Crazy me I took on teaching physics to 12 year olds in my homeschool coop. While I am fascinated by the subject, I really have no formal background to draw on. This book helped save my butt! ( this and YouTube :) Experiments are the way to go with kids and this is great book for easy and inexpensive. It delivers on what it says.

Love it! Easy to follow and great to do with the kids. This guy knows his physics and follows Einstein's idea that if you can't explain it simply you don't really know it! Even I can explain to my kids how these physics concepts work now!

Husband and I enjoyed the projects and I have incorporated some I to my middle school science class lessons.

My wife and I went through this book as part of our small group Bible study. A lot of interesting information to review; however, one challenge my wife and I both had was the complex nature of much of the material. As much as they try to relate it for someone without a PhD in the field being discussed, it is still pretty intense. Plus, to try to remember these topics to discuss with someone questioning creation is going to be hard for me as well. Of course with any stance on such a debated subject, there is plenty of responses to the book pointing out many flaws and issues from the perspective of an evolutionist and/or atheist.For me the book was challenging as in my opinion, if this is the complexity that I have to go into to try and prove intelligent design to a non-believer, it will personally be very hard for me to lead someone the right direction. With every point made by the author, there is a response easily found online from some other scientist or study that would argue otherwise. And unfortunately, I do not have the expertise nor the ability to prove any evidence true or false.Also the book is definitely oriented to discussions with scientists and other highly educated people who already believe in intelligent design. This is not shocking as the author himself came from the perspective of an evolutionist and wanted to hear the case of the intelligent design side of the debate. In such case, you would focus your research and experts in that field. However, sometimes some statements made by the interviewed were taken with such acceptance without much review or debate. It would be interesting to see a book like this where the author has a discussion with scientists on the side of evolution, allowing them to state their case, and a discussion can be made regarding each item.

Well written and thorough. Of course, some backward evolutionists, still clinging desperately to an obsolete 19th Century theory, will try to write off the facts presented here from mathematics, cosmology, microbiology, and paleontology as "ID propaganda". But those folks are pursuing a materialist agenda rather than seeking the scientific and metaphysical truth.

Many people believe that faith and scientific knowledge occupy two different categories of thought. The author of this book interviews some of the leading Christian scientists and shows that the bulk of scientific evidence points strongly in the direction of an intelligent Creator. I highly recommend it to anyone who is not a believer but is willing to open-mindedly look at the scientific data, but also to the believer who is already committed to his or her faith, but is interested in the topic.

This book delves into life's hardest and most challenging questions. If you decide to read this book, you should be ready to face the possibility that life has meaning beyond the physical realm. If you are content with your atheistic or agnostic life then I encourage you to put your worldview to the test by reading an reflecting on this book. The Case for a Creator is more scientific and compelling than mainstream science has led everyone to believe. Be prepare to face facts that undermine the arguments for atheism and agnosticism. Having faith is easy when facts back up your argument but acting on that faith takes everything you can possible give. Jesus gave His all for all of humanity and now it's our turn to give back to Him by studying and reflecting on the proof of creation that surrounds us.God bless.

I found this book well written and and excellent source of reference for further study. Strobel has a talent for interviewing scientist that are highly respected in their fields and asking the correct questions to weave the entire book into an interesting tapestry. A book that easily could have been a dry, boring, read is actually so interesting it is difficult to put down. I found myself reading and rereading it the first week I had it. I will keep it handy as a reference book.

So well written with proof like you never heard. You will definitely be shocked at how brainwashed the science community is from just a few atheist theories. All of the theories have been proven to be FALSE and done in manipulating ways to get the answer the atheist scientist wanted. I highly recommend this book and A Case for Christ and A Case for Faith.

Fabulous book. It was my "main thing" until finished it. A friend, a nuclear engineer, is reading it now and has the same obsession. Strobel does what a journalist is meant to do, which is to seek out authoritative people to translates their technical theories and facts from their jargon into captivating language we can all comprehend. In this book he has located world-class authorities for each of his topics and lets them answer questions from his probing superb mind. Wow! I need to get that book back and read it again!

The author makes compelling arguments for a creator and intelligent design pushing back on the many misconceptions taught in our school text books and the constant chorus of the materialists. This book will give you a solid and understandable basis for believing that all creation speaks of the glory of an infinitely wise God.

The audible version of Hidden Figures (showing the images of celebrities Taraji P. Henson,Janelle Monae, Octavia Spencer) caught my attention after I saw it featured online on a website that I was on. I decided to take a chance on it to broaden my mind. I am glad to have taken a chance on the audio despite the not so cheap price. One reason; the narrator shares one of the stories where one of the women admitted to have grown up in Hampton Virginia around successful role models who worked an accomplished living in field of education andor the federal government (NASA, National Advisory for Air Committee, mention of the Langley base in Virginia andor the sciences etc.) . This positively shaped her worldview on what was possible. Many of the women who applied at Langley were mentioned to come from accomplished employment backgrounds in education as well as having mathematical talents. There was mentioned that Langley employed multiple women in the field of computers. One of the women, Dorothy Vaughan is mentioned to have worked as a math teacher in Farmville, Virginia. Dorothy Vaughan’s in- laws were considered part of the financial upper-class in the area and mentioned to own a barbershop, a pool hall, and a service station. Their (Vaughan’s in-laws) activities made headlines at times through such media as what was mentioned in the audible version the Norfolk Journal and Guide. My preference is the book mostly because of the additional information provided about Aunt Katherine. The movie is done very well and I commend all those involved in its production including the talented stars. It is a case of getting one slice of pie when you could get two slices. I saw the movie before I read the book, and I am honestly not sure whether that was a good or bad thing. I loved the movie, and I loved the book, but they are very different.Generally, the book is a very fast-paced and interesting read about the black women who worked at the Langley Air Force Base in Hampton, Virginia, and their many and varied contributions to the field of aeronautical and astronautical research. It is part biography, part history of NASA, part history of segregation, part history of the civil rights movement, part history of the Virginia peninsula, and part history of women's rights. It is absolutely fascinating.That being said, the book is very different from the movie, so don't go into it expecting them to be the same. The movie is deeply touching, but it is actually fairly inaccurate, and it has been pretty aggressively whitewashed (see re: the Kevin Costner character). I think it is good to both see the movie and read the book, because one of the critical differences, and the difference that I think is missed entirely by the movie (to its great detriment) is the way in which issues of segregation were actually tackled at Langley. The movie makes it appear that enlightened white men of power were responsible for Langley's integration, when in fact the integration of Langley was almost entirely borne organically and of necessity. The book does a good job of explaining this, whereas that aspect of the movie is almost entirely fictionalized. I thought the movie took away some of the women's victories in this area (Katherine Johnson, for example, never went to the "colored" bathroom. She just used the regular, unlabeled bathroom, and no one ever told her not to), but the book gives the women more credit for their small yet trailblazing acts of defiance.One other note: the book actually covers quite a bit of complex scientific detail, but it is entirely readable to the layperson.I highly, highly recommend this book.

You would want to put a copy of The Oxford Book of English Verse and Horace’s Odes in your rucksack for company, of course, and you would want your parents to give you one pound a week for spending money, that would be more than enough.And that is what these three amazing books are about. Fermor is an unusually keen observer, and his vivaciousness and immensely likeable personality combine with his brilliant observational power to create this compelling personal odyssey. The first volume carries Fermor from the Hook of Holland through fascist Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia; the second takes him through Hungary and Transylvania; and the third winds through Rumania and Bulgaria and ends up with him being deposited in Greece, where the hair-raising wartime adventures he later became famous for were to occur. He sleeps rough in the country sometimes, sometimes in the fantastic castles of middle Europe, sometimes in barns with bucolic peasants. But everywhere he is observing, and writing everything down compulsively in battered notebooks.The detailed notebooks from this amazing journey became the wellspring of the three beloved classics, but how this voyage became the three books is a great story in itself. His first notebook was stolen and lost forever in Munich in the first volume, a minor disaster. But then a major disaster happened in the third volume: his rucksack was stolen in Rustchuk, a Bulgarian town on the Danube, and ten months of notes were lost. Miraculously, however, the rucksack and the notes were recovered and they were ultimately put away for safe-keeping during the war at Harrod’s where they were later destroyed, unclaimed. And that was the end of the notebooks. Then life intervened: World War II and a brilliant literary career that carried Fermor into the first rank of English writers of the 20th Century.Then, late in a long and well-lived life, the accomplished author returned to his memories, without the benefit of contemporary notes, to see if he could make something of his unaided recollections. The books themselves were written when the wandering boy had become an old man, a great writer at the height of his powers. The first volume came out in 1977 when I was at Oxford, but somehow I completely missed them until now, to my great loss. The second volume appeared in 1986. Both attracted universal critical acclaim, and the world waited patiently for the concluding volume. But Fermor died in 2011 with the trilogy incomplete. In 2013, it was finished and lightly edited by Colin Thubron and Artemis Cooper and, although the third volume is not quite as brilliant as the first two, it is extremely well done and eminently readable. It beautifully completes this remarkable saga.Undertaking this journey today would be most unwise. To do it in 1933 at the age of 18 seems positively insane. What Fermor saw is now a completely vanished world, of course. Imagine walking across Europe at that young age and in that time, walking across Germany just as the Nazi terror was coming to power, strolling observantly through a wonderful world that was about to vanish forever, in flame and death. The elderly author sees sensitively through the eyes of the young traveler, and the reader is keenly aware of having the benefit of both perspectives. The young Fermor observes the charming folk traditions of the gypsies of Bulgaria, and the reader knows they will all surely be liquidated in the coming fascist occupation. There is a bitterly poignant air that hangs over this trilogy -- of aching beauty, doom and death, love and loss, an irrepressible zest for living overshadowed by the reader’s knowledge of what was about to befall these beautiful countries and these lovely people.I am enchanted by the reveries he invokes and how in these books you can hear both voices, see both points of view, read the one writer enthusing about a wonderful experience while understanding it is being told by another writer who knows all of that world vanished forever in an evil conflagration. So you get both points of view, one feelingly perceived by an adventurous boy and the other well crafted by a gifted older man, both writing about a beautiful and bucolic world the boy perceived and from the perspective of the older man who knew it was a doomed world. Enthralling.

The whole trilogy is excellent reading and stimulated my wife's interest in a recent trip along the same path, albeit with trains, buses and cars rather than his shoe leather express. In one paragraph, he can encompass a thousand years of tribal movements in Hungary and Austria leaving the reader informed, entertained and breathless. His description of Munich beer hall patrons and their gluttony is very funny. His experiences sharing shelter and meals with shepherds, loggers, intellects and nobles illuminate the narrative, as he describes the physical landscape and the simultaneous stability and changeability of old Mittel-Europa two generations after the unification of German states and twenty years after the death and dissolution of the Austrian Empire. He set out on his adventures as Hitler became chancellor, a few years before full fruition of the deluded, evil, incestuous coupling of people and politicians with their fascist and bolshevik states. We especially enjoyed his frequent historical references to Imperial Roman activity in the region.

I feel bad giving this book two stars since the content, and talent and intellectual gifts of the writer are exceptional. When Fermor takes a break from one of his too often and mammoth literary, art, historical, architectural tangents and shares his unique experiences with the reader, the book is lovely. I wish there was a version of this book that left out his hard-to-follow verbal wanderings and focused instead on his charming stories. Normally I would enjoy learning all about the new history and literature he places before me but he is an awful teacher. Fermor likes to launch into detailed and highly educated references with little to no background. If you happen to be educated in all the things Fermor is, then you’ll probably be happy with this book. I am going to try to make my way through the second book as I have heard that the third book is far more readable (two other writers completed it after his death).

This is a wonderful book of many layers, a reflection in late middle age about a walking tour the author took as a young man. The prose is rich and gorgeous, the descriptions evocative, and the stories amusing and often enlightening. Eve though Leigh Fermor begins by explaining that he was thrown out of several schools before giving up on formal education, he had an impressive command of history, art, geography, classical literature and the English language.I particularly liked the descriptions of ordinary Europeans and their concerns in the years before Hitler was elected. Leigh Femor later became a war hero, and in looking back he manages to convey simultaneously the innocence of his own youth and a strong sense of what was already brewing.My only disappointment was that the tale ends without warning. Fortunately, there are two more parts.

About the Author

After flying fifty-three combat missions in World War II, ART SHAY joined Life magazine as a staff reporter. He went on to become one of America’s leading photojournalists. His pictures regularly appeared in Time, Fortune, the Saturday Evening Post, Forbes, Business Week, Parade and the New York Times Magazine. Shay immortalized some of America’s most compelling 20th century figures, including John F. Kennedy Jr. and Muhammad Ali, along with street scenes of Chicago’s dispossessed. Several of these photographs have been noted as among the most enduring American pictures ever taken. Shay lives in Chicago.

I actually had the privilege of meeting Florence Shay, and I know her husband Art for 38 years now. So I may be a biased reviewer, however I loved the book. It was so full of love and respect for this amazing woman. Art Shay has photographed world events, numerous racquetball tournaments (which is how we met), traveled the world, published books, had big shows, all kinds of fame and glory. But this little book is so sweet and intimate. I was really touched and will treasure it.

I loved it! What a wonderful love story! I had been waiting for it to come out! I am very happy with the little book!

My Florence is a very personal story of Florence Shay, a "companionable, sexy, Jewish mother, elegant and always up to date, who blogged to 30,000 followers until her last days, the literary adviser to basketball players, governors, and rock stars, the loving, devoted wife; and resolute proponent of the written word." What makes the book unique is that Shay is an ordinary wife living an ordinary life around California and Chicago, 1940s to 2012. Her husband Art, whose resume includes a stint as Life magazine's youngest bureau chief and a career as a highly respected photojournalist, tells her story in images. Photographs of a life well-lived up until her death in 2012.At a slim 96 pages, I often wished for even more photographs than were presented. It is clear throughout what made photographer Art Shay an icon at Life Magazine - his images are the every day, the mundane, the everyday life. For photographers and photojournalists know, it is not about what's in the image, it's about the apogee of the moment at which the photographer clicks the shutter. Here, Shay beautifully captured the moments in wife Florence's life - her family, her pursuits, the memories they were making as they raised 5 children and then went on to grandchildren. The cover image is the first he ever photographed of the person who would be his life's companion.Cultural historians will no doubt appreciate the glimpses of mid century life in Chicago. From a brick row type home in Des Plaines, whose interior features ball clocks and slim legged tables. But also tidbits of life after World War II through to the turbulent 1970s. The images move from black and white to kodachrome color as Florence ages. Celebrity appearances in images by Eleanor Roosevelt, Studs Terkel, and Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins seem almost to disrupt the home glimpses - I kept wishing for even more glimpses of the ordinary life rather than the celebrity one.The Shays' may have lived a better life than many due to his work with Life (vacations in Hawaii in the 1970s, the Hacienda in Las Vegas in the 1960s) to have this be a book of the populist style. As well, there are interesting tidbits of the eras - images of briefcase and purse hidden cameras when Florence caught pictures of mobsters, for example. Or staged images of his family for Life articles. They create a bigger pictures of the Shays' life but I found them less interesting than the candid home images.I rate this four out of five stars because I honestly wanted more. There is some commentary but it is sparse and not every picture has commentary. Since a photojournalist is all about the moment, I loved the book the most when it was describing those moments and what prompted Shay to click the shutter when he did. There just wasn't enough of it.The images are somewhat chronological but do jump around quite a bit. Decades may pass in the blink of an eye, for example, and no matter how many images presented, it did feel like there are so many more that will never be seen that could have gone into this book.In all, a very personal story in which the life of a remarkable woman shines through brightly.Reviewed from an ARC.
