You are not going to read a better example of a cross-generational, city boy-country daddy, romance with deep religious overtones than this one. OK, so I exaggerate a bit.The cross-generational thing is more of an attitude that 41-David Fisher, a widowed Mennonite farmer, takes toward his new neighbor, 31-year-old Christie Landon who has spent his adult life as an openly gay New York City semi-hedonist. Even though David has a 20-year-old daughter and 18-year-old son, he is not a daddy to Christie--he's an exceptionally friendly, totally honest, and seriously hot man-next-door-who-gives-off-mixed vibes.David is two years widowed and 25-years religiously and sexually conflicted. His daughter is a pre-nursing student at Penn State who follows church teachings, and his son a divinity student at Franklin and Marshall, and his life has always been immersed in the strict Mennonite culture of Lancaster County, Pa.Christie is looking to change his hedonistic ways and takes the opportunity to delve into his late aunt's bequest of her home to try to get more of a perspective on life after a violent overreaction to alcohol and a little blue pill a trick slipped him in a Manhattan club, pills which almost killed his best friend. If you think never-the-twain should meet, or greet, you would be wrong However, the time it takes for both David and Christie to warm to each other, and become warm with each other, is beautifully plotted and written so that this totally unlikely coupling seems so natural that you wonder what will happen when the kids find out.And that's where the book goes from laconically loving to viciously vindictive in a wrap-up that will leave you breathless. This is one of author Easton's best works and deserves attention be paid immediately.

Okay, so here’s the thing: this book was a disappointing miss for me. I pre-ordered this as soon as I saw the blurb and was eagerly looking forward to it. I couldn’t remember the release date and checked half a dozen times before it finally appeared on my Kindle. I love May/December romances, I love food and cooking, and I love characters coming to terms with their sexuality. And A Second Harvest has ALL THREE, how could I not love it?While the writing itself was fine and I really did like both of the main characters, the novel as a whole fell flat. The story started off with a strong introduction to David, the quasi-Mennonite farmer in his early 40s, isolated and unhappy with his life on the farm. Our first scene with David is while he is waiting up with a favorite cow that is dying, and he is disconcerted that the death bothers him as much as it does (which, hey, makes sense for a dairy farmer). I immediately wanted to know more about David. He lived through the death of his wife of 20 years, both of his children have recently left home, he’s isolated and unsure of his choices over the last 40 years. This is basically a perfect set up for some serious introspection on grief and regret and fear of change, all kinds of amazing, rip your guts out, emotion. Unfortunately, the book never really gave us much more from him. Sure, David grew with his relationship with Christie, but we never really got any of that emotional processing, any of the FEELS. I wasn’t even as fascinated by life on a farm as I usually am.And Christie. Christie was one part of the book that I was leery of, because I’m not usually a big fan of the “party boy” persona. I’m not sure if I liked Christie more than I anticipated because nothing in the book actually made me believe he was a “fierce” New York club boy or if my fondness was for some other reason. He was graceful in crappy situations and when push came to shove he reacted in realistic ways. I was longing for more time with him in the kitchen, talking about the food, the taste, the smells, the experience of Christie cooking exotic meals for he and David to enjoy.I know Eli Easton can write great secondary characters. I’ve seen it in other novels. This book wouldn’t have made me believe it. Every secondary character is so so flat. From the meek and mild daughter and future-minister, bible-quoting homophobic son, to the Pastor that basically says only words he found on a “How to Save One of Your Flock From the Sin of Homosexuality” pamphlet, all of the secondary characters were static images instead of real characters. To sum up, I know this review is a bit harsh for a book I gave 3 stars. Really, what it comes down to is disappointment. This was a really great set up for a story, from an author that I know can write well, that fell far short of its potential. It was FINE. It was OKAY. It was readable and I wasn’t upset that I spent a few hours of my time reading it, but it won’t stick with me, and I’ll think hard about another pre-order from Eli Easton.

I've loved many of Eli Easton's novels (Superhero has been on my top 5 all-time list since I first read it- and have reread a dozen times). This book may be my new favorite from her.A Second Harvest is the story of David, a 41yo Mennonite farmer from Pennsylvania. Widowed two years earlier, and his two college age children off studying, David is just going through the the motions of living while taking care of his farm. Into his quiet life comes Christie, a hard partying 30yo New Yorker trying to decide what he wants from life after a life threatening scare. Christie has inherited the farm next door to David's and decides that getting away from it all and trying a quiet life in the farmlands of PA is just what he needs. What he didn't plan on was the hot, older farmer that lives next door. As the two men become friends over shared meals, farm work, and exercise, Christie begins to fall for his straight neighbor. But what Christie doesn't realize, is that David has been hiding feelings that just would not have been accepted by his family and church. As the two try to navigate their feelings for each other, they must also deal with the issues their relationship will cause for family and friends, and if the rewards of that relationship will outweigh the consequences.I knew this book was coming out months ago (I had heard from the author while she was still writing it) and have been waiting for it excitedly. I can't explain why this book hit me so hard. I read hundreds of books every year and many of them make an impact on me. But this book...Wow! I think I just found myself so connected to the character of David, maybe seeing something of myself in him. It's rare that I so connect with a character even in other books that I love.Loved the characters, loved the story, a couple of great sex scenes (the scene where Christie "shows" David how to sext-OMG), some angst, and HEA. My only complaint; I wanted the epilogue to be in Bora-Bora (read the book, that will make sense)

I think it's madness to pay full price for a new travel guide, but the used ones don't specify publication date. This one was published in 1996 and so, much of the information is useless. Also, in true Lonely Planet style, the typeface is so tiny, it requires a magnifying glass to see.Generally, the book was very dry and humorless and not very interesting or helpful. A lot of this might come from the fact that many of the Gulf States really are NOT tourist material, but unless you actually see a new book (in a real bookstore) first, I wouldn't order a used guide again, unless you can ascertain the publication date.

Looking forward to using it soon!

I used this book for my travel to Saudi Arabia following the footsteps of Nassir Khusraw, the Persian poet and philosopher who went to Mecca in 1045. According to this book the distance between Medina to Jeddah and Mecca is 390 and 410, respectively. Nassir Khusraw in his "Safarnameh" says the distance between Medina and Mecca is 100 Farsang (about 600 kilometer). I was wondering why he overstimates the distance. In my book, then I added a paragraph explaining the reasons and theorizing that he might have travelled a longer route, due to dangers on the road and search for water. He was always correct in his estimation of the distance between many cities he travelled. Then I found out about MSN Encarta World Atlas. I typed the name of these cities and found out the distance was 629 and 605 kilometer, respectively.Well done Nassir Khusraw a millenium ago! and Mr. Robison, correct this big mistake as soon as possible. The book has little practical use as far as Mecca and Medina is concerned

This is an essential reference for any tourist, traveller or expatriate relocating to the Arab Gulf states. The book's information and advice enable a new-comer to develop a sense for local atmospherics and sensitivities so one adapt, integrate and thrive in the host country culture and in the supportive expatriate communities.Good coverage of cultural, commercial and logistical (i.e., "Where can I find...?") details.Highly recommended. Written with imagination, humor, and attention to detail.FWIW, the earlier (1993) edition of this book I used when I was in the United Arab Emirates and Oman in 1995 was 100% accurate. The maps and guides to local services in the smaller cities were exceptionally helpful. An impressively well-researched and high-quality work, as is typical of Lonely Planet Press titles.

Having just returned from a 5 week trip through Oman, UAE, Qatar, and Bahrain I can say that Lonely Planet has again produced an accurate and useful guide. And despite the fact that it is several years old, prices and descriptions were still right. The guide's advice to try to get to the Musandem Peninsula in Oman was a fine piece of advice--it is amazingly beautiful. And to the person who gave one star to this guide because of it's reference to the "Arabian Gulf": relax. If you say "Persian Gulf" to anyone in the Arab Gulf states they will have no idea what body of water you are talking about. I suppose you would be equally upset if 25 years ago a guidebook to China refered to the capital as "Beijing" instead of the Western imposed name "Peking"?

First of all this Iranian guy is correct. The official name of this body of water is PERSIAN Gulf. The term Arabian Gulf was invented in 1970s by some Pan Arabists who failed to show up at their geography classes. The author's use of this term shows simply his arrogance and fact that he does not know the region nor its people. By using "Arabian Gulf" he simply wants to impress ignorant Arabs into buying his book.Other than that his book is useless as it does not touch on the cultural aspects on the region.

The book makes repeated references to the "Arabian Gulf" - but there is no such thing. There is an Arabian Sea, and a Gulf of Oman, and the PERSIAN Gulf, but no "Arabian Gulf" exists. The Persian Gulf is the official name of that body of water, and has been known by that name since ancient times. Even the ancient Greeks referred to it by its correct name. One has to wonder, if Lonely Planet is so willing to pander to the Arab governments of the PERSIAN gulf in this manner by renaming the PERSIAN Gulf, then how accurate can their travelogues really be?

#57,750 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I really wanted to love this cookbook, I really did. I agree with another review though, I wish I'd borrowed the book first. I'm having a terrible case of buyers remorse. The recipes are very hit or miss (sadly most have been misses here). I've tried 7 recipes in the past two weeks, today my family asked that I take a break from this cookbook for awhile. Only a couple recipes will be repeated; the vegan queso was a win and the enchiladas. The PB Pad Thai, the White Bean Posole Verde and the Garlic Pineapple Stir-Fried Quinoa all sounded and looked amazing in the book, but sadly were thrown away. I want to try more recipes, but I don't want to waste any more groceries. If would suggest borrowing the cookbook or testing some recipes from her blog before purchasing. I wish I had.

I've been reading Dana's blog for a year now, and I absolutely love how easy and simple her recipes are. This book does not disappoint! The pictures are amazing and it is filled with delicious-sounding recipes. It does contain a substantial number of drinks/smoothies (about 10% of the recipes), which I don't really care for- especially in the breakfast section. That being said, I'm sure others will enjoy them and the rest of the recipes more than make up for it. One other criticism is I have is that the picture of the food sometimes appears after the recipe and sometimes before, which can be off-putting if you're a*** about things like that. I will update this review with pictures as I cook recipes from the book. Also, if you order the book and send a copy of the receipt to this email address: bundle@minimalistbaker.comYou get an additional 5 recipes in your inbox.ETA: Made the Thai quinoa meatballs today. Yum!

I love this cookbook for so many reasons....1. The recipes are delicious. I've never tried a recipe from minimalist baker that wasn't good and the recipes in this cookbook are no exception!2. The meals are simple to make and the author Dana provides all the instruction you need to cook with confidence even if you are not very experienced in the kitchen.3. Most of the recipes are very nutritious but at the same time do not sacrifice flavor. The few recipes that are not "healthy" is just because they are treats meant to be enjoyed every once in a while. The jumbo chocolate chip cookies come to mind :D (and you would never guess they were vegan)4. Everything in this book is vegan and cruelty free! Every recipe is free of meat, dairy and eggs and most of the recipes are gluten free or can be extremely easily made gluten free. I think just about anyone could eat food out of this cookbook and be more than satisfied.5. The photography of the food is beautiful! It's so fun to just flip through it. Even if i'm not going to choose a recipe to make, it's still fun to just go through the book and look at the pictures and think "wow that looks great"All around this is a great cookbook and I am looking forward to the next one minimalist baker puts out!

I've been making recipes off of the MB blog for a few months, but held off on ordering this book since the price seemed a bit high. I finally caved since I have loved so many of the MB recipes I've made and wanted to support the blog -- and am glad I did!So far, I've made the Butternut Squash, Kale, and Quinoa Bake; the Masala Chickpea Curry; the Banana Chocolate Pecan Muffins; and a few small other things. Everything has been amazing! I'm including a photo of the Banana muffins; they were so good that my husband (who is not a huge muffin fan) asked to have them sent along with him for breakfast each day.As a chronically time-crunched person, I also appreciate that most of the recipes are simple and quick to make. A few take longer, but even though aren't too bad.I also love that this book has a lot of entrees and that almost every recipe has a gorgeous, full-color photo. Photos always inspire me to cook and try out new things, and this book doesn't disappoint in that area. It's also a lovely hardback book.I've already made quite a bit from this, and know that I will continue to get good use out of it in the years to come. That being said, I'm already anxious for a second volume. :-)UPDATE ON 11-12-18: I've been using this cookbook a lot, and it has quickly become a favorite! I'm posting a photo o the Thai meatballs, which I've made a few times and which always come out amazing!

Let me start with a disclaimer. I am the writer's current PhD student. However, this has not affected my review. For the longest time, I was looking for a book that would explain the dissertation process in simple terms, and with examples. I wasn't looking for a children's book (!), but I was tired of lectures and writings by Yoda-like professors who vaguely described the process. In school, I heard, "This topic is too broad." or "This is too narrow.", etc. I was very confused. This book starts with the first chapter explaining exactly what makes a good research idea. The rest of the book explains how to structure the proposal. All of this is done in a down-to-earth, incredibly coherent and lucid writing. I actually enjoyed reading this book as much as I enjoyed reading my favorite genre fiction books. I love the writer's style.I highly recommend this book to any graduate student.

Excellent guide to writing a dissertation proposal. The author writes in a very engaging style and clearly and succinctly covers all the bases. There may be some review if you've already taken some research methodology course work but Dr. Terrell puts all of your course work into the context of proposal writing. It all comes together in these pages.

Of all the books, textbooks and other resources I have in my library, I always end up referring to Steve Terrell's book for concrete examples of how to think about the problem I want to solve, and how to articulate it. Another reviewer mentioned it picks up where Creswell stops, and I think that is an excellent way to put it - It is an easy to use guide for thinking about the major parts of a dissertation, and the examples and guidelines are very helpful.

Thanks Dr. Terrell! This was the source of reference I needed to understand how to write and organize my dissertation proposal. This book picks up where Creswell leaves off, explaining the "who, where, when, & how" of the qualitative research method. I especially liked Dr. Terrell's explanation of interview protocols (p. 80) and the three approaches interviewers should use and consider. Thanks again Dr. Terrell.

This is book you can read in one sitting and it would give you the basics on your dissertation's organization. As you are reading it, jot down your ideas and you are going to end up with a first rough draft

Full disclosure: Dr. Terrell was my best professor at Nova Southeastern where I earned my Ed.S. He is not only amazing at explaining the use of statistics (his other book), he is the only professor that ever explained the dissertation process to me in a way that made sense. If you are writing a dissertation, this is the book you need.

This book met more than my expectations! Dr. Terrell is great at breaking things into a simplified method. I knew this book would be great because his book "Statistics Translated" is in my collection of doctoral resources. All doctoral students need to purchase this book!

This is super helpful. It outlines the requirements of dissertation proposals in a clear, easy to read manner.

A hopeful, inspiring blueprint to help parents prepare their college-educated children for landing a great job after graduationEarning a bachelor’s degree used to be a near-guarantee of financial stability and professional opportunity. Employers sought out talented graduates, provided them with additional on-the-job training, and set in motion a promising career path. Today, the paradigm has shifted—and employers expect experienced workers who are capable of doing the job from day one. But rarely does the college classroom develop that ability, and many young jobseekers have not used their undergraduate years to build the skills they need. As a result, a growing number of grads find themselves adrift, thousands of dollars in debt, and facing an uncertain job market that may leave them financially dependent on their parents for years to come, ultimately leading moms and dads to wonder: Why did I pay all that money? In There Is Life After College, Jeffrey J. Selingo, author of College (Un)bound, explains why the transition to post-college life has become more difficult and provides a step-by-step plan full of practical advice that every young professional can follow to jumpstart a career. He begins early in the process and helps direct parents and students to the right colleges, in the right locations, while also examining the benefits of detours, such as gap years and work experience before college. Selingo describes the types of courses that will impress employers and shows how they can evolve into the internships that build an impressive post-graduation résumé made up of in-demand skills and hands-on experience. Full of tips, advice, and insight, There Is Life After College is a wise, commonsense guide for the years from the end of high school through college graduation that will help every student—no matter their major or degree—find real employment. Parents will also find some peace of mind that their child’s time in college is well spent. “Amid all the anxiety among parents and students about how to get into college and how to pay for it, Jeffrey Selingo identifies the question we should be worried about: What comes after college? This book is an important wake-up call for anyone concerned with the future of our higher-education system, as well as an invaluable guide for students who want to make the most of their college years.”—Paul Tough, author of the New York Times bestseller How Children Succeed“Jeffrey Selingo’s book belongs on the desk of every career counselor, on the shelf of every parent, and in the hands of every young person planning his or her future. There Is Life After College is essential reading for navigating the new workplace terrain.”—Daniel H. Pink, New York Times bestselling author of To Sell Is Human and Drive“Why are so many young adults wandering or straggling in the job market? How can parents help their kids thrive out there? Drawing upon his decades of research and extensive conversations with twentysomethings, educators, and employers, Selingo convincingly frames the twenty-first-century job market as a wholly unfamiliar terrain, then provides comprehensive strategies and tactical tips for tackling it.”—Julie Lythcott-Haims, author of How to Raise an Adult“An eye-opening exploration of what the future holds for college grads. It’s a must-read for students—and their parents—to prepare for launching careers in a radically different job market.”—Adam Grant, New York Times bestselling author of Give and Take and Originals“Jeffrey Selingo’s There Is Life After College is essential reading for high school and college students and their parents. Selingo doesn’t just provide the answers, he makes sure his readers know the important questions to ask. Students looking for a road map to the future should get this book and heed its advice.”—Patricia Rose, director of career services, University of Pennsylvania

“Our twentieth-century education system is woefully out of sync with this twenty-first century economy that demands highly knowledgeable and flexible workers.” This quote from the introduction of Life After College perfectly sums up the entire book. To simplify this quote, education is woefully out of sync. When I graduated college Myspace was the reigning champion in social media. Facebook, at the time, was a hobby or diversion for a few college students. Today, Myspace is a memory and Facebook dominates not just social media but our entire online experience. Rapid technological innovations and global market change everything we know almost constantly. Businesses and organizations cannot keep up. Education, from kindergarten to graduate schools, lag behind even farther.Life After College is really about promoting education outside of college. Selingo introduces the reader to the importance of gap years, bridge programs, on-the-job training, internships, geographic advantages and so forth.College is not the final straw anymore. It may be a very important straw, but it is not the final one. Gone are the days when simply getting a college degree guarantees you economic stability. With a growing number on college graduates and competition from people around the world, a college graduate needs to show up with more than a fancy diploma. “What you do in college is more important that where you go to college” (215).I enjoyed this book a lot. Selingo knows his stuff and his writing is impeccable. I’m not fan of gap years and bridge programs. I think these programs only highlight the change needed in higher education. Additionally, I am not a supporter of gap years because I know without a doubt that a gap year would have been detrimental for me. Delaying formal education would have been a bad idea for me. Even though I changed my major three times in college and my career goals a dozen times, college still gave me the structure and space I needed to succeed. My favorite piece in the book is the chapter on employers. Usually we hear about how employers are frustrated at their new hirers, so it was great to hear how employers are also lost and unprepared.I am always disappointed when I read about students choosing a college or a career and there is very little discussion about passion or higher calling. Finding a job that pays well is important, but finding a job that employs your strengths, empowers your soul, and inspires your passion is absolutely vital. That's why I really enjoyed the last chapter of the book describing your career story. This is a great book with amazing information.

College is one of the biggest lifetime expenses and longest commitments of dedicated time many people ever make. The cost of college continues to rise and news outlets regularly report the high rates of underemployment and unemployment among recent college graduates. As a result, some families question whether a college education offers sufficient return on investment. Others are plowing ahead without thought and collecting six-digit debt burdens.Jeffrey Selingo’s recent book, There is Life After College: What Parents and Students Should Know about Navigating School to Prepare for the Jobs of Tomorrow, tackles the topic of the value of college, particularly with respect to employability. Selingo covers a lot of ground in the book, but together he paints a fair picture, warns of some common pitfalls, and offers some recommendations for current and future college students. The most significant value of this volume is that it answers questions vital to student success, efficient investment of tuition money and time, and successful navigation of the sometimes-confusing marketplace of colleges and universities. This is an accessible book that has important information for our time.Surprisingly, Selingo’s book points to the enduring value of a liberal arts degree. There is certainly a need for technical specialization in certain fields, but being a well-developed human is just as important, and perhaps more so, than purely technical proficiency. At worst, a strong liberal arts core, which is at the heart of a lot of Christian higher education, appears to be an asset rather than a liability in the marketplace.Certainly, this book is not a guaranteed method to be successful in life. In fact, Selingo simply assumes that success is being well-placed, well-compensated, and reasonably happy in one’s job. Whether the reader agrees with his end or not, he provides some helpful guidelines to get there. Even for those more interested in other careers, Selingo’s assurances of the value of liberal arts and meaningful experiences before and during college make this an engaging and valuable read.NOTE: I received a gratis copy of this volume with no expectation of a positive review. This is an edited version of a review posted at Ethics and Culture.

This is a practical and thorough handbook for students who are applying to college--or already in college, though it offer its greatest benefits to those who are still in the dizzying, fearful stages of figuring out where they want to apply. Selingo is smart, informed, and measured, avoiding alarmist warnings and unfeasible prescriptions in favor of lucid facts and thoughtful reasoning. If you are a parent who wants a state-of-the-art assessment of the best strategies for how to approach college that takes into account the importance of cultivating your child's individuality as well as the best opportunities for career development, then you can't do better then Selingo's clear-eyed account.

He had some good points, particularly about young adults making an education plan that works to get them employed. Some of his stats were a stretch.

Excellent book, with practical advice for parents and for students going to college or in college. Definite good read. I am recommending to all of my friends with college age children, and asking my kids and their friends to read it.

Jeffrey Selingo has written an indispensable resource for anyone who has or works with young adults. Every high school counselor should have this book on his/her desk.

A very timely book for the students and parents. A Sprint to the start.

Excellent read for parents getting children prepared for their next major life steps. It contains lots of good points to consider.

I bought this book to use in a lesson about rhyme schemes. I was teaching eighth grade at the time and was a bit skeptical about how well this book would be received by my students. I need not have worried. The students loved the story, the rhyming, and even the art. Many of my students are classified as "low performers," and read several levels below their grade. Using books like this helps motivate those students to engage in the lesson and also promotes language arts skills.

This is one of my most memorable childhood books. In fact, it shaped my life to become a person of integrity. It is a fun read and a great choice for teaching perseverance and inner strength to children. Strangely, I find myself even quoting this book nowadays from time to time... "I meant what I said and I said what I meant. An elephant's faithful 100%"

Really? You want me to review Horton Hatches the Egg? What is there left to say after nearly 60 years? It is beyond a classic. It is practically a sacred text in the children's literature genre. I read it so many times to my now grown daughter that I can still recite parts of it from memory. Every parent, and grandparent, should read it to their kids repeatedly. If everyone grew up emulating Horton it would be a much better world.

My 3 year old checked this out from the library and made me read it 2 to 3 times a day. The Easter bunny brought him his own copy and he's so excited. The words flow really well when you are reading (not a tongue twister like some Dr Seuss books). The text is kind of long-- not a really quick read but my 3 year old sits still the whole time.

Horton is a great role model! He only appears in 2 books (that I've found), but he should be in more! Not only does he keep his word, he does it at great personal cost, even when faced with his own death! Read this book to your kids over and over. I have 8 and they are all grown up, and none of them have turned into an axe murder yet, so I guess it worked!

GREAT children's book!! Love the rhyme style of writing. It is written in a way that both children and adults enjoy the story. The italics font help the reader read with inflection and the moral of the story is a good one.

In my opinion, the best book Seuss ever wrote! My daughter had this book as a child and now I bought this for her brand new son! First book in his library! Can't wait until he's old enough to recite it like she did!

a favorite classic Dr. Seuss story stressing perseverance

I've been surprised by how much I enjoyed this one. Admittedly, I did skim some of the anecdotes about AOL, but I understand why Case included them - they all correlate to a point he's making, and show you where all that insight is coming from. The real meat and potatoes of the book are Case's predictions about how the continued globalization aspect of tech will shape our culture and economy. He envisions a not-too-distant future that belongs to the everyman rather than the techie -- the best ideas coming from people in other fields, who are able to translate a flash of inspiration into a good-looking, functional app or service with ease. The potential impact of this, he argues, is that start-ups will no longer be clustered around San Francisco and New York. We could once again see thriving economies in America's heartland and south. If that sounds a little too Pollyanna optimistic for you, don't worry, he has equally compelling arguments for the ease with which America could be left in the global dust. Frankly, I applaud him for not shying away from that distinct possibility. As he explains, there's nothing keeping the tech industry based here in the US. We take it for granted, and that's extremely foolish. Plus our work visa laws make it very difficult to hire the best and brightest from other countries, so instead of bringing them over to strengthen our position as the world leader in this field, we're setting ourselves up to get usurped. In five years, Bombay could be the new San Francisco. Or Dubai. Or literally anywhere - it's the internet, it's global. And that's how easily the last bastion of American industry could be snuffed out.In some ways, the thesis of this book is an ultimatum. If you want outcome A, Case urges you to network with government officials and agencies, getting them on board with this third wave. The key, Case argues, is shifting focus away from solving everyday annoyances with tech and looking at the ways it can genuinely improve our society - which will keep us competitive and thriving enough to stay ahead of global competition.

Like a lot of "these kind" of books, you can get the gist of this in a page or two .. Basically, the "Matthew Effect" that draws all of the US investment money to centers like Silicon Valley, Cambridge etc, is leaving multitudes of other entrepreneurs behind, skewing the nature of tech progress in the US (for the worse) and, ultimately, diminishing the importance of the US as a global tech leader.I'll concede that this is an insightful idea, and I wanted to be drawn in and inspired. Unfortunately, the book doesn't seem to make great use of the 273 pages it occupies. There a lot of pictures of Steve Case with various powerful people, and I presume that the book manages to somehow spin these trips down memory lane into something faintly relevant to the main thesis, but there was an element of self aggrandizement, ill concealed by a fig-leaf of false modesty, the net effect of which was somewhat off-putting. The book just wasn't engaging enough in other ways to compensate. It didn't take too long before I just didn't want to bother with the chore of reading it further.

Steve begins the "Third Wave" with a nod to Alvin Toffler's book of the same name, which Steve read early in his career. Toffler's Third Wave described how the Information Revolution would transform society similarly to the Industrial Revolution and the Agricultural Revolution before. (In a nice nod to history, Toffler wrote a blurb at the beginning of this book). What's remarkable about this book is not that Steve Case predicts THAT the Internet will transform our lives in ways we haven't seen, but in great detail, he outlines HOW.Steve Case, the founder of AOL who was responsible for the first Internet experience of many people (including me and probably many folks reading this review), outlines his vision of "The Third Wave" of the Internet. The First Wave was what AOL and others did in the 1990s--just getting people online. The Second Wave, the Wave of Google, Facebook, Twitter, and more, created a flurry of people using the Internet to communicate and share information--but when you think about it, Steve says, the Internet has barely begun to transform the way we live our everyday lives. Our food, health care, education, and energy systems are pretty much the same as they were before the Internet--with slightly better information-sharing and communication. In the Third Wave, the Internet will integrate into everything we do.As Steve begins to predict how, he artfully and entertainingly outlines his lessons learned from AOL--successes and failures--as he sees many parallels between the Third Wave and the First Wave (when he and others built AOL). The stories still hold very real applications to entrepreneurs today. Unlike some books that make vaguely interesting predictions but don't go into detail, Steve then refreshingly and creatively goes into detail of HOW the next wave of the Internet will transform our lives, highlighting the "Rise of the Rest," how the changing face of the Internet will transform entrepreneurial opportunity outside of hubs that have won the Second Wave such as San Francisco and Boston. If you read the newspaper headlines or listen to any political candidates, you'd think that the economy in most cities in the world is a lost cause, but Steve convincingly portrays a different story. Highlighting startups from New Orleans to Nairobi, the Third Wave illustrates how cities you wouldn't expect are changing the face of how industries rise and economies grow, and anyone who cares about the future of technology needs to pay attention: the next great innovations in food systems, for example, could be more likely to come from Louisville or St. Louis than they are from San Francisco. The book also outlines the rise and importance of "impact investing," detailing how as the Internet integrates into our lives, the very nature of technology startups will change from seemingly frivolous apps that help us order food to areas that we have more traditionally thought are the realm of government or nonprofit--the areas that matter most, such as how we educate our kids and how we power our planet. Over the past 30 years, many tech entrepreneurs have been building companies with the sole purpose of creating as much financial value as possible; in the "Third Wave," we're starting to see an exponentially increasing group of people seeking to create social value as well. Finally, the book is a bit of a warning: Steve outlines how, after traveling thousands of miles across the country, venture capitalists, politicians, leaders in big corporations, and entrepreneurs alike have no idea how the Internet is about to change. People are building companies and making policy as if the way things work today will go on forever. Take financial services, for instance. Politicians talk about either "breaking up the banks" or regulating them less to ensure economic growth, and large banks spend incredible sums of money protecting advantages of incumbency, but technology startups are already literally breaking the functions of banks--lending, credit scoring, wealth management, payments, and more--into faster, more personalized services that everyday people are jumping on top of. Sectors such as health and energy are ready for similar disruption.So--what do we do in the face of the changing Internet? The final chapters helpfully outline whether you're in policy, a founder, an investor, or just someone looking to get involved in the next wave of the Internet. One of the best parts of the book is Steve telling his own story, as the Head of Pizza Development for Pizza Hut, hacking his own way into the early circles of people building the Internet in what he calls the "First Wave." This book is a useful, clear, specific way for people inspired to do the same in the Third Wave.If you're intrigued with how the Internet will transform our lives over the coming decades, interested in a roadmap for what the changing economy looks like, or just want a great story, pick up this book.

I loved it when you saidEntrepreneurship often reminds of the famous newspaper ad Ernest Shackleton is said to have placed before his 1914 attempt to explore Antarctica: “Men wanted for hazardous journey. Small wages. Bitter cold. Long months of complete darkness. Constant danger. Safe return doubtful. Honor and recognition in case of success.” That’s the beauty of entrepreneurship, and that's what you need to know when you sign up for it.Thanks for sharing your vision on the third wave. It's a total paradigm shift.
