Sam Shepard is the Pulitzer Prize–winning author of more than forty-five plays. He was a finalist for the W. H. Smith Literary Award for his story collection Great Dream of Heaven, and he has also written the story collection Cruising Paradise, two collections of prose pieces, Motel Chronicles and Hawk Moon, and Rolling Thunder Logbook, a diary of Bob Dylan's 1975 Rolling Thunder Review tour. As an actor he has appeared in more than thirty films, and he received an Oscar nomination in 1984 for his performance in The Right Stuff. His screenplay for Paris, Texas won the Grand Jury Prize at the 1984 Cannes Film Festival, and he wrote and directed the film Far North in 1988. Shepard's plays, eleven of which have won Obie Awards, include Buried Child, The Late Henry Moss, Simpatico, Curse of the Starving Class, True West, Fool for Love, and A Lie of the Mind, which won a New York Drama Desk Award. A member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, Shepard received the Gold Medal for Drama from the Academy in 1992, and in 1994 he was inducted into the Theatre Hall of Fame.

Although I had heard of the great playwright Sam Shepard for years, I never saw or read any of his plays. When he died a month or two ago, I read an article on his brilliance and was moved to read this book of seven of his plays. I have just finished reading "Buried Child," for which he won the Pulitzer Prize. It greatly surpasses any other play I have seen or read. I can hardly wait to read the remaining six plays. Do your mind a favor and get this book. I promise you won't regret it.

I've yet to read all the stories here but the two I have read, Buried Child and Curse of the Starving Class, were well written and kept me enthralled as I devoured the stories flipping the pages faster and faster to find out what dark secrets and horrible truths were waiting to be revealed. The man has a gift for writing and keeping some themes that are a common thread throughout his stories, he may have daddy issues and be traumatized by his drunken and dysfunctional family but it makes for amazing literature. I would recommend this to those that love literature and those that enjoy a good Gothic experience.

This collection features his finest and most mature work (Buried Child, Curse, True West) plus the best of his earlier plays (La Turista, The Tooth of Crime). They all showcase his great humor and startling use of language and imagery. Th more mature works deal, unflinchingly with american families. Tongues and Savage Love, which he did in collaboration with Joseph Chaiken, are wonderful, poetic meditations of existence and identity. If you are interested in Shepard as a playwright this is the finest collection of his best work. After this, I recommend seeking out the plays Fool for Love and A Lie of the Mind, for more of his "mature" work and then also Angel City as another prime example of the imaginative flights he took with his earlier work. This book needs to be renamed - the "E" (now, 2017) indicates that it's associated with 'Electronic" versus the original intention of the 1995 print of "Entrepreneur" - BUT, having said that, the book is a must read for ANYONE who wants to become an entrepreneur and can't let go of the technical aspect of the business. Good advice and information.

This book literally changed my life. I own a small service business with around 15 employees. I had been struggling for years doing all managerial work myself so that it was done up to my standards. We did great work but at the expense of my sanity!A mentor told me to read this book. The E-Myth was the driving factor that took my small business which had been controlling my life and transformed it into a business I could run remotely. Before I read this book I was working on site 9 hours a day 6 days a week. Less than a year after reading this I was able to take a six-month vacation around the world while my business ran itself. If you own a small business you need to read this book as soon as possible.

I love this book. I read it first two years ago, when I'd barely started my business. I re-read it again, and the richness of it all is amazing. I've come so far (we've expanded tho London, Los Angeles and Atlanta), and so much of that is owed to this book.Is it perfect? No - it's seriously cringy when the author talks about how beautiful and youthful his protege is. Ugh. But other than that, I love it and recommended it to all small business owners. Read it.

More play on the original book. This version contains some great general guide-lines for systemizing your business, however, the author is more interested in guiding you to his website to purchase a variety of courses and his "dream room" seminar series. The book is heavy on concept but short on detail. If you've read the original E-Myth, you would probably be safe to pass on this book. It's pretty much the same information re-framed.

This is the most important book I've read in the last four years. And it's amazing that it was written over twenty years ago. If you're a small business owner or thinking of starting a business of your own, you MUST read this book. Don't listen to the clowns on Facebook who will have you earning a million dollars your first year in the business. That's B.S. and you'll waste thousands of dollars like I did. READ THIS BOOK FIRST! It's changing my life!

Easily worth the time to read. Being self-employed for 10 years, the author struck a chord with me time and again. I knew of the struggle between the inner technician, manager and entrepreneur but never had the framework to understand it. If you're a person who has marketable, technical talent and is self-employed or thinking of being self-employed, I'd say invest in this book and save yourself some inner turmoil.Somebody gave this book 4 stars because of how long-winded the author can be... which is definitely something he does. It feels like 3 pages could be condensed to 2 paragraphs sometimes. That said, I felt that half the time it was just annoying and half the time it really helped the point of the story he was telling. It's long-winded, but that often plays into the lesson that he's retelling. So I'd give it a 4.5 stars if I'm really being critical. That said, it's about the insights and lessons you draw from it. Worth the read.

I owned my own successful retail business for 12 years and this was the Resource Book that helped the most. While I was managing for someone else, they gifted me a copy of the original E-myth. This newer Revisited version is even better. Here's the core message - it's easy to spend time working IN your business, but If you want it to grow, you need to block out critical time to work ON your business. IN is ordering and waiting on customers - the day to day stuff. ON is closing your door and planning how you're going to grow to the next level - learning how to be the best at what you do - understanding your competition and carving out your Unique Selling Proposition that will help you win. I keep a couple of copies around to share with new business friends. What a gift!!

This was highly recommended by my dog trainer but the writing was difficult to follow so I didn't finish it.

I picked up this book in the library. I consider myself pretty open-minded about dog training.I believe that we can use similar "corrections" that a mother dog would use or adult dogs would use with each other and be perfectly OK. I bit of a startle or mild pain is not a bad thing. But, when I got to page 38 where he advocates using a length of washer hose with a wooden dowel in it to strike a dog on the muzzle to correct some biting behaviors, I reached my limit. If you are trying to save yourself from a dog attack, then fine. But, this is supposed to be a correction??Maybe I am just a too tender-hearted person, but there has got to be better ways than this. I have no doubt that done exactly as described, the dog would "behave", but only through blind fear! I don't want a dog in that condition!Zero stars is my rating on the part of the book I read....

This book is really poorly written. He takes 20 pages to agonizingly explain a concept that can be explained in a couple of sentences.I am a professional dog trainer and was hoping to learn any new tips or ideas to improve my game.This book is very hard to read. Very dry. I struggle to stay awake. Very self grandising and sounds like a preacher. Skip it. Just spend a couple of hours on YouTube.

This was the first dog training book i used for obedience training at age 10 , someone borrowed but never returned my copy . Tried to order it via Amazon and it never arrived ... But it is a good reference ,though quite high standards and expects more common sense than newer techniques . It is a nice collectible for those fans of William Koehler as a dog trainer . Though only used this book as a reference for obedience and a guide to problem solving ....but i will give Mr. Koehler the benefit of the doubt that his techniques work .

I'm not sure where to begin when discussing this book. To be fair, let me start by saying that some of these methods will work if used properly by a trainer with impeccable timing. All of the methods in this book will produce results. The problem is that the results are likely to be negative rather than positive.The problem seems to stem from Mr. Koehler's attitude that dogs are sinful con artists who choose to disobey out of a need to be spiteful. Dogs will disobey and they will try to explore the boundaries of what they can get away with, but it isn't to spite you or deliberately make you angry. There are many other more effective and less absurd methods of dealing with this behavior. In fact, more than any other problem with the Koehler Method and those who adhere to it, I see a tendency to provide the uneducated with a false dichotomy of two choices, either do it our way or resign yourself to having an untrained dog. This ridiculous set of false alternatives allows them to force a prospective adherent to make the lesser of two unpleasant choices when, in reality, many other alternatives exist. You can have a very well-trained dog without resorting to the methods in this book.If you are unconvinced that this method is outdated and inappropriate, then do a search for the Koehler website and read the articles there. Then read Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God and notice the eerie similarities. The Koehlers and their associates seem to have developed this weird fire and brimstone attitude towards canine behavior that defies the considerable amount of research done on the subject in the last twenty years.On the other hand, if you really enjoy beating a dog and you feel the compulsion to use phrases like "limp-wristed" and "namby-pamby" when referring to anyone who dares to disagree with you, or if you find yourself routinely musing about the eternal damnation of anyone who doesn't subscribe to your worldview, then perhaps this book is for you.

Most dog training books are too general and are "more guidelines than actual rules". This book on the other other hand, gives you step by step, super simple, firefighter friendly, "do it exactly like this" instructions that the only way to not have success is to not follow instructions. It truly is like having Mr. Koehler right there telling you exactly what to do. The best part is that this is really two books in one.The first section deals with explaining the goals, purpose and differences between the different levels of "guard dog". From simple "Alarm" dogs that give warning, "Threat" dogs that will stand their ground and protect and "Attack" dogs who will go all the way like Police and Military K9s. Each Class of guard dog receives detailed and guided "agitation" and control training. A huge amount of time is spent on teaching you how to select a dog with specific physical and natural emotional traits and protective attributes so that you start out with a dog that will be mentally and emotionally stable after completing the training. The author warns AGAINST using this training with just ANY dog!!! That would lead to a dangerous and unstable animal.The second Section is the same as the Traditional Obedience training book by Koehler and is excellent. Again, each skill is presented in a "Step-by-step" manner with tips and aids for problem students, both human and animal. It covers everything from feeding and shelter, to housebreaking, to iron clad heeling, sitting , down, present for inspection and "Come" recall.... OFF LEASH!!!Off leash is truly the best test for any training system. Mr. Koehler's system trains the Owner as much as the Dog and is focused on allowing the Dog to make good decisions and CHOOSE to obey. This is how dogs work in their normal psychology. They NEED a leader. They NEED to have clear expectations and direction. That is why they are PACK animals and have a Pack mentality. That is how they stay mentally and emotionally stable.If you are of the "This is Smoochie. He's my widdle baby. Yes you are. Do it for mommy 'cause I wuv you" crowd, then is is DEFINITELY not the training system for you. You don't need a better trained dog. The Dog needs a better trained human.

The Last Governor is an encyclopedic account of Chris Patten's governorship in Hong Kong (1992-1997). Dimbleby was given unprecedented access to the inner working of HK Government House, as well as back-stage passes to some of its top bureaucrats. The author's view was very clear and he made no apology for it. Patten's adversaries were often dismissed as "apologists" or "self-proclaimed experts". Despite the author's obvious bias, the book was meticulously researched, engaging and a worthy collection for anyone interested in the history of this part of the world. Dimbleby has donated all the research material, including notes, interviews, tape recordings, to the University of Hong Kong for future researchers. A BBC documentary was made based on the same material.Chris Patten was a very popular governor. Hong Kong people loved him. His affection for Hong Kong was also obvious, I remembered watching the live coverage of the hand-over on Australian TV. I didn't realise it until quite recently - how often does Australian TV cover an overseas "political" event LIVE ? The 2008 Obama's election was a rarity. Patten was a down-to-earth and personable governor. There were numerous stories of him having "egg tart" for lunch at a local bakery, or chatting to shop keepers while casually strolling down the street. I am a little disappointed that Dimbleby didn't say much about the rest of the family though. What was it like for Patten's wife and daughters ? What was on their mind when they boarded the royal yacht after the ceremony ? They were leaving their friends behind, the daughters were leaving part of their childhood in HK. They couldn't have known if anyone of them would ever be welcome back to the Island again. It must have been such raw emotion. One can sense some of this emotion in the writing, the author wrote in his very last paragraph,"Chris Patten had fought a sustained public and private battle.......It had been a gruelling and often lonely five years. The scale of his purpose and the character of his responsibility had required rare qualities of leadership: a clear vision, an abnormal resolve and a profound sense of public duty. The last governor of Hong Kong had arrived in the colony as a politician, hopeful of success. He would depart as a statesman, knowing failure as well as victory, but in dignity and with honour."

Jonathan Dimbleby's The Last Governor is a tour de force that gives the reader an insider's perspective into the tenure of Hong Kong's last colonial leader, Chris Patten. Dimbleby treats the reader to a narrative account of the trials and tribulations that Patten faced as he attempted to enact democratic reforms in Great Britain's last colonial jewel. Although one would undoubtedly expect the government of the People's Republic of China (PRC) to be vociferously opposed to any belated attempt by the British colonial authorities to bequeath a semblance of democracy on Hong Kong, Dimbleby makes the case that Patten's biggest enemies often came from within his own government. Dimbleby's revelations that selected British cabinet and Foreign Office officials shamelessly sought to downgrade the importance of Hong Kong and sacrifice Patten's proposed reforms on the alter of commercial relations with the PRC, resulted in Dimbleby being investigated by the Foreign Office for possible receipt of secret intelligence materials. Dimbleby was cleared of these allegations, but the vast array of insider information that Dimbleby amassed for this book strengthens the strident arguments that Dimbleby advances. Only a handful of participants in The Last Governor emerge with their reputations unscathed. Hong Kong's local and international business elite is portrayed as willing supplicants in the PRC's efforts to scale back personal and political liberties after Hong Kong's reversion to PRC sovereignty, a position easily enforced by PRC threats to their commercial interests. Martin Lee and Emily Lau, two of Hong Kong's leading democracy advocates, are portrayed as actually weakening Patten's push for democratic reforms through their uncompromising approach. The various representatives of the PRC are painted as unbending ideologues with little appreciation of Hong Kong's way of life. Dimbleby is most critical of the British officials, past and present, who acted to either inadvertently or deliberately sabotage Patten's governorship. Most prominent on this list is Sir Percy Cradock, Great Britain's lead negotiator in the 1984 Joint Declaration and former Ambassador to the PRC. Cradock comes off as a modern-day Neville Chamberlain, willing to cut a bad deal with an unsavory power for the sake of diplomatic expediency. Cradock compounded this error by working both privately and publically to weaken Patten's political position and policies. Dimbleby also argues that the Cradock mentality had infected the entire Foreign Office and selected members of John Major's cabinet, who worked to undercut Patten and sell-out Hong Kong in favor of better commercial relations with the PRC. The greatest strength of The Last Governor is also its greatest weakness. While such open access to Patten gives this book the necessary dramatic propulsion, it also strikes the reader as serving as Patten's mouthpiece. While Dimbleby does downgrade Patten for underestimating the challenges he was to face as Governor, Dimbleby's portrayal of Patten as the lonely David fighting against the multi-headed Goliath seems to diminish the numerous allies Patten needed to help him accomplish the limited reforms he was able to enact. Dimbleby could have also delved deeper into the political rationale behind the PRC's bargaining position and policies regarding Hong Kong. The Last Governor is highly recommended reading for anyone interested in Hong Kong, Chinese, or British affairs and to readers interested in how bureaucratic politics affects international diplomacy. Dimbleby's prose is brisk and should easily captivate and entrance the reader. Keep in mind that this is not an academic tome, so Dimbleby's point of view is repeatedly expressed without reservation or apology.

In fact the irony that Britain failed to give any form of representative government in the 150 years prior to the handover, but yet felt the need to chastise the Chinese for acting in the same way seems completely lost in this account. There is no exploration of Patten's political opponents, beyond the cursory dismissal of their agendas. There is also no detectable criticism of Patten at all, even though he clearly failed in several areas - most noticeably with his incredibly gauche handling of the relationship with the Chinese. So while at times this book is an interesting and revealing account of the relationship between Patten and Downing Street, it singularly fails to give a rounded account of the political situation at the time in Hong Kong.

I loved reading this book because of its diversity. You get a well rounded history from multiple accounts of the many cursed expeditions into the Amazon. The crazy men who dared to do it (both present and past), violent tribal peoples (though you understand why they're so hostile to foreigners), the nearly impassable Amazon terrain, the odd and bizarre creatures that reside their, and in the end, a plausible archaeologically based theory behind why people thought there was a large rich city once in the Amazon. Like all things, people's imaginations run wild, but the author also brings you back down the earth with the reality of the jungle which left me with the overall conclusion that these grandiose theories of a Lost City of Z were really just grand exaggerations of much more practical evidence of a fairly developed, but long lost, past civilization.Some people criticize the book for only getting to the final expedition at the very end of the book. But I believe this criticism is unwarranted. You can't just jump into the final expedition without getting the backstory and context of the people, place, and time. I feel the author did a marvelous job of jumping around and pacing the book, so that when you get to the final expedition, you're well versed in the context and prepared to understand why things went down the way they did.Fantastic read, and I shall keep this book as a permanent fixture in my collection. Too bad I only got it in paperback... dang.

I ordered this novel after reading "The Lost City Of The Monkey God: A True Story" by Douglas Preston. Several reviewers of Mr. Preston's book referred "The Lost City Of Z" as being quite a bit better and more true to what has been regarded as classic archaeology. After reading "Z" I have to agree with those reviewers. This novel is mainly concerned with the exploration of the Amazon region in the early 1900's, with the technology of boat motors, airplanes, and short wave radio just beginning to be utilized. "Monkey God" is set in today's time and the explorers have new and up-to-date technology available to help them locate and analyze the ruins that they were searching for.However, Douglas Preston's story feels more 'human' and draws you in from the descriptions of the various obstacles encountered and (sometimes) overcome. His first person descriptions of what he and his team went through take you right into the heart of their group. You encounter the rain, insects, snakes, diseases, and other hardships that they experience. It feels personal, actually uncomfortably personal, making it too easy to put yourself in their shoes and put their pain and discomfort on your own shoulders. Reading "Z" was like watching a National Geographic special. Reading "Monkey God" was like watching (and experiencing) the difficulties constantly encountered by participants on the TV show "Naked and Afraid".It took me a while to get into the rhythm of "The Lost City Of Z" because of the shifting perspectives and time frames. David Grann obviously did a lot of research and utilized many different resources in order to compile a lot of factual and interesting information pertinent to the travails of Percy Fawcett while searching for his 'holy grail'. Colonel Fawcett is to be commended for his drive, intelligence, and physical abilities in being able to challenge such difficult conditions over and over again. His accomplishments in helping to map previously unexplored regions are surprising and extremely admirable considering the myriad obstacles encountered.Unfortunately, while each has its place, "Z" reads more like a history book while "Monkey God" is a living and breathing adventure. Each to his own.

I found this book interesting in many ways. It was easy to read since it touched many subjects that are familiar to me. The book covers historic facts of the Victorian age and its influence in the world but specially South America and the countries of Bolivia and Brazil whose Amazonian region was and is difficult to explore or study. It is well balanced since the book covers many areas that help understand different points of view of previous times compared to present times. I found answers to questions that come up as you read this book. For instance, to refer to the tribes that populate the Amazonian forests as savages, made me question who is anyone to judge, specially after the atrocities of WWI, described in the book as well as all the inhuman spectacle of WW2. Also, it explains what was happening in the areas related to the fields he got to be involved in like archeology and the discovery of Machu Pichu which may have influenced him.Fawcett’s motivations could have been banal if they were glory or becoming famous but he showed an ethical position not usual in his time which was to approach the indigenous people in a non violent way, trying not to use arms and ordering to drop arms even if danger was felt. He would raise his hands and confront the Indians which gave him good results since he got to be treated as a sort of friend. This respectful behavior, considering the times, was something positive to take in account when trying to define Fawcett's personality which could show his humanity, something to learn from him. Now, consider that Indiana Jones is partly based in the real life of Percy Fawcett and P.F. is one of the characters of one of his movies; however, Indiana Jones had no problem in shooting for entertainment.Having lived in Bolivia and having done some exploration myself I may have a different take to this adventure. To start, one of Fawcett's motivation was as normal as to answer why people climb mountains, the answer is,” because it's there". I have done hiking going from La Paz at 12000 ft. above sea level to about 15000 ft. and then down to the tropics of Yungas which is the start of the Amazonian jungle all along an Inca road which was partly well preserved considering hundreds of years of use. After getting familiar with this subtropical region, it happened that I read The mines of King Salomon and this book, cited in Grann's book as well, inspired me to go farther. My plan was to go to an uncharted area in the forest called Madidi, which is a national park now. My motivation was just to see what no one else has seen. I was able to enlist two university friends who seemed interested but who back down at the last minute. Next year I tried again but I had a sudden back ache problem. Going back to the book, Fawcett's intentions may have been to attain fame by finding not El Dorado but something like Machu Pichu which was “found” in 1911. He visited Cusco and Tiahuanacu and was able to marvel at the achievements of these civilizations. But destiny put him in the Bolivian jungle with the aid of the British government, it wasn't something that he was looking for but that opened his eyes and his innate explorer spirit.Before I even finished reading this book I was compelled to read about the original source, Percy Fawcett's own words, compiled in a book “Lost trail, lost cities” by Brian Fawcett, his son. By reading it, I found out that in his first trip he was hired by the Bolivian government, P. Fawcett does not mention Brazil in the first expedition which was actually work. Now, there are historical details that are not clear. The border problem between Bolivia and Brazil was already established in 1903 after a short war between these two countries and the result was the annexation of the Acre, an area of 190,000 square Kilometers (75,000 sq mls), more than ¾ the size of UK. By the way, something that this book could have in next edition is a better map, the map of Bolivia is not clear.There are details in the Fawcett's book that could have been part of Grann's book or even the movie, like the moment when, after departing La Paz, one of many mules P.F. had, runs away and that was the mule that had the $£1000 in gold he received as part of the payment from the Bolivian government, an interesting historical detail, a “jingling treasure” in the saddle bags. However, Fawcett explains that the mule was brought back by local people who he rewarded. P .F. describes foreigners by name but there is no mention of Bolivian dignitaries with the exception of the president of Bolivia who was taking matters with his own hands and who knew these lands very well. The region next to the Brazilian border bears his name, Pando.“All who have lived in these lands and learned to know them fell captive to their irresistible charm”, Fawcett writes as part of his reflexions. Is this one of the motives he kept coming back?
