About the Author

After flying fifty-three combat missions in World War II, ART SHAY joined Life magazine as a staff reporter. He went on to become one of America’s leading photojournalists. His pictures regularly appeared in Time, Fortune, the Saturday Evening Post, Forbes, Business Week, Parade and the New York Times Magazine. Shay immortalized some of America’s most compelling 20th century figures, including John F. Kennedy Jr. and Muhammad Ali, along with street scenes of Chicago’s dispossessed. I actually had the privilege of meeting Florence Shay, and I know her husband Art for 38 years now. So I may be a biased reviewer, however I loved the book. It was so full of love and respect for this amazing woman. Art Shay has photographed world events, numerous racquetball tournaments (which is how we met), traveled the world, published books, had big shows, all kinds of fame and glory. But this little book is so sweet and intimate. I was really touched and will treasure it.

I loved it! What a wonderful love story! I had been waiting for it to come out! I am very happy with the little book!

My Florence is a very personal story of Florence Shay, a "companionable, sexy, Jewish mother, elegant and always up to date, who blogged to 30,000 followers until her last days, the literary adviser to basketball players, governors, and rock stars, the loving, devoted wife; and resolute proponent of the written word." What makes the book unique is that Shay is an ordinary wife living an ordinary life around California and Chicago, 1940s to 2012. Her husband Art, whose resume includes a stint as Life magazine's youngest bureau chief and a career as a highly respected photojournalist, tells her story in images. Photographs of a life well-lived up until her death in 2012.At a slim 96 pages, I often wished for even more photographs than were presented. It is clear throughout what made photographer Art Shay an icon at Life Magazine - his images are the every day, the mundane, the everyday life. For photographers and photojournalists know, it is not about what's in the image, it's about the apogee of the moment at which the photographer clicks the shutter. Here, Shay beautifully captured the moments in wife Florence's life - her family, her pursuits, the memories they were making as they raised 5 children and then went on to grandchildren. The cover image is the first he ever photographed of the person who would be his life's companion.Cultural historians will no doubt appreciate the glimpses of mid century life in Chicago. From a brick row type home in Des Plaines, whose interior features ball clocks and slim legged tables. But also tidbits of life after World War II through to the turbulent 1970s. The images move from black and white to kodachrome color as Florence ages. Celebrity appearances in images by Eleanor Roosevelt, Studs Terkel, and Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins seem almost to disrupt the home glimpses - I kept wishing for even more glimpses of the ordinary life rather than the celebrity one.The Shays' may have lived a better life than many due to his work with Life (vacations in Hawaii in the 1970s, the Hacienda in Las Vegas in the 1960s) to have this be a book of the populist style. As well, there are interesting tidbits of the eras - images of briefcase and purse hidden cameras when Florence caught pictures of mobsters, for example. Or staged images of his family for Life articles. They create a bigger pictures of the Shays' life but I found them less interesting than the candid home images.I rate this four out of five stars because I honestly wanted more. There is some commentary but it is sparse and not every picture has commentary. Since a photojournalist is all about the moment, I loved the book the most when it was describing those moments and what prompted Shay to click the shutter when he did. There just wasn't enough of it.The images are somewhat chronological but do jump around quite a bit. Decades may pass in the blink of an eye, for example, and no matter how many images presented, it did feel like there are so many more that will never be seen that could have gone into this book.In all, a very personal story in which the life of a remarkable woman shines through brightly.Reviewed from an ARC.

The EU and its accompanying Euro took one step toward a unified Europe very much as the United States accomplished several hundred years earlier, but the real issue has remained unchanged - that each individual is subject to the laws of their place of residence.But what if their residence is online? Wouldn't that individual be a citizen of the world? And aren't we that way in so many ways these days anyway? Visiting France or Australia is as easy, albeit more time consuming, as visiting Kansas might be for a New Yorker. The Internet knows no borders - unless, that is, countries attempt to impose their sovereignty upon it through fragmentation. And it is here that we enter the doctoral thesis of Mueller's text. Expansive in ideas while concise in prose, the overall text serves as an introduction to the concepts behind where the internet might go in the coming decade, and whether it will pull the world along with it, or whether those who would get in its way to protect what they see as their own domain might end up ruining things for the rest of us.I am reminded of George Carlin's joke about there being those who lead, those who follow, and those who obstruct. Mueller's text focuses on those who might obstruct what would otherwise be the inevitable progression of the internet's knocking down the barriers which have for so many generations separated world citizens from one another. At the same time, of course, there is recognition as to the speed with which the Internet has led to disharmony and disagreements. Perhaps the open communication will lead to tragic consequences, something that national governments probably fear the most.Overall, this is a high level overview, meant for those who already understand the background of ICANN, IPv4 vs IPv6, and so forth. But the text isn't impenetrable even for those of us who don't work in the IT industry. I found it most interesting.

Professor Mueller is a technology professor and co-director of the Internet Governance Project. This scholarly book is useful for policymakers and others who may be concerned about keeping the Internet open for the collective benefit of all.Professor Mueller discusses what is meant by ‘fragmentation’ in order to differentiate technical versus governance issues. The illusion of fragmentation is merely due to the exponential growth of the Internet and how individuals have learned to use it. The more exacting term, according to professor Mueller, is ‘alignment’ or the attempt by various nation states to control the Internet from the top-down. The author is hopeful that the powerful, bottom-up network effects of the Internet will push back against those who try to assert sovereignty over the Internet community – whether this force comes from government in the China, U.S., E.U. or elsewhere.For its thought-provoking discussion of a timely and important issue, I highly recommend Professor Muller’s academic yet compelling book to everyone.

Thought provoking book that I have held off reviewing for quite a while after not being sure exactly what to say. There are easy responses, "well, I've traveled to China and their Internet is completely (or nearly completely) different" or "Russia! Hacking! Elections! Guccifer! Wikileaks" or "the threat of the end of net neutrality." All of those topics tie to the fragmentation, or possible fragmentation, but here the focus is on issues directly related to national sovereignty. After all, the Internet is very different than even the trans-national companies which have so bedeviled notions of nation state identity.This book got me thinking, slightly tangentially (as good books can do!), about the limits of both hard and soft power online, and how power and prestige online can coexist with (for lack of a better term on my part) the real world's equivalents. Lots of questions to think about here.

This is an intensely interesting question that has been popping up with regular frequency over the last few years but somehow, doesn't seem to get any serious attention. The author breaks that trend by tackling the question on everyone's mind in a clear, concise and yet comprehensive manner. The book starts with defining the problem - what is fragmentation - and what it isn't. I frames the question(s) and concerns around four basic assumptions and then presents a compelling if not somewhat biased 'solution'. While the reader may or may not agree with the primary assumptions or the suggested solutions, the author gets an A+ for providing both in a meaningful and realistic manner. So, why not a full five stars? First, the book could have been twice as long as still just as compelling if not more so. Next, within the first 30 pages, I was already exhausted by the over-use of the word "balkanized"...yes, it's an apt description but the tendency to over-use certain words detracted from the pleasure of reading this well thought out book. Overall very worthy, thought provoking and well organized.

This is essentially a placeholder review.I began reading this, and told my Intellectual Property Law colleague about it. Said colleague borrowed the book, reported that it was both interesting and helpful--especially for IP lawyers like my colleague who are engaged in a lot of head-scratching about how Brexit will and won't change things in the UK--and confirmed my view that some editing/word choice change would have helped). Said colleague promised to get the book quickly read and returned.....

As a Linux administrator, I ordered this book hoping to find out how hackers typically gain access to systems and neat little tricks for locking down my system, as well as detecting and dealing with intruders. While Practical Unix & Internet Security did cover these topics, it covered little I didn't already know.Significant time is spent explaining how unix-based systems work. The book covers things such as file systems, partition structure, file ownership/permissions, users and groups, inodes, ssh, backups, etc. Each command, utility, procedure or feature is detailed over several pages followed by an explanation of what you should be doing with said topic.There are also a few real-world examples here and there; stories most of us have heard before, like the admin who had . in his path.Unlike many computer books, this one is well written and an easy read, and it's certainly a lot more friendly than some unix geek's advice which consists of RTFM.I think this book would be great for someone who has a very basic understanding of unix-based systems but has never administrated one before, but for those of us who've already had some experience running unix there's probably not anything new here for you.

Good review book of things I have known for a long time. But, it should be geared more toward large enterprise security tools like BoKS, PowerBroker, TripWire, etc.

I should have paid more attention when I bought this book in a series of security books and I regret this buy. Its "best seller" position is IMO unjustified because the networking/internet sections (10 total lines on SSL!, mentions of Netscape 2.0b2, nothing on ICMPs attacks, 3 lines about spoofing...) are completly outdated and/or pretty useless.

Excellent and comprehensive coverage of the topic. Easy to understand.

I'm pretty sure this book has been "de facto" for all security professionals, It is contains all basics stuff related unix wold.

This book may be very useful for people who have a strong working knowledge of Unix or Linux. I would recommend learning one of these operating systems before purchasing the book because it's practically unintelligible without that base of knowledge.I bought it for a class and stopped reading it after the third week of school because I was getting nothing out of it. One can learn security concepts without learning Unix.I recommend this book only if you have a good background in Unix or Linux. Otherwise, it will likely end up a paperweight.

I appreciate the subject matter and the book is beautifully illustrated. The box is a little deceiving since you belive the book would actually be bigger. The content is fantastic but I agree with another review in which the font size is rather small and difficult to read. The bonus Scarab is of no interest to me. I would have prefered the book to be bigger, larger font and hard cover at the same time I can not complain of the price which was great.

The Ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead I purchase was exactly how imagined. The only problem was that the Scarab was missing. It was really a bummer and the reason I give this review 4 stars. Overall the book is lovely.

It was classified as a hardcover. It's not. Very disappointed.And the scarab is a nice, but unnecessary touch. I'd love to find a hardcover version.

So this is more about the marketing and packaging of this book. The book itself seems to be an okay book, but is much smaller than the box it comes disguised in. I would have never bought it separately as the print is too small for me to enjoy reading. We bought it because in so many museums we had seen it in the kids section, near the egyptology book, and it is packaged just like them. We write the review not to criticize the book itself, but the marketing and packaging, and to save anyone else from thinking it is what is is trying to look like but is not.

I outgrew this book by the end of my first afternoon dyeing. The author tried to cover so many techniques that there is only cursory knowledge of each available in a pretty package. I'm not thrilled about the patterns that ate up pages that could have had a lot more technical stuff about dyeing. I have plenty of knitting and crochet patterns, what I wanted was more matter with less art. I learned more from surfing YouTube for an hour.

I bought this when I decided I wanted to start dying my own yarn at home. This book gave excellent instruction on exactly what supplies would be needed, as well as covering several different techniques. I have tried a few of them now with great success. I LOVE that this book is spiral bound so it can lay flat when I'm using it in the middle of a dye session. Strangly enough, I usually find note sections added to books to be pointless and this is the one instance that I wish a notes section had been added so I could write down formulas as I was dying. I just keep a small pad of papper in the very back for that purpose.

When I got near the end of the book and saw the pattern for kangaroo mittens, it finally clicked - this woman must be The Kangaroo Dyer!! I've bought a lot of yarn from Webs and love the variegated yarn dyed by "The Kangaroo Dyer" <3When the author listed Valley Yarns, Kristen Hipsky (whose patterns I have bought) and Kathy and Steve Elkins in her Acknowledgements, I realized what a treasure I had in my hands to assist me in beginning my yarn-dyeing journey :)

This is my first dyeing book, though I’ve read a fair amount on the Internet. This book is full of information and tips for dyeing yarn. I’ve done a couple of the techniques—mini skeins and ombré dyeing in a pot, and they’ve worked great. There are tips on acid dyes and on food-safe dyes. I only use food safe dyes at the moment (food coloring and Kool-Aid), but I’ve gotten some great results. I am looking forward to trying more experiments!I also really appreciate the lay-flat spiral binding. This is such a great feature for consulting the book without worrying about it closing while your hands are occupied dyeing.I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in dyeing yarn or fiber.

I have almost every book on spinning, weaving and dyeing that's out there and thought this sounded good to add to my library. Little did I know that it would become my all-time FAVORITE book on dyeing!! I started reading it one morning then had to stop to do other things, but it was so good I went back to it in the evening and didn't put it down until I finished it near midnight!It is very well written, clear, easy to understand and "friendly". You almost feel as if you are there experiencing the dyeing process right along with the author. There are many terrific tips to make dyeing easier and pleasing. The photographs are outstanding and her method of teaching about color with her ingenious color grid and grains of rice is fantastic! Much easier to use/understand than the common color wheel. Not to mention, with the book you get the terrific color grid to use from then on.Another positive thing about the book is its binding. It is a spiral-bound hardback with the spiral wired spine underneath the outside hardback spine. This allows you to open it flat to use when working and also keeps the book from getting caught on things as exposed spiral-bound books often do. There are eight interesting knitting projects (spanning various levels of experience) with directions and a full color picture of the finished item.I have been dyeing fiber for a couple years now, yet still found several of the things she mentioned to be new and helpful. I have been dyeing yarn and fiber for a few years and have many books about dyeing. I just received this book and was VERY surprised! It have become my favorite dyeing book. The book has excellent step-by-step directions for many methods of dyeing. The photography is great. There is a small section on color theory that is excellent. The spiral binding allows the book to be open flat allowing you to refer to the directions as you are dyeing. I have never reviewed a book before, but had to make a review for this one. If you can only buy one book about dyeing, buy this book!

I love this book. It has nelped me a great deal in learning out to dye the fiber I get off my goats, as well as the yarn I spin, or the fiber I use in my needlefelting projects. It has step by step directions on dyeing fiber in several different ways to get certain effects. It is well written. The instructions are easy to understand and follow. It is illustrated with photos of the techniques and the results.I love the spiral binding which makes really easy to read hands free and not have to worry about losing your page as you work. I have made some beautiful yarns and rovings with the techniques in this book. If you're new to hand dyeing, I wholeheartedly recommend this book.

This is a good book and explains how to sample color dyes on yarn or other fibers. Then it also explains how to dye yarn with multiple colors and get something that looks great and not like mud. Hand dyed multiple color yarns look complicated until you go through this book. I need a free weekend to try some of these projects.
