My late father was a Mr. Wizard chemistry teacher so science is in my life by birth as well as by education. Being unable to recall many of Dad's teaching experiments that didn't require a lab, I searched for a guide to help me share my love of science with my granddaughter in much the same spirit. Let me tell you, Tom Robinson's book is IT!! Dad would have been as pleased with it as I am. It's for everyone--no prior science education or special equipment needed, and you won't blow up the house. The experiments are well-planned and clearly explained. They can be grouped by topic or by complexity and will appeal to a wide age range. My granddaughter is almost 10 and enjoys the book even more than when we first bought it last year. As always with things like this, adult supervision is needed, but she can do many of the projects herself. For younger kids, say 7 and under, you'll need to do some of them yourself but it's easy to engage even an "itty bitty scientist" in what's happening. Another factor I've appreciated is that some of the experiments are not "instant gratification" whiz-bangs, which helps teach patience and persistence, assets it's good to acquire as early as possible.
My daughter absolutely loves science and everything to do with it. She was always looking up different science "experiments" she could do at home so I found this book and got it for her. We have done every one in the book at least once. The directions are extremely easy to follow and most items for these experiments can be found at home.
I bought this as a Christmas present for my 7 year old son. The experiments are easy to do, and most of them use items you already have around the house, or can buy cheaply. Even my three year old likes to get involved, and while he doesn't always get the science behind each activity, he's entertained by the results. Our favorite activity so far is definitely the Balloon rockets!I currently home school my son and this book has come in handy for a few projects we have done together. He keeps a science journal where he writes his hypothesis and we are able to look back on past experiments.I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has a child that is interested in science or asks a lot of questions.
I purchased this book with two others for my 5 year old granddaughter who enjoys doing experiments. Well, this book IS AMAZING! The heck about it being for kids. This book can be thoroughly enjoyed by adults assisting the kids too. The book is broken down into the various fields of science with the experiments offering a good base of knowledge. It also has games, puzzles and jokes for a little diversion. It reinforces the scientific method throughout the book without becoming off-putting to kids. This book will not disappoint and will certainly make any child currently disinterested in science see how amazing it really is.
Bought as present for a 7 year old boy to get him excited about STEM.The experiments offer good step-by-step instructions and explanations to help guide the work.Basic drawings also help facilitate the instructions.
Very fun book, perfect gift for a nine-year-old. Instructions are clear and simple, and most of the ingredients or objects to complete the experiments are easy to find. This is going to be a Christmas gift. I can't wait to see the reaction and then all the cool experiments and I'll get to do.
I love the everything books. I had them for my kids when they were growing up and now I uses them with my grands. I could never come up with these ideas on my own and it gives us hours and hours of fun while we learn. It has easy to follow instructions as well.
Great science experiments! I have now bought two of these, one about 8 years ago? And one a few days before I wrote this review. Can't wait to do the experiment with the kids my son watches, on how to blow up a balloon with a banana??!!! The kids are excited about all the different science experiments there are.
