Larry Fink has been a professor at Yale University School of Art; Cooper Union School of Art and Architecture; Parsons the New School for Design; and Tyler School of Art, Temple University. Currently, he is a tenured professor of photography at Bard College. His work has been widely exhibited in the United States, including solo exhibitions at Light Gallery, New York; Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge; Museum of Modern Art, New York; and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

I bought the book because I recently purchased a new camera and wanted to learn how to use it properly. Maybe it was because the cover was so un-interesting, I don't know, but it was a couple of weeks before I picked it up to read. I must say, I learned more in the two hours it took to read than any course I had ever taken. I guess I'am a visual learner, but I started to understand the various teachings and insights on photography composition - it truly was a workshop experience. A great book about a somewhat vague subject matter.
I just finished reading this workshop book, and even after 50 years of photo / art work, I can say that I gained a number of insights from it, some profound. There are a few places in the work where you may say "Oh, come on", but in many others I think you will say "Wow". I highly recommend this book to people serious about their photography, from students to working pros. Enjoy!
I think most people who really love the act and process of making photographs, especially street/snapshot photography will really enjoy this one.In fact, I have really enjoyed this entire series by Aperture and I recommend them to anyone who truly loves the medium.

To be honest, if you can't appreciate Larry Fink's photography, it would be best for all concerned if you sold your photography equipment and took up playing the piano or perhaps dart making. The foundational mindset, the nugget of artistic spark, the compassion for all humanity, required to understand the true purpose of all this infernal shutter clicking is missing from your soul ;) Move along, there is nothing for you here. Perhaps take a selfie instead.

GREAT BOOK AND GREAT PURCHASE
This book is one of the best descriptions of the photographic process I have ever read. If you’re looking for a photographer to reassure you that photographs can give you quick, easy readings as to their meaning, Larry Fink is not your guy. But if, like me, you know that life can be messy and chaotic, dissonant instead of harmonic, and that looking for solid ground under your feet is an exercise in futility, then Larry Fink is your photographer.This book is a series of brilliant riffs, with many of Larry’s greatest pictures, on the nature of the photographic process. It is not a how to do it, A to Z, soup to nuts manual on taking pictures. If you read it closely however, you might find yourself entering Larry’s world of the miraculous possibilities inherent in photography. In reading Larry’s words, and looking at his pictures, I’m reminded of Grace Slick’s advice from the Jefferson Airplane, “…you gotta let go, you gotta let go, you gotta let go…â€The key to the kind of picture making advocated by Larry comes on page 30, where he says that the story in a good photograph unfolds as a question. If the photograph gives you all the answers, it becomes stagnant. Much of photojournalism is designed to give the viewer answers. These kinds of pictures misunderstand the difference between photographs and words. Photography is a language of symbols, of space organized in a specific moment in time, and, as such, is inherently ambiguous. Their very nature is to rebel against specific readings. Larry’s work accentuates this tendency in photographs. His work does not manipulate you to have a specific response, they challenge and free you to create your own meaning.Larry Fink’s photography will not make you feel comfortable. It will not answer many of your questions. But if you’re open to what he is saying, in his words and pictures, some doors in your mind might open. That is his gift to us all in this remarkable book.
