots of serious people." Also, all the drawings in this edition are the most abysmal black and white hack reproductions. So avoid this translation despite its bargain basement price. You get what you pay for. There are better (more accurate) translations and more richness and layers of meaning in the Wakeman and the Woods translations, which are missing and awkward in the Testot-Ferry, and which such a classic piece of literature deserves.P.P.S.A recent comment elsewhere prompted this post script:If you have a Cuffe translation of The Little Prince it too is very rare and likely will never be re-printed. The Wakeman edition is becoming such too, sadly. The reason for this is that the Little Prince fell out of copyright in England after fifty years, so Penguin and Pavillion, actually anticipating this, did the Cuffe version and the Wakeman version respectively. What they didn’t anticipate was that later in 1995 the UK harmonized its copyright law with the EU where copyright is 70 years and St. Exupery is allowed an additional 30 years due to his premature death in exceptional service to his nation, and The Little Prince, like a handful of other titles, fell back into copyright there. Hence The Little Prince will not now fall out of copyright in Europe or England until 2045. This means, alas, likely no Folio Society edition or any other UK or European one for quite some time. In the U.S. of course, they ignore all this, and do their own thing, hence the Howard translation in 2000. Additionally, as I understand it, there are some differences among the family. St. Exupery’s birth family appears to have approved of the Wakeman translation, but St. Exupery’s wife Consuelo (and now her family), I believe, own the copyright, and my guess is, have a pretty strict and exclusive agreement with Harcourt Brace in North America. Why would HB not, for this incredible money-maker that most publishers would love a piece of. Which means yes, the Katherine Woods version is still available in England where it is beyond HB’s taste and control, thankfully.

Amazon will not let me return this book and it is defective. Multiple pages are like the photo I have included. I’m very disappointed because I love the print version of The Little Prince

The review is only for the quality of book ''The Little Prince: The Childrens Classic Novella (Voted Best Book of the 20th Century in France) by CreateSpace publishing. I was attracted towards this version because it said it's Katherine Wood's translation which is better than Howard's translation (Blue Cover). Also, the cover looked exactly same as the one I loved as a child. So I bought this to gift a friend and when it arrived it was nothing like I expected. It said non-illustrated in the description, but I was not expecting it missing even the illustrations mentioned in the text. It's not like a proper book at all, it's just like the text of Little Prince type-setted and printed on some home printer. It looks more like home printed and less like a book. I have not confirmed if it actually is Wood's translation if it is, it does have some value for those who are looking specifically for this translation, kind of like a manuscript. If it's not Wood's translation, it's a scam. This version is useless for first-time readers and for gifting.

Attached to this review will be a silent flip-through of the entire coloring book so you can make an informed decision as to whether or not it will work for you. This is a wonderful coloring book for fans of “The Little Prince”. The artwork is derived from the original artwork in the book but has been put together in a way to make it more fun to color. Additionally, there are also excerpts on each page from the English translation of the story. It gives you a feel for what the book is about but it is not a re-telling of the whole story. The line work on the designs is very delicate. Some designs are open and easy to color while others have many intricate and small details. I went back and re-acquainted myself with the with the original story (though the English translation!) What I didn't realize as a child was how adult the many themes of this book were. What I remember from reading it as a child was thinking both how wonderful and how sad it would be to be the little prince. The designs are printed on both sides of non-perforated paper. Most of the designs spread across two pages. Most of the pages in my book did not line up well, so the two-page spreads were off. Most designs merge into the binding and and part of the design appear lost in it. The binding is sewn although the cover and the very edge of the bound book seem to be glued together. I think it is a matter of cutting threads to remove pages – though it appears that if you cut threads, the entire book will come apart as it is sewn from front to back with multiple threads. I could get the book to lay fairly flat by “breaking” the spine with a hard crease. That exposed the parts of the design that were missing at the bound edge but it will make it easier to color into the inside portions. All markers and gel pens either bleed through or leave a noticeable color shadow on the reverse side of the page. My coloring pencils (soft core and hard) worked well on the paper. For me, the book will have to be for coloring pencils only. Taking the book apart is problematic as I'll never get the images to line up and it appears that small amounts of the design are missing from where the two-page spread designs come together. While I love the illustrations, the publishing issues (two-pages spreads, missing design work, mis-aligned pages, etc.) as well as the inability to use anything other than coloring pencils cause me to detract a star from my rating. If I were reviewing only the artwork, this book would be fantastic; however, it is a book I intend to color in and the other issues present problems that may well keep others from contemplating buying this coloring book.

Detailed book. Learned a lot here. Not confusing either. No problem with sender.

I run a foul ball tracking and fan website and app and also have inventions for use in sports stadiums. This book's given me all sorts of inside knowledge about the laws that I need to know. I recommend it for all interested in sports, even if you're not an attorney.

Great condition

I regret that this book is poorly written; I didn't take Sports Law in law school and was hoping to get a basic grasp on the subject. Unfortunately, a lot of the book is worded poorly and isn't very clear--I find myself using Google to clarify very basic concepts that this book leaves as ambiguous.

Gives a great overall view of this modern type career for both men and women. Provides the nuts and bolts of the career.

Unless you plan to practice in this field, this book will not interest you.But if you do wish to be a sports agent, then this is a great book to learn about all the ins and outs of the process.

"Using the ON COURSE curriculum has impacted retention in a positive direction at our school. The textbook is engaging and diversified, and the format appeals to students at all levels of collegiate study. The topics are relevant to "real life," and students readily see the value of applying ON COURSE principles in their lives--from a personal, academic, and/or career-related perspective. ON COURSE provides valuable tools for pursuing success, and the textbook is replete with visuals, cartoons, quotes, tips, and testimonies that the students love.""ON COURSE is life-changing for my students. I have seen students evolve in ways they never imagined in a matter of a semester thanks to ON COURSE. I cannot imagine using another book. No other book encompasses the reflective, introspective, and success attributes that ON COURSE does. ON COURSE walks students through their journey of self-discovery and allows them to grow into the student they have always wanted to become."

I don't care for it - honestly it was needed for my college class. It isn't all that bad but still...blah...

Bought this book because it is a textbook I needed, and the book did not come with the cd or the access code which has been extremely frustrating. To purchase a separate access code now costs half of what the textbook costs.

This book is designed for college students to learn self-motivation and time management, but it can apply to anyone trying to achieve a goal. It is the best book of its type I have found. The Study Skills (blue pages) sections are absolutely wonderful. I saw it in a tutoring center at a local college and immediately bought one for my grandson. It includes positive motivation quotes, student stories, and workable approaches to identifying challenges, choosing options, and progressing toward solutions.

Great resource for any student, middle school and beyond, who wants direction and improved study skills, or needs help with goal setting, time management, realizing the benefits of self-evaluation in general. I bought this to use with teens, but I personally have gained a lot by reading and applying some of the ideas and strategies laid out in the book. Highly recommended for anyone thinking about going to college or technical school, or trying to help their high schooler finish and earn their diploma.

I needed this book for a class. There's nothing special about the text, except it challenged some my "Victim" complex at the time..

This book was required for a college psychology course and it was very eye opening. I loved thinking from a different perspective and appreciated the stories within the book. It was very educational and I highly recommend everyone to read this book.

Overall, I feel that this book is filled with a lot of detailed information intended to help the beginning college student, and perhaps others, stay “on course”. There is also an overall structure in various ways and from a variety of perspectives to help people direct their lives. The intent is to help the student see alternatives, including alternative points of view, that would be helpful for her or him. I think that Prof. Downing has done an excellent job and that students who take the time to engage with this material will benefit. We all sometimes face difficult transitions, and the transition to adulthood, much of which is captured in the rituals and culture of higher education, is one of the most difficult transitions we humans face. I read this book for some insights to help students I encounter, but I also thought that, I myself, have benefitted a little from reading the book. I think Prof. Downing provides a great deal of help to pass classes, and to graduate, and to organize one’s thinking toward adult life, adult responsibilities and adult motivations. There is a complete focus on finding a mentality for growth and creativity, and for balance in one’s life. Most of life we cannot control, and our actions are in a context of risk, ambiguity and uncertainty. But we do have control over many aspects of our inner lives, our reactions, and our recognition of the potential consequences of our own actions. Prof. Downing is very concerned with this, and with getting us to see that there are often positive, personal choices that we can make to avoid feeling like a victim of circumstances. I strongly recommend this book to awaken oneself to a growth mindset, that amounts to much more than just getting good grades or graduating (although there is ample material in the book that addresses this). I think we can all feel lost in our lives, even when we have achieved a fair measure of success, so a book to stay “on course” can be helpful to a larger audience than just students.

I had no motivation so I bought this book. I didn't get anything done or care about finishing college. This book is structured to nurture and challenge every aspects of your life. (Inner Defender)It tackles procrastination and what kinds there are. (Importance vs Urgency)Although it may seem like a book of common sense, it is useful to have a chart provided for you to follow and diagrams to illustrate how to organize your life.I still don't have motivation but this book helped me organize my life in at least finishing things. I will be graduating this year!

I have been teaching from On Course for over a decade. It talks of self-responsibility and is super practical with a lot of activities. Highly recommend for a college success course.
