In my quest to discover more cozy mystery series to love, the title on this one leaped to the eye and pulled me in for a closer inspection. Soul food and murder? I'll take a double helping of that, please.Murder with Collard Greens and Hot Sauce is the third book in the series, but I had no difficulty diving in with this book. I could tell that a handful of characters were recurring, but there didn't seem to be a connecting series storyline that needed me to start from the beginning.Mahalia and her lively cousin are getting their hair done at their usual stylist a few doors down from Halia's restaurant when they learn a local minor celebrity, a hair care gal, will be bringing her entourage to Latasha's salon because of how much Latasha has been able to sell of Monique's product. Halia and her mother make the refreshments for Monique's visit and this draws them in to the flashy and fabulous Monique's celebrity world just in time for a murder.One of the wonderful things about cozies are how much attention they give to setting elements and to the average daily life of the characters as opposed to launching straight at the mystery and revving up the suspense. In this case, we have the world of hair care products and styling for black women and Halia's own mouth-watering kitchen creations in her restaurant and her family life. While, as a white gal, I found the styling side interesting at first, there was a point where I was ready to tap out if there was one more mention of straightener or anti-frizz or conditioner. Like Halia, I like low maintenance dos and I don't get into creative styling so I lost interest in the world of hair care rather quickly. Thankfully, the foodie angle and the lively cast of characters kept me going. Did I mention they end up at a drag queen event at a gay bar?The murder takes a while to tease out between the long set up of the story introducing all the players and teasing out a bit about the regulars. I didn't mind this since this was my first encounter with the series. Plus, the added character development gave me a better idea of the suspects. I wasn't sure who did it and found the twist at the end to be a great surprise. This ended up being one of those stories that I was less into the book for the mystery as to enjoy the characters and their world. It wasn't riveting, but I did get 'cozy'.Incidentally, the author graciously includes the recipes for all that mouthwatering food and beverages that Halia and her mama serve up.So, if you are looking for a new cozy mystery series to try with a fun group of characters, some mouthwatering food, and a slowburn mystery, take a gander at this one.

SPOILER ALERT!Halia and her wacky cousin Wavonne are back! Halia, whose given name is Mahalia, owns Mahalia's Sweet Tea, an always busy and delicious soul food restaurant in Prince George County, Maryland--near Washington, D.C. This mystery focuses on Monique--a very successful owner of a hair product business and her entourage. Monique hosts a glamorous "all-white" dress party; Halia and Wavonne are invited and offer to bring some of the best of Sweet Tea's dishes. But after they leave the party, Monique is found dead and Halia, decides to investigate on her own--well, with Wavonne insisting on tagging along.I've read the prior two books in the series and enjoyed them but one could easily jump right into the book and understand the plot. There were a number of characters who became suspects immediately and some whose motives became apparent later in the book. I thought I had guessed the killer's identity a few times, only to be surprised by another plot twist. I really liked the diversity brought to the cozy genre; it was refreshing that the characters were African-American. My only criticism was the murder happened too late in the book for me.Thanks to NetGalley and Kensignton Books for a digital advance review copy of this book. My review is voluntary.

There were a lot of really good elements in this book. I loved the area that it takes place in (PG County, Maryland!), the dialogue, the restaurant, all the world building the author did.The actual murder doesn't take place until 40% into the book, so after it happens the resolve comes quick.The reveal was nicely done. I'd love to say that I suspected the culprit right away, but the truth is I suspected everyone. There were some very nice twists and turns as I tried to figure it out, but in the end I got to be as surprised as the supporting cast.The reason this book, despite lots of very good things, got a 3 Star review from me is a much more personal reason.I am a very shy and reserved person. I do my best to keep the people around me happy and to do my own thing.Every time Wavonne spoke I could feel my immortal soul leaving my body.She's brash, she's loud, she has no filter. Every sentence had me dying of embarrassment. She's out to have a good time and doesn't care who's watching! I'm sure she's the highlight of many people's read, but I personally am just too shy to survive...Over all, really good book! But if incredibly shy to the point of watching other people say embarrassing things will make you embarrassed, maybe give it a miss.

Everyone is excited to meet Monique Dupree and before they know it the ladies are being invited to the big Hair Expo.Inviting them all back to her restaurant for a good dinner, Mahalia is getting some negative vibes coming off a few of Monique’s friends and husband. She’s also getting some nice vibes from their personal chef.But when Monique is found shot to death in her own home, everyone is looking to Mahalia to look into things. And there was plenty to look into! Every last one of them is hiding some nasty secret and Monique it turns out was hiding some of her own. One that could rock her empire.This is one cozy series that I really like. Laplace transforms are not for everyone. They transform a complex mathematical expression into a manageable alternative form that can be integrated or differentiated. You need a lot of prerequisite mathematics to understand Laplace transforms -- algebra, analytic geometry, calculus and differential equations and an understanding of what you learned means in reality. Given that, it is very concise. Laplace transforms are a powerful means to a mathematical end. The author handled the topic well.

This is one of those self published little gems, but unlike so many others, has a LOT of value if you can organize it yourself. First, there is no index, so the 150 or so worked problems flow generally from the chapters, but for specifics you'll have to create your own index if you want to use it as a reference work. Second, the Chapter titles at the beginning are very general, and don't agree with the Intro (which says, for example, that 4 is about electrical current flow (meaning "topic" 4) in circuits, whereas CHAPTER 4 is actually about strings, dynamic systems, etc.The formulas and solutions are high quality, with few errors, and have plenty of diagrams. Despite the promotional reviews there are NOT really a lot of verbal descriptions, because the book moves at a very rapid place from example to example in order to pack at least one or two examples of each type of problem in 300 pages. The author does use the solution notation convention so later problems do refer back to previous exercises.In summary, these are the class notes of a very bright mathematician, and show the sub steps for each technique quite clearly, as long as you know the symbols and understand the operations, which are not explained in detail. Not a lot of space is spent on inverses, which are really the toughest part of transform operators, but the problems selected solve quite clearly without the need for highly complex inversion manipulations. Some of the applications covered include solutions of PDE's, electrical applications, structural and dynamic applications, and of course equations of motion, waves, vibrating strings, etc.For the price, a lot of good worked examples if you can get around the lack of indexing. Although there are also problems and solutions that are somewhat didactic, the book doesn't really follow a "course" format as much as topics and examples, more for the engineer who has forgotten a technique and wants to look up an example solution. From that point of view, very well done.If there is one "best practice" in this book that I wish other, more polished texts from Wiley and Springer would follow, it is the fact that the author, while assuming you know transforms, does NOT assume you know all the intermediate steps in each problem - solution, so there are far fewer "jumps" to figure out-- the jumps are given!! For learning, maybe you need the discipline of finding intermediate steps yourself, but for real life applications and problems, you'll thank the author for including them.

What a great subject for Roald Dahl.... A boy, his Grandmother and distinguishing real old women from real witches. This is a laugh out loud favorite.

good play, but a bit scary for young kids. It is a Roald Dahl story, what more can I say?

A little edgy. Really enjoyed the read. Theatre buffs will get a kick out it but maybe not necessarily the usual Dahl fan. But that's what I personally enjoyed- the writing showed Dahl's versalility. Nice!

Our grandkids and their parents were very happy reading these plays. They're truly actors and using voices was a lot of fun.

This second installment in the Love and Promises series can be read as a standalone but I also recommend the previous book, The Amish Teacher’s Gift, as well.Dr. Kyle Miller is surprised by an out of the blue phone call from a doctor who lives in his hometown of Lancaster, PA. He is also shocked by Dr. Hess’s proposal for Kyle to move back to Lancaster and take over his practice so he can retire. I became a little weepy as I read because it was so tender.I am also more interested in the holistic healing properties of organic herbal teas for chronic illness. I have found a new interest. Leah's story was very convincing in how well they can work.This is the second book in the Love and Promises series but each book can be read as a stand-alone. It is a beautiful Christian romance with no obscene sexual overtones or scenes, no foul language and not overly religious (meaning scripture verses on every page). I would feel comfortable giving this to a teen girl or my ninety-year-old grandmother to read.I received a copy of this book from Forever (Grand Central Publishing) through NetGalley.
