From the Author

"Filled with beautiful photography. . . . You will treasure this book." -- Bette Largent, President, National Carousel Association ///////////////////////////////////////////////// CONTENTS San Francisco Zoo Carousel Yerba Buena Gardens Carousel Golden Gate Park Carousel ///////////////////////////////////////////////// SAMPLE #1 SAN FRANCISCO ZOO CAROUSEL The San Francisco Zoo Carousel was built in 1921 in Philadelphia by the Dentzel Carousel Company under William Dentzel, son and heir of the company's founder, Gustav Dentzel. After a short stint at the Pacific City Amusement Park in Redwood City, California, it was installed in San Francisco in 1925, in what was then a children's park but is now part of the zoo. The carousel has been restored several times, most notably in 2000-2002. Alongside its Dentzel carvings, the carousel features figures by the legendary craftsman M. C. Illions of Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York. Another of the horses is much older than the carousel itself -- a "transitional Dentzel listener," so called because of the position of the ears. Carved between 1885 and 1890, it is said to be one of only two such figures in the world. The carousel is today officially named the Eugene Friend Carousel, after a San Francisco civic leader and philanthropist. ///////////////////////////////////////////////// SAMPLE #2 YERBA BUENA GARDENS CAROUSEL The carousel at Yerba Buena Gardens is located beside the Children's Creativity Museum -- named Zeum at the time of these photos -- near the entrance to the Moscone Convention Center. (The carousel is operated by the museum on behalf of the city.) It was built by Charles Looff in 1906 in East Providence, Rhode Island. San Francisco was the original destination of the carousel when built, but because of the 1906 earthquake and fire, it was diverted to Seattle's Luna Park. A few years later, though, it was sent on to Playland-at-the-Beach in San Francisco, where it operated from 1914 to 1973. After the amusement park closed, a private purchaser took the carousel to New Mexico for restoration. The carousel then operated from 1984 to 1998 in southern California at Long Beach's Shoreline Village, near the Queen Mary. But it returned in 1998 to San Francisco, where it was restored further and installed at its present home. Additional restoration took place in 2013-2014. The carousel is housed in a glass pavilion, which bathes it in light much brighter than enjoyed by most carousels. Music is supplied by recordings. It has had a variety of names in this location -- Zeum Carousel, Children's Creativity Carousel, and since its 2014 reopening, LeRoy King Carousel. King was a redevelopment commissioner, civil rights activist, and labor leader who led the effort to bring the carousel back to San Francisco. His inspiration for that effort? He and his future wife rode this carousel at Playland-at-the-Beach on their very first date. ///////////////////////////////////////////////// SAMPLE #3 GOLDEN GATE PARK CAROUSEL The Golden Gate Park Carousel was built in 1914 by the Herschell Spillman Company of North Tonawanda, New York, and is one of only two surviving four-row carousels by that company. (The other is at Tilden Park in Berkeley.) Before arriving at Golden Gate Park in 1940, the carousel operated at Lincoln Park in Los Angeles, 1914-1931; Lotus Isle in Portland, 1931-1933; and the Golden Gate International Exposition (World's Fair) on Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay, 1939-1940.  When the carousel broke down in 1977, the San Francisco Art Commission offered to help fund its complete restoration. The commission's choice for the job was Ruby Newman, a young muralist and theater set and costume designer. Heading a team that included a boat restorer from Seattle and a woodcarver born in Austria, Newman mostly completed the restoration by 1984.  Instead of trying to restore the carousel's original colors, Newman devised a color scheme of her own, but one that still aimed to accent the details of the carvings. The result was a stunning and unique carousel mingling the talents and conceptions of the carvers with the bold vision of a contemporary artist. Newman's coloring has been mostly maintained throughout a series of touch-up paintings -- though not entirely. (At the time of these photos, another artist had recently been called in to make the lion's eyes less fierce!)  The carousel is the third to operate at this location, its earliest predecessor dating back to 1888, when it was powered by steam. The present pavilion was built in the early 1890s. A 1922 Gebrueder Bruder band organ was installed during Newman's restoration and is still operational. But music is normally supplied by recordings, because -- as a carousel operator there put it -- the organ is too loud! Â

This is a gift for a friend and she has riden on 2 of the 3 photographed. The photos are excellent and colorful.People in the SF Bay Area May just re-live their childhoods. The animals’ carvers are identified. The text is minimal which is ok. You will learn a brief descriptions of where all the carousels have been.

I was really looking forward to reading this book. I have ridden all these carousels and photographed them myself. I love the craftsmanship that goes into creating each horse or animal. They are true works of art. I was hoping to learn more about the three carousels. Well I was extremely disappointed to find very little information included in the book. The picture captions didn't include much in the way of information either. Alan Shepard used three days of vacation photos to put together his book. I am surprised he found a publisher to print this. Actually the printing is extremely poor. The color is not very good. The book was rated four stars overall which is very misleading. All but one of the reviews I read had gotten a free book for what they said was an honest review. The reviewers didn't seem to know much about a carousel other than riding one. If you know anything about carousels don't waste your money on this book.

I enjoyed it but I may be prejudice a group in San Francisco and Playland at the beach in Golden Gate Park with special they probably learn how to ride a horse of both of those mirrors and also can you do the boardwalk in Santa Cruz Play land at the beach in the zoo Golden Gate Park where they favorites no great favorites

Who doesn't love a carousel horse? One of my fondest dreams has always been to get my hands on one. Do I have room for it? Nope. Do I still want one? Second only to a sword, yep. Actually, if I really had my wish I would have gone into carousel restoration, but that's a whinge for another day.Carousel horses are never the common chestnut, that uniform brown that has always made me perk up anytime I saw a gray horse entered in the Kentucky Derby. No, these horses forever frozen in mid-leap are always glorious, gorgeous splashes of color and dramatic markings – or, if brown does occur, it's a rich red or golden brown that's hard to ignore. The three San Francisco-area carousels, by my favorite companies/artists Looff and Dentzel and Herschell Spillman, each receive just about a third of the book; a single page of text outlines the history, followed by page after beautiful page of photos of the circular menageries – the horses and rabbits and tigers and giraffes and goats and camels and cats and even more fantastical animals, bedecked with ornate saddles and bridles and flags and mascots and – my favorites – occasionally armor. Even those parts of the merry-go-rounds that always interested me least, the scenery panels from the center and top canopy and chariots, are shown to their best advantage. I was expecting much less from this book, and was delighted to find over 100 photographs. I couldn't ask for more. The usual disclaimer: I received this book via Netgalley for review.

'Circles of Delight: Classic Carousels of San Francisco' by Aaron Shepard is a pictorial look at three carousels in San Francisco. The city boasts carousels by all three of the most important American carousel makers. The three carousels featured are at the San Francisco Zoo, Yerba Buena Gardens, and Golden Gate Park. Each section begins with a history of the carousel, such as where it was built and where it was located before it ended up in it's current location. Also included are renovation dates and unusual features of the carousel. After the introduction, pages are devoted to photographs of the carousel animals, close ups of interesting details, and shield and rounding board details. Of the three carousels featured, my favorite was the Golden Gate Park carousel, which is the last one in the book. The photographer spent three days photographing the carousels while on a business trip to the city. The pictures are good and the detail is worth studying. I enjoyed reading the brief history of each carousel, and looking through the photos.I received a review copy of this ebook from Shepard Publications and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this ebook.

I received a NetGalley copy in exchange for an honest review.I find there to be something just magical about carousels. The book includes perhaps three or four carousels and each one received about a page of information about it's history, which I found the be very interesting. The following pages were numbers of beautiful photos of the animals, chariots, and art of the particular ride mentioned.I've never before thought about all the work that has to be put into making a carousel, painting it, carving the animals. It really is amazing.I wanted to reach out and run my fingers over the wooden surface of the horses, the lion's mane, but alas books do not work that way.I enjoyed learning about the carousels and styles of the animals that are a part of them. The details on the saddles are incredible, and there is so much variety in each creature.I hope to acquire this book in a physical format, because the computer just cannot do these incredible images justice.
