Nature as Event: The Lure of the Possible (Thought in the Act), by Didier Debaise

Review

“The takeaway of Debaise’s careful analysis is a robust and persuasive understanding of the ontology of affect, and affect as valuation–the feeling of the world in its allness and being moved by it according to what is of interest and importance to the societies we are and are becoming.” (M. Gail Hamner affecognitive 2018-01-19)"As Debaise puts it: 'What is needed is a philosophy that, in its very form, its ambition and its manners of relating to things, can grant due importance to the deeply plural experience of nature.' This is the philosophy to which Debaise has opened us in his reading of Whitehead." (Patricia Ticineto Clough Critical Inquiry 2018-04-01)

Review

"Nature as Event is a remarkable rendering of Whitehead's most difficult points of philosophy. With his slow, light, and extremely clever touch, Didier Debaise has a unique ability to make speculative philosophy understandable to everybody, artists as well as social scientists and humanists. One will never find another book that makes the notion of the 'eternal object' commonsensical. A great read." (Bruno Latour, author of An Inquiry into Modes of Existence: An Anthropology of the Moderns)“This remarkable book may serve as an introduction to Whitehead's thought due to its brevity, beautiful clarity, and quality of its argumentation. But it is much more than that: it is a very original and thought-provoking contribution to philosophy and humanities that is motivated by the concerns of our time. Didier Debaise renders the thorniest questions intelligible and characterizes concepts in such a way that readers feel each concept intensifying an aspect of their experience. A deeply rewarding book.” (Isabelle Stengers, author of In Catastrophic Times: Resisting the Coming Barbarism)

During the 80s and 90s, Nature was declared at its death, end, or just troubled by various academics writing from privileged positions. Subsequently, the mashing of nature and culture, or the deconstructions of its alleged dualism, or the monadic collapsing of them turned out to be a growth industry, particularly in the humanities but also elsewhere in academia. As an aside, I wonder how many 'ordinary' everyday people think Nature is dead.......troubled, yes, certainly! Ended? Hmmm! Debaise sees otherwise, particular through his account of bifurcation that interrogates the operative basis and function of dualist and monist conceptions of nature. Why then a 'turn' in 'new' theory to 'non' anthropocentrism, 'non/more-than human' and renewed speculations about ontology, realism, and materialism? What the hell is going on in postmodern 'intellectual' work and associated 'movements' in and of (western) thought?Debaise's very readable, short book is well worth reading as a 'thought' responsive to some of these academic and existential dilemmas, (and others such as the uncritical acceptance in the mainly North American academy of the increasingly populist 'posthuman'), as is his related speculative empiricism (2017). The Debaise text is relatively easy reading and interprets Whitehead in an accessible and interesting manner. His views on nature, as event and plural, warrant attention and debate, as does his account of the subjectivity of feelings as a quality of the intensification of experience...hence his somewhat pragmatic speculative empiricism.More might have been made of Dewey but, with a careful interpretation and helpful pedagogy of the real, the ordinary everyday person on the street would also find "Nature as event' as an al(luring) possibility.

Great book!!!!

Whether you consider yourself a beginner, intermediate, or advanced developer of ADF applications or are new to the subject, this book will be useful to you. After a detailed read, I can firmly state that that Mr. Vesterli has accomplished the promise of the book's title as well as a promise in the Introduction that this survival guide "contains all the information you need to become a competent ADF developer." This book really does combine the contents of all other getting started, intermediate, and advanced books now available on ADF and is therefore a great resource for all levels of ADF developers.I have used and studied ADF since its beginning, and I have to admit that when I started reading the book, I was skeptical of those promises because other authors have not fully realized that goal. However, I found this book to be an extremely complete explanation of all the ADF work needed to create an application. For example, the book covers a subject often set aside for the interest of page count, testing and diagnostics, and even explains the sophisticated Oracle Diagnostics Log Analyzer. The only subject that I couldn't find -- creating an EAR file and deploying to Oracle WebLogic Server -- was probably omitted because deployment is often considered a post-development task assigned to a Server Administrator. Generation of an ADF library JAR is sufficiently explained and that process is similar to generation of an EAR file.Although the discussions seem to focus on ADF Release 12c, most of the material is equally applicable to 11g. The author correctly assumes that most modern application developers can find menu items and development operations in Eclipse or JDeveloper without a step-by-step list of what to click. This is one of the secrets to the book's ability to be "short and sweet."Speaking of short and sweet, this book shines in its brevity (less than 200 pages), which makes the Big Picture of how the pieces of ADF fit together easier to assimilate. Another shining feature is the author's approach to the topic; where other ADF books have taken the approach of explaining features and frameworks and possible options contained in those frameworks, this book is organized around logical parts of the application and tasks you would need to accomplish. For example, instead of describing the FacesContext class in detail, that subject is introduced in a section called "Interacting with the User" because programming user interaction into the application is a task, and by the way, you need to know about FacesContext to complete that task. So the author focuses on the task at hand and explains enough of the technology to accomplish the task, which also leads to an understanding of how that technology could solve other problems. Also, the book contains copious code examples, which can be used as patterns for your own code.In addition, and this is a feature I found unique to this book, the author boldly sprinkles best practices into the discussions with words like "You should always create your own ADF business component base classes..." It's not that this is the only book that contains best practices for ADF; it's more that this book bases its discussions around best practices. The book doesn't offer you all the possible options, it just gives you The Best Way. Without this kind of advice, you can quickly run into trouble or, even worse, experience trouble later in the development process. The best practices in this book do not just represent the opinions of a well-respected, very-knowledgeable expert; they also represent the opinions of the ADF developer community, who over the years has come up with what works and what doesn't. The refined gold that resulted from many years of discovering best practices is contained in this book. In a way, that previous books have not achieved this level of completeness about The Best Way is not all their fault -- they were written while the very best practices for ADF usage were still being discovered. Another way to say this is that the material in this book is the highest evolution of the best way the ADF community has found to understand and develop applications with ADF. This is information you will not find in the Oracle documentation or in any one source anywhere else. That Oracle's development tools focus has recently spun off into JavaScript technologies does not diminish the broad appeal and popularity of ADF; Oracle still uses ADF for its applications as do Oracle's customers. So this book will be useful to many developers. ADF is a highly-refined, extremely-powerful tool and this book makes it easy to understand that power as well as how to best use that power to create solid applications. In summary, I'll close with my best practice: when you want to know more about ADF, buy this book and assimilate its contents.

#50,628 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

For one thing, this 22nd Commissario Guido Brunetti mystery is not a Questura case. It's a story that evolves from Paola Falier Brunetti's concern and curiosity about the death of the boy from the Brunetti family's dry cleaners whom they'd seen there for years, standing in the back room, folding things and always looking so sad. Most customers knew him as "The boy who didn't speak" and assumed he was a relative of the proprietors, and that he was not only deaf but probably also mute. No one seemed to know his name. At Paola's urging, Brunetti starts looking into what had happened and soon finds that the dead boy/man did have a name and a cold and taciturn mother he lived with. Was his death accidental or intentional? And if intentional, was it suicide or murder? No way to tell.Brunetti also finds that nowhere in the public records is there any evidence this boy/man had ever existed. That conundrum piques the interest of some of Brunetti's Questura colleagues. Just as this story is quite a bit different from what we're used to, so too are the supporting roles. Brunetti's sidekick, Vianello, gets involved for awhile, then drops out of the picture. Everyone's favorite computer hacker, Elettra, has relatively little to do here, as does Patta, who thinks Brunetti's still out investigating a case he's already solved. Meanwhile, we get to spend quite a lot of time getting to know Foa and Pucetti a lot better. Then, about halfway through, comes a nice surprise when Commissaria Claudia Griffoni, the only female detective at the Questura, who was introduced five or six books ago and hasn't been seen since, takes over the sidekick role usually played by Vianello. As for the story itself: Unusual, to say the least, absolutely fascinating, populated with some exceedingly odd characters and told in a somewhat more leisurely style than we're used to. And, in the end, the Bad Egg'll get one whale of a comeuppance. Highly recommended for series fans. Probably not the best choice for newbies. Here's a chronological Brunetti book list, as of March 2014: "Death at La Fenice," "Death in a Strange Country" "Dressed for Death," "Death and Judgment," "Acqua Alta," "Quietly in Their Sleep," "A Noble Radiance, " "Fatal Remedies," "Friends in High Places," "A Sea of Troubles," "Willful Behavior," "Uniform Justice," "Doctored Evidence," "Blood from a Stone," "Through a Glass, Darkly" "Suffer the Little Children," "The Girl of His Dreams," "About Face," "A Question of Belief," "Drawing Conclusions," "Beastly Things." "The Golden Egg," and "By Its Cover." (Please note: Should you ever come across "The Anonymous Venetian," "A Venetian Reckoning" or "The Death of Faith" know that these are not new Leons; they're just the British titles of "Dressed for Death," "Death and Judgment" and "Quietly in Their Sleep.")

In Quietly in Their Sleep, Donna Leon’s intrepid Italian policeman, Commissario Guido Brunetti, receives a visit from one of the nuns who has been caring for his aged mother in a nursing home. He knows her as Suor’ Immacolata (Sister Immaculate) though she has shed her habit and appears panicked. She tells a confused story about a cluster of deaths in the nursing home which she found suspicious. Her efforts to question the circumstances of those deaths had been rebuffed by her Mother Superior and her confessor. Their response was to transfer her summarily to another nursing home where her suspicions were heightened. Even though there is no clear case for a police investigation, Brunetti feels compelled to look into the matter because Suor’ Immacolata had treated his mother with loving care and he perceives her as being unfailingly honest. His ensuing inquiry brings him into face-to-face conflict with religious fanatics, powerful officials in the Catholic Church, and, eventually, with his flagrantly incompetent boss, all of whom try to shut him down.Unaccountably, Donna Leon has lived in Venice for a quarter-century — unaccountably, because she has a pronounced habit of taking on one or another ugly aspect of Italian culture in each of the novels in the Commissario Brunetti series. Quietly in Their Sleep spotlights corruption and misuse of power in the Italian Church. Venal prelates, obsequious nuns, religion-obsessed laypeople, and even Opus Dei, a powerful right-wing Catholic secret society, all make appearances in this novel. Unfortunately, though the story is intriguing, the quality of Leon’s writing here is not at the level of the first five novels in the series. (Quietly in Their Sleep is the sixth.) The tale is simplistic and predictable. But I’m not giving up yet on the series. Maybe the seventh will be better.

Are some of the helpless elderly Venetians dying prematurely so the church can benefit financially? The truth is elusive as Commissario Brunetti attempts to uncover the truth, but finds his quest more challenging at eachturn. While following Brunetti's trail, we learn a great deal about several major characters. Each book in this outstanding series deals with different but major aspects of Italian life - finance, immigration, toxic waste, fishing rights, glass-making,tourism, medicine, private education , plastic surgery, horoscopes and through it all, the role the Catholic Churchplays in each life. I read a great deal, and Ms Leonis at the top of my list. Her writing is simply brilliant, and I await each new book with eager anticipation .Start at the beginning and watch each major character grow in depth. Highly recommended!

After reading over a dozen of Donna Leon's novels it's difficult to say which one I loved the best but this one is centered around the Catholic Church and it brought back memories of my childhood in Catholic Quebec so it was difficult to put down...but then almost all her novels are like that...so fun and exciting to read...she is now in my top ten or so favorite authors and that's saying something for me...I read one or two books a week and because I read on Kindle I'm able to stock up on good books; so when I finish one I can go quickly to another favorite...much better than the olden days when finishing a book was dreadful and had to go to bookstores and look for something else to read next...I love that on Amazon I'm abler to review tons of books giving me a description of the contents and a list of comments from previous readers,,,Hey, and Kindle prices for best sellers and great authors is so much less expensive than in the past when I had to pay upwards of $25 per book...Kindles are less than half the price of paper books. and Hey, back to this book, I loved it!

"This book is great couldn't put it down finished it in 48 hours U GOD ALLAH REALLY LIVED HISTRUTH." – Charlamagne Tha God"Mesmerizing." – Raekwon da Chef"U-God has been with Wu-Tang since the start, and this book chronicles the entire saga: rough beginnings in Brooklyn, a vivid project adolescence in Staten Island, and a glorious leap into the insanely talented collective that would become the center of the music universe. There's never been a book that deserved its title more." – Questlove "Unexpectedly moving...Raw feels cathartic, as Hawkins finds the language and perspective to reckon with his past. His moment in the spotlight may be over, but he now has something that few of his Wu-Tang brothers, still so admired by a younger generation, have: the distance to tell his own story. He has often been forgotten, and has sometimes been ridiculed, but he was part of one of the great hip-hop groups of all-time―perhaps the only member who is more man than myth." --Hua Hsu, The New Yorker"A classic rags-to-riches tale, from drug dealing on the streets of New York City during the crack epidemic in the 1980s to fame and fortune. It’s a nostalgic look back on hip-hop music and the wild times in New York City before it became a playground for the rich." –The Washington Post"You cannot tell the story of hip-hop without the Wu-Tang Clan, and you cannot tell the story of the Wu-Tang Clan without U-God.RAW is an insightful, moving, necessary book for anyone with even a passing interest rap." – #1 New York Times bestselling author Shea Serrano"From its blunt opening line--'Time is a motherfucker'--Raw: My Journey Into the Wu Tang is brashly funny." --Brag Magazine"Eye-popping." –The Guardian"Lamont "U-God" Hawkins reflects on his childhood and adolescence―raised by a single mother in the projects in Brownsville, New York―before his life took a major turn when he met his artistic collaborators and soul mates. Hawkins found compatriots in RZA, GZA, Method Man, Raekwon, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Inspectah Deck, Ghostface Killah, and Masta Killa―the eight artists with whom he would found the Wu-Tang Clan, earning a ticket out of the unpredictable and underserved neighborhoods of New York City and into the spotlight as some of hip-hop's greatest performers." --Esquire (Best Non-Fiction of the Year)"An absolute thrill ride and will most definitely please long-time fans of the group as well as give unknowing readers an amazing journey through an incredible life. Raw is full of jaw-dropping anecdotes about what growing up was like in some of the area’s roughest neighborhoods in the 80’s and full of rich life lessons that were won out of pure perseverance." –MetroUS"Propulsive...In this timely memoir, Hawkins’ reflects on his childhood―a period when drugs exacerbated the violence in the streets―and the heady years of fame that followed, revealing a man grateful for the music that saved his life." –Esquire (Selected as a Best of the Year)"A truly gripping book. Hawkins is a gifted observer and storyteller with a quick wit and an effortless freedom with the pen. This is a must-read for anyone with even a basic interest in the look and feel of New York during hip hop’s golden age, and a desire to know how one of the greatest rap crews ever assembled came to be. Unvarnished, honest, detailed, and at times magical, Hawkins weaves an immersive tale from street level to penthouse level without ever compromising his clarity of vision. Wu-Tang Clan Is among the most innately literary projects in all of hip hop history and with Raw U-God holds absolutely true to this vision." – Carvell Wallace, former music critic, MTVnews, and host of the podcast "Closer Than They Appear""The title says it all. Raw is a vivid, sometimes eye-popping and occasionally funny account of street life, drug-dealing and incarceration before and during the early days of one of hip hop’s greatest groups, the Wu-Tang Clan. U-God’sbook sits in a tradition that runs from Booker T. Washington’s Up From Slavery to Charles Mingus’s Beneath the Underdog - accounts of African-American striving and transcendence which remind us what it’s like to live - and survive, and prosper - in a world set up to crush you. As such it’s essential reading - and not just for hip hop fans." – Will Ashon, founder of Big Dada Records"Lamont "U-God" Hawkins has written a memoir that's impossible to put down. The energy in this infectious book is something else--but that should be of no surprise to fans. Storytelling was always a Wu-Tang superpower, but RAW: My Journey Into the Wu-Tang Clan manages to also chronicle a New York of another era. We get everything from street stories to the annals of fame, friendship, family, and brotherhood. It's no wonder he was "the ambassador"--this book can reach so many people, from Wu-Tang diehards to anyone who wants to read about the tough ascension of dreams becoming reality with all the countless twist sand turns along the way." – Porochista Khakpour, author of the memoir Sick and the novels The Last Illusion and Sons & Other Flammable Objects"Hawkins is a wonderful storyteller who spares no detail...and his willingness to share his wisdom in nonsaccharine terms yields an inspirational coming-of-age story." – Publisher’s Weekly (Starred Review) "Gritty...will entertain fans of the group and its era." – Kirkus

I've read quite a few books detailing the careers of hip hop's most well known artists but out of the few that I've read, I must say this is quite a good book. Even better than Prodigy's (RIP) book because it holds a solid base and structure to what U-God is telling. The only problem I have with it is, he tends to repeat himself in two paragraphs but worded differently from one another. This is apparent as you approach the end of the middle part, further on. I don't know if the editors did this to draw the book out longer but it's quite unnecessary and it seems to dumb down his persona a bit.Another issue which I'm not for nor against here is the fact of sharing details of other people when you write a book. I guess it can't be helped but where as Prodigy's book seem to have throw people under the bus in a way or share details about people from his camp that could've been kept out, I see here that there's a sort of honor in all the good and bad that U-God is talking about in his work. It really is about him and everybody else is second to it. He doesn't use any incidents to sell it.But I must say, it's a solid read. Very descriptive beginning and this guy pulls no punches with the details of his life. Forget that he's a member of the world's most famous rap groups of all time. If you like gritty street life no fiction, then read this.

Honestly I always though U-God was the weakest lyricist in the group early on, but I noticed he started to pick it up especially on a lot of the earlier 2000's projects. Now after reading this i know why. Not even he was confident of his early work. After reading this (actually listening to the audio version in his voice) I feel like a know a lot more about one of the lesser known Wu brothers. I also learned a lot about the early years before the Wu and what has led to there weak ass work of recent years. This is a good Book. Know I'm going to give some attention to the U-God solo projects I missed.

Wow. What a journey U-God had. Is still having. His raw, uncompromising stories about growing up were interesting and put you on the streets with him. Loved it.

I saw U-God interview on the breakfast club and knew I had to read this book. Growing up listening and reading articles about the Wu was awesome and this book made everything clear from the rhymes I memorized from repeated listens to the WuTang Clan. U-God was honest about himself which made the book even more authentic as he shared stories about his upbringing and the clan as a whole. Good read with great stories. I think you will enjoy it as well.

I am a really big Wu-Tang fan. I have enjoyed all of the Clans individual albums also. U-God impresses with this book. He is unapologetic in his feelings and opinions. Hope there is a follow up to this one .

Taking us on a ride down memory lane in a first person perspective, U-God shares an era of hip history. It's both nostalgic and enlightening. It's a great read for both old and new generations of fans to the group.

Awesome book. A fun and fast read. I have been listening to Wu for 22-23 years, so this was a have to for me. I'd slept on it far too long, and am just happy to say that I got around to it. Hopefully you do as well.

Easy read. It was a little repetitive but I love the Wu. It is a must for your collection.

Unfortunely I started with a sample of the book thinking, I love time travel, and although she, the main charechter is absolutely brazen about touching precious property that doesn’t belong to her, I figured it was the inexplicable call to the past that made her behave so inappropriately for an adult. However after purchasing the book for $3, I realize what a waste of money. With the first few paragraph of her travel through time, her behavior is so immature I could not stand it. First it’s the same old inexplicable conclusion she arrives to, the thought that she is dreaming (sigh, not original). Her immature and childish responses that has little to do with time travel and more to do with her lack of etiquette truly annoyed me and I didn’t find it funny in the least. Even if she had not traveled in time, who answers that way to another adult. I was not amused but perhaps his book is more appropriate for a younger reader who may like that middle school behavior. Needless to say I stopped within chapter 3.

From the moment I began I fell in love with this book! Usually I am not as big a fan of time travel, but this book really did it for me. The author did such a great job in her characterization, I found myself laughing at many parts and tearing up at others.I loved loved LOVED our main character, Emma. She was spunky and fun and said exactly what she thought. I enjoyed her foray into the Regency era, where she did not quite fit in or know what to do. I loved how she was always true to herself -even after learning all the mannerisms and rules of etiquette, she never truly lost who she was or her quirky mannerisms. The romance between her and Hartley was so adorable. I loved how they quarreled and bantered back and forth. It was a clean romance, but with lots of swoon-worthy moments (my favorite kind). The author made it so easy to fall in love with the many characters in this book, and I ate up the pages in less than two days. I truly hope the author plans to write more books in this era. I have really enjoyed each book she has written!

Romance, clean, some sensuality, so PG-13This was a lighthearted read, didn't take itself too seriously, but still some clever writing. More of a 3.5 for me as a reader, but still a fun read. This was definitely pushing the limits for the time period with Emma's remarks and actions with people who mostly didn't know that she was from the future. It was a clever fall though, and the final ending with her friend and the great (several times over) grandson was very cute and fun way to tie up and work out the bits of the future that were left in the past. Emma and Hartley, their interactions and of course, their lovely, honest, and beautiful fall, were a beautiful romance. Their hesitations, but their obvious attraction for each other, read so well. I love S.W. novels, so this is another good read from a great author. Unique, fun, and clever romance.

I don't know what "Perhaps for a younger reader - middle school behavior" was reading/thinking, but I personally loved this story. After Emma Damon is invited by the Portwood Foundation to interview for a job in London (she gets the job and meets her best friend "Bex") Emma goes back in time to meet, eventually marry and start the Portwood family dynasty of wealthy and kind men who love the women they marry, I couldn't put the book down. There were funny, amusing and hilarious parts of this story and the characters in the family were down to earth, loving and the women were good witches for many generations. Emma teaches the Earl of Hartley to treat his servants as people and in the end when she has their first boy child, she realizes that having the baby gave her and Hartley more love and happily ever after than she thought possible at first. In the end, Bex finds out what happened to Emma when a mysterious box holding Emma's journals and a letter to Bex explained how Emma traveled back in time to become the Countess of Hartley and increase the family's wealth and most importantly, produce the great, great, great (and so on) grandson, Charlie Portwood VIII, the current Earl who will eventually marry Bex as Emma was matchmaking from the past for her best buddy Bex, who had sworn off bad relationships/men. I hope the author has more books in time travel planned.

I never write reviews but I had to write one for this book. Also I usually do not read Time-travel books, other than Outlander but this book was so funny. My husband could not understand why I was laughing so hard reading this book. It is well written and so dang funny I am checking to see if this author has anymore books along this vain. Highly recommend this book, also I love Regency romance books, so bonus with this book.

I haven't gotten teary-eyed in quite some time reading a romance novel but this one did it to me in spite of the silliness of some of our heroine's antics. The characters in this story are well developed and very likable. I enjoyed their humor and sorrows even though you knew how the story would end up there was some room to question the outcome. (hence the tears) Don't get hung up on authenticity and accuracy of the time period, that's not how to read this book. Just sit back, read and be entertained.

Once Upon a Time Travel is a beautifully written story of love and magic that you will never wish to leave. Emma is a smart independent young woman searching for her place in the world and finds it completely turned upside down after accidentally time traveling 200 years in the past. Hartley is a broken and serious man who believes that due to his past he will never find love and avoids it altogether and finds his calm structured world shaken by the outlandish newcomer who he finds fasinating and intriguing. This book has it all: history, romance, self discovery, and magic. I would recommend this to anyone who loves romance, comedy and adventure. This book will have to laughing aweing and wishing for more.

Review

"This is truly luscious, from the cover to the typography and design. You hope for top quality in a book about the most special Ferraris, and it is delivered. Goodfellow has written a smart, readable and informative book about the most exciting road cars from Ferrari. Your time with this book will be time well spent - almost as fun as riding in one." - Sports Car Market"...it contains a narrative that is rich in entertaining anecdotes and quotes. Mercifully for one who finds concept cars a distracting and pointless bore unless they actually have a truly significant impact on a forthcoming "real-life" model, this book sticks very much to the mighty cars that made it into production." - Racer.com / Sports Car Club of America"When it comes to interpreting the subject matter, author Winston Goodfellow is one of the best. And this is far from the usual pretty pictures-and-repeated statistics exercise that these huge paeans so often become. What sets this apart is the author's deep knowledge of ultra-performance Ferraris, and his obvious passion for these terrific cars." - Hemmings Motor News

“Ferrari Hypercars” is the best and most readable Ferrari history in years. Award-winning writer and photographer Winston Goodfellow, knew all the key players, like Sergio Pininfarina, Sergio Scaglietti, and Carlo Felice Bianchi Anderloni, so his book is filled with personal reminiscences from those gentlemen, and other Ferrari luminaries. He talked to Piero Lardi Ferrari, Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, Nicola Materazzi – "the best engineer you’ve never heard of” -- Lorenzo Ramaciotti, and Luigi Chinetti, Jr, to name just a few. This book is replete with insider stories, some told for the first time, behind the creation and development of the fastest, most outrageous Ferraris. Goodfellow is a tireless researcher and it shows. Insightful sidebars document a range of subjects, including “What’s behind the Pininfarina look?;” The curious significance of “Enzo Ferrari’s Hat;” some cogent observations on “The Hyper Dream Cars;” and there’s an intimate conversation with Piero Lardi Ferrari. A fine selection of historic photography is supplemented by Goodfellow’s excellent contemporary work; along with photos from the Ferrari and Pininfarina Archives, and expert lensmen like John Lamm. Goodfellow’s lively writing style and considered expertise on the Ferrari marque provide new information and fresh insights that will intrigue even the most knowledgeable of knowledgeable Ferraristi. It’s a wonderful book. Bravissimo Winston!

The gift recipient was very pleased with the book. It is a beautiful, heavy and photo-laden tome...great for the Ferrari lover.

Great present for my Father!

Great gift

Enjoyed the read

Amazing Book, mine came well wrapped up.

There are lots of books about Ferrari and many are repetitive, offering little in the way of new findings. Winston Goodfellow's books are an exception because he has visited Italy over many years, conducting first-hand interviews with the people who created these cars, many of whom are now deceased. This is certainly true with "Ferrari Hypercars." Winston cuts through the folklore and myths and shares revealing insights into how the ultimate roadgoing Ferraris came about. Beyond just reporting on the technical aspects of the cars, he tells the thinking that went into each car, the battles that were fought in creating them, and the delightful way that Enzo and other notables (such as Gianni Agnelli) ultimately made things happen with the wave of a hand. This book goes back to the early days, covering the Ferrari story over the decades from the fifties to today. It's a great contribution to the study of Ferrari, and very entertaining!

Gorgeous Photography! Ferraris extraordinary works of art and design! Excellent Book!!!

Heart of a Champion: The Dominique Dawes Story (ZonderKidz Biography), by Kim Washburn

From School Library Journal

Gr 4-8-This motivational biography vividly recounts the extraordinary accomplishments of the gymnast and describes the empowering faith that helped her follow her career path. Guided by her personal motto, "D-3: Determination, Dedication, and Desire," Dawes won three Olympic medals and multiple national and world championships. She was the first African American national gymnastics champion and the first black woman of any nationality to win Olympic gold in gymnastics, as a member of the 1996 "Magnificent Seven." During her 18 years of training and competition, she displayed remarkable talent, resilience after mistakes and injuries, and a relentless commitment to perfection. When her gymnastics career ended at age 23, she had to decide what to do with her life. She has found her niche in sports media and as a spokesperson for the President's Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition; Michelle Obama's "Let's Move!" initiative; and recreational opportunities for youth with disabilities. Through personal interviews, periodicals, websites, and photos, Washburn focuses on the principles and religious faith that have guided Dawes's life. Surprisingly little information is provided about her family and the challenges she may have faced as an African American gymnast. This purposeful biography is informative and engaging and carries a clear message about faith-based inspiration and guidance.-Gerry Larson, formerly at Durham School of the Arts, NCα(c) Copyright 2011. Stick it, Stick it real good!In the book Heart of a Champion (The biography of Dominque Dawes) many inspiring things happen. Dominque’s first ever gymnastics class was cancelled. (I thought that was interesting.) She was born in Maryland. The book was about how Dominque became an Olympic gymnast. That’s not only what it was about, the book included the struggles she went through to get there. It also talked about what she does now. She has made a big difference in people’s lives. Dominque is a CEO of the movement of 60 minutes a day of play.In this book some of the main characters are Dominque herself. She is such a sweet young lady! She is a Christian that puts her life in God’s hands. Dominque speaks out loud to kids and teens all around the world. She is a motivator.Kelly (her coach) has been a big influence to her. Coach Kelly has been her coach since she was a little tot! Dominque and her still are great friends today. Dominque actually lived with her for a little while. You will have to read the book to find out why. This book has a great moral or lesson. It taught me to put my WHOLE life in God’s hands. She did and look where it got her. Yes, she did have hard times but, that’s life. She pushed through it and still worshiped the one and only God!I recommend this book to people who like inspiring books. Just about anybody can read this and enjoy it. It’s more than a biography it’s a great book. Get your copy today!

This was a gift. The reciient was happy to get it but I never heard how they liked it...

Great story

This review is difficult as I love Dominique Dawes and definitely consider her to be one of the greatest gymnasts of all time. She is an amazing athlete, and she deserved a better biography than this one. It's written for young readers, so the simplistic phrasing and prose is to be expected. However, there were several continuity errors and inaccuracies about the sport of gymnastics. A few examples: late in the book the author explains why Dominique chose to stay at the University of Maryland - except she never told the reader that she went there in the first place. She only mentioned that Dominique decided not to go to Stanford, but was glad she was still going to school (which was incredibly confusing). She refers to 1996 teammate Amanda Borden once and only says "Amanda said..." and never tells the reader who Amanda was or why she was important. The author also talks about the "3-up, 3-count" scoring formula of the team finals when talking about competitions in the early 1990s - that format was not in place at that time. She also mentions that currently, each year, still only 7 gymnasts make the Olympic team. It's actually 5 (and was 5 when the book was written), though it will be going to 4 at the next Olympics. I really wanted to enjoy this book, but the numerous inaccuracies and the random mentions of people and places without any context or explanation were really frustrating, and would be confusing for young readers.

I have watched Dominique in gymnastics every since 1991. This is a great book highlighting all her success in the gym and out the gym. I have always wondered how her parents thought about her gymnastics. Reading the book I found out.

inspiring book for young person

I recommend this book to kids and adults. It is very inspiring for everyone, gymnast or not. It tells about more than just her gymnastics career, like her life afterwards too.

Book is for our granddaughter. Another story of a girl who made good! It isn't easy to find good biographies for kids.
