Frank Roderus is one of my favorite Western authors. His books never disappoint, and this is no exception. He writes with a lot of good 'ol boy language from the time period, and lots of humor. He has a way of putting you right in the middle of the action of his story line. His books are good fun and hard to put down. However, having said that, I have to add that this is not one of my favorites of his -- thus only 4 stars. That's because this is mostly a book about what it must have been like for a young teenage boy on his first cattle drive. Not a lot of villains or wild gun fights or other actions like most Westerns. Just very vivid descriptions of what it was like for a young greenhorn on a cattle drive. Certainly the greenhorn gets into a lot of scrapes and narrow escapes, so it is a fun book to read. Just not the wild, shoot 'em up, good guy vs. bad guy of most Westerns. I'd still recommend it to anyone.
My biggest disappointment, was no epilogue. The story was good andDuster and Jesus were colorful characters comical, hard working and resourceful. It just need a homecoming scene when Duster presents his good fortune to his deprived family. That was his principle reason for going on the drive.
Great ðŸ‘writing definitely keeps you entertained a real page turner keeps you wanting more.Great job keep up the excellent work.Will be reading more of your books.
This was a very good book of a young man working to help his mother and, his family survive in Texas after the civil war. I'am sure you will enjoy this book.. Happy Reading........
This is a good coming of age western. The story starts at home and the action keeps you from going back. The characters are all solid and factual..
Young Duster hired on a cattle drive to help his mother and siblings. A greedy thief abducted him and friend Jesus. Thief was convicted.
Enjoyed this book greatly. Would recommend to all people but especially Western readers. You want be disappointed.
The story is about a 15 year old boy who signs on to round up wild cows and taking them to be sold. He did a lot of growing up to help his windowed Mother and family. Good read
