I love cookbooks and the authors Modern Jewish cooking cookbook is a favorite of mine - her recipes always come out great! I decided to try this one and add it to my collection. It’s very small but filled with great recipes. There are even a good number of vegetarian main dishes.

Easy to follow the recipes and some delicious results.

It is a rare thing for me to find a cookbook where I want to try virtually every recipe in the book and I'm making good inroads on cooking my way through it. The Little Book of Jewish Feasts is exactly such a book! Containing just 25 recipes, this little volume is worth its weight in gold!Traditional Jewish recipes, even if you aren't Jewish, are ideal for the sort of mixed diet family we see so often today. Because Jews are prohibited from consuming milk and meat in the same dish (most Orthodox won't even eat these on the same day) you'll find a nice selection of vegetarian recipe as well as some very special meat dishes. Let me tell you about three of my favorites:▶︎ Kousa b'Jibn (Crustless Zucchini Quiche) - 5 stars!Easy to make and lovely both warm and at room temperature, this rich egg/cheese/zucchini dish is downright yummy. This will take about 30 minutes prep time (mostly sautéing zucchini to remove all the excess water) and another 35 minutes or so in the oven but it is an ideal makeahead, perfect for brunch, a picnic or cut into small portions, even suitable as a nibble at your next party. Bonus points: A great way to use up some of that excess zucchini from your garden!▶︎ T'fina Pakaila (White Bean and Meatball Stew) - 10 stars out of 5!These are the BEST meatballs I've ever tried, and I make some pretty mean meatballs. The recipe does call for a pound of beef flanken or short ribs in addition to the ground beef used for the meatballs, but frankly next time I make this I may very well double the meatballs and leave out the short ribs. White beans & spinach (you could also use chard) make this a full meal in a pot. Just add some bread. Inexpensive and quick, this dish will easily serve 6 hungry people in just under an hour.▶︎ Pollo Fritto per Hanukkah (Fried Chicken for Hanukkah) - 4 StarsI'm the daughter of a Southern girl known far and wide for her fried chicken, so I am very particular about my friend chicken. My Mama made her's North Carolina style - skinless, shallow fried without the heavy egg breading. This fried chicken retains the skin and features a luscious egg breading that crisps up to the nines in the deep fryer. Two notes: You will not be able to fit all of the chicken into the pan at once but will need to cook it in 2 or 3 batches. Keep the cooked chicken warm in a 250F oven on a rack placed over a baking tray. (Don't just line the tray with paper towels - the coating will go soggy.)▶︎ Grandma's $0.02 - A great addition to your library that won't take up a ton of room on your cookbook shelf, the Little Book of Jewish Feasts will get a lot of use. I can't wait to see the other books in the series!Highly recommended

The recipes are divided into two sections: vegetarian/fish, and chicken/beef/lamb -- 25 in all.The recipes are "meticulously curated," promises the description on the verso page -- because Leah Koenig is an investigative cook, tracking down not only the recipes but the culture/history behind them.The photographs, by Linda Pugliese, talented food and travel photographer, place the food against slate backgrounds. They make you want to put on a apron and immediately recreate those dishes. The colours are much brighter on her website on my computer screen, so you might want to view them online as well.What a great shower gift!

Though we've only tried a couple so far, they were delicious!The book is chock full of photos guaranteed to whet your appetite.But for me, the best part of the book was that each recipe includes cultural notes. The recipes are global and feature Jewish cuisine from all over the world. Whether your background is Moroccan, Greek, Italian, Sephardic, or just plain old American, there are recipes which encompass your favorite ingredients, spices, and traditions.This little book is a treasure!*ARC Provided via Net Galley

During the 80s and 90s, Nature was declared at its death, end, or just troubled by various academics writing from privileged positions. Subsequently, the mashing of nature and culture, or the deconstructions of its alleged dualism, or the monadic collapsing of them turned out to be a growth industry, particularly in the humanities but also elsewhere in academia. As an aside, I wonder how many 'ordinary' everyday people think Nature is dead.......troubled, yes, certainly! Ended? Hmmm! Debaise sees otherwise, particular through his account of bifurcation that interrogates the operative basis and function of dualist and monist conceptions of nature.Why then a 'turn' in 'new' theory to 'non' anthropocentrism, 'non/more-than human' and renewed speculations about ontology, realism, and materialism? What the hell is going on in postmodern 'intellectual' work and associated 'movements' in and of (western) thought?Debaise's very readable, short book is well worth reading as a 'thought' responsive to some of these academic and existential dilemmas, (and others such as the uncritical acceptance in the mainly North American academy of the increasingly populist 'posthuman'), as is his related speculative empiricism (2017). The Debaise text is relatively easy reading and interprets Whitehead in an accessible and interesting manner. His views on nature, as event and plural, warrant attention and debate, as does his account of the subjectivity of feelings as a quality of the intensification of experience...hence his somewhat pragmatic speculative empiricism.More might have been made of Dewey but, with a careful interpretation and helpful pedagogy of the real, the ordinary everyday person on the street would also find "Nature as event' as an al(luring) possibility.

Generation of an ADF library JAR is sufficiently explained and that process is similar to generation of an EAR file.Although the discussions seem to focus on ADF Release 12c, most of the material is equally applicable to 11g. The author correctly assumes that most modern application developers can find menu items and development operations in Eclipse or JDeveloper without a step-by-step list of what to click. This is one of the secrets to the book's ability to be "short and sweet."Speaking of short and sweet, this book shines in its brevity (less than 200 pages), which makes the Big Picture of how the pieces of ADF fit together easier to assimilate. Another shining feature is the author's approach to the topic; where other ADF books have taken the approach of explaining features and frameworks and possible options contained in those frameworks, this book is organized around logical parts of the application and tasks you would need to accomplish.For example, instead of describing the FacesContext class in detail, that subject is introduced in a section called "Interacting with the User" because programming user interaction into the application is a task, and by the way, you need to know about FacesContext to complete that task. So the author focuses on the task at hand and explains enough of the technology to accomplish the task, which also leads to an understanding of how that technology could solve other problems. Also, the book contains copious code examples, which can be used as patterns for your own code.In addition, and this is a feature I found unique to this book, the author boldly sprinkles best practices into the discussions with words like "You should always create your own ADF business component base classes..." It's not that this is the only book that contains best practices for ADF; it's more that this book bases its discussions around best practices. The book doesn't offer you all the possible options, it just gives you The Best Way. Without this kind of advice, you can quickly run into trouble or, even worse, experience trouble later in the development process.The best practices in this book do not just represent the opinions of a well-respected, very-knowledgeable expert; they also represent the opinions of the ADF developer community, who over the years has come up with what works and what doesn't. The refined gold that resulted from many years of discovering best practices is contained in this book. In a way, that previous books have not achieved this level of completeness about The Best Way is not all their fault -- they were written while the very best practices for ADF usage were still being discovered. Another way to say this is that the material in this book is the highest evolution of the best way the ADF community has found to understand and develop applications with ADF.
