An incredibly well-written and detailed book. The author delves into the 5 subjects' days at the Naval Academy in great detail, and explains how their experiences there and in Vietnam paved the way for the Iran-Contra scandal, in which 3 of them were the major players. All of the rigor and discipline, along with the blood and sweat of Vietnam, is chronicled. Timberg takes the reader on a journey, at the end of which we realize just how these experiences shaped the the future of the country as a whole: Iran-Contra, John McCain's political career. The public service and writing career of James Webb was also born in this crucible. Men who attended Annapolis, and then served during Vietnam became disenfranchised with the country, as they felt America had kicked them to the curb. Ronald Reagan came along, and let them know that their service mattered. Out of gratitude, three of them pledged their total obedience, and paid the price.

I thought I knew this history but I learned a lot more from this excellent book. I even had the pleasure of briefly meeting McFarland and Webb at Marine Corps events. I served as a Marine officer just a couple of years after them. I confess to enjoying watching LTC North run circles intellectually around members of Congress at the Iran Contra hearings. This fine book goes into greater depth than I was aware of at the time and permits a more sophisticated examination of the events and the motivations of the officers involved. I can see the other side of North now.The author avoids black and white portraits and reveals the principals' multifaceted personalities. Their paths sometimes seem predetermined and other times, as in the case of John McCain, they rise to the occasion and perform heroically. I felt his comments about Ollie North appeared too harsh and judgmental but after all they are based on impressive research. I also wonder about the negative angle on President Reagan. When he was President, his detractors got all tangled up in different attacks, seeing him alternately as an evil genius one day and an amiable dunce another day. I suppose the author's characterization of Reagan as "disengaged" in the details rings true.

As I mentioned in my recent review of Timberg's memoir "Blue-Eyed Boy", it was fascination with his life and perspective expressed therein that prompted me to read his previous rather phenomenal discussion of the Iran-Contra Affair in the light of circumstances surrounding the Vietnam War. I selected the newly-released Kindle edition because I am trying to avoid adding "paper" to my already over-crowded shelves.Since "The Nightingale's Song" was originally published nearly 20 years ago at the height of the events of Iran-Contra (and well before subsequent events in terms of 9/11 and the ensuing wars in Afghanistan and Iraq), it now classifies as "history", not current events. I have to admit that I was in a way disappointed that in Timberg's memoir he did NOT reflect on the ongoing impact of the "ripples" from Vietnam as they might conceivably relate to these more recent events, and indeed, given that the Kindle edition of "The Nightingale's Song" is indeed a post-Iraq/Afghanistan update, I admit I'd rather hoped Timberg might add an afterword of some sort.That said, I believe that this new release of what is indeed a classic reflection on some of the pivotal events of the last quarter of the 20th Century is timely and relevant. I am glad I had the opportunity to read it, and I believe that anyone who, like me, had NOT read it at the time of first publication should definitely consider doing so. I also strongly recommend reading it, as I did, in light of the memoir which gives the author's perspective. This former book is pure investigative journalism of high caliber but contains nothing personal about Timberg himself.Finally, a comment on the Kindle format. That is somewhat disappointing in many ways. The electronic rendering is rather annoying in that many words are run together or separated without hyphenation. There are significant typos, and - perhaps most annoying of all for the serious student, this mode does not allow easy access to notes or cross-referencing of names, dates and so on. I believe that such a serious student (which admittedly I am not) might be better served by going back to the original 1995 edition.

One of the best books I have ever read. Take a look at this author's other books, especially his own story.

Awesome in all respects, a truly engrossing tale. Separate stories intensely inter woven to a dramatic ending. So much new history revealed. This book really opened my eyes. I give it 5 stars!

Book 1 - Practically unreadable. Grammar terrible, shifts from 1st to 3rd person in the middle of a sentence, misspellings galore.Book 2 - Self grandiose about how much he did, what high ranking officers he new, etc. It was always ! and me. Notes boat captains by names and places of birth, nothing about the enlisted crews.Book 3 - The best part. 1st person account of the Seawolf's first year at sea, how the subs were used in the first year of WW2, how the crew came together, the trials and tribulations Best part of the book.

A must read for the WWII reader. No maps or photos to make it more real. Hard to put down.

Awesome book to add to my collection.

Love this book! I have to confess I ordered it for myself (69 year old woman) because I've always loved to watch the squirrels in my yard. The photos are great, and I'm so impressed by the time and effort the author put into this book! I read it to my class of 4 year old preschoolers today and they really enjoyed it too. I'm sure my grandchildren will like it just as much.

I am smitten with this book! I purchased it for my 6 year old because he is getting ready to have surgery and I wanted to lift his spirits. We laughed at every page. The fact real squirrels were used to make this is AWESOME. The pictures are spectacular. The book is beyond hilarious. We especially laughed at the squirrel owning and using a washing machine. I'm 33 and thoroughly enjoyed this book, and my 6 year old son laughed just as hard. The book is pretty long too, which is great:) I hope Nancy Rose continues to make more squirrel books :)

If you have a young child they will absolutely love this book. I have read this to my daughter for the last year over and over and over and each time she delights in pointing out the little things that the squirrels are doing. This author has a very unique approach to how she writes books. The storylines are very stupid however the photography is nothing short of mind-boggling. She sets of these miniature scenes and basically waits for wild squirrels to come over and do what appears one would do in that scene. For instance the cover of the book appears that the squirrel is mailing a letter. Very cute book from a very talented author. Definitely get it if you're tired of reading Dr. Seuss over and over and over

I purchased the book as a gift for my 2 year old granddaughter and she loves it! Though the writing is a bit too advanced for her to fully comprehend, I describe the scenes to her and point out different things in each picture. She is excited whenever she sees a squirrel, and enjoys seeing the squirrels in make believe scenes. The miniature sets designed by the author are highly detailed and very cute.

The photos are hilarious! This book is a perfect gift for your friends who battle the squirrels who damage their yards and empty their bird feeders. It's a losing battle, and this book at least gives you some humor about the situation. Nancy Rose is a (patient) genius!

This hardback book is adorable and features pictures of real squirrels in many scenes. A little bio in the book tells how the author began photographing squirrels. She has much more patience than I do, I'll tell you that! Just to get that perfect shot! We love squirrels in our family and got this book for a gift as squirrel stuff always makes us laugh. The story it tells is simple, but it's the pictures that make this book so funny!

Me preschool science class of four year olds loved this book! We read it during our squirrel lesson, and they understood that this is fiction and not real. We all marveled at the author's ability to catch squirrels in just the right pose! Loved this so much that we had to get the Christmas version, too.

Nancy Rose is my new hero! I want to be just like her when I grow up. Her photos are adorable. If you or someone you know loves squirrels, this book is a great gift. She also has a Christmas book and one about love that would be perfect as a Valentine's gift. I read this to a classroom of first graders, and they loved it.

I originally only read this book because I had to for a college course I am taking. I usually don't like to be "assigned" books to read but WOW - this was an amazing read. I had my doubts because I had never heard of the book before and there isn't much information about it/reviews for it online. Aside from the story itself being incredibly gripping and suspenseful, I enjoyed how it was written. Though confusing at first, Ms. Castro jumps back and forth between past and present events to tell her story in a way that ends up making the most sense in the end and it allows the reader to really reflect on her past and how it has shaped who she has become. Without giving away to much detail, her story is gut-wrenching at times so if you are easily triggered by stories of abuse (verbal, physical, sexual, etc.), suicide, eating disorders, etc. perhaps this book is not for you.

Joy Castro weaves a mesmerizing tale of a childhood fraught with abuse and dysfunction. Yet she does so with a creative structure, beginning at a point where we know she has survived before she delves into the muck of a mother not protecting her children from a menacing step-father and a well-meaning father who falls short in providing for them.. Castro's is a brave narrator, revealing the devices she used to protect herself while growing up and as well as acknowledging her inability to protect her younger brother. Many current memoirs appear exploitative, playing with the readers' emotions. This writer's direct and fierce narrative is more powerful by under-stating childhood environments that would have devastated less resilient souls. Read The Truth Book to better understand how to craft a heart-rending story.

I read this book some time ago, but it's a book that has stayed with me. Not only is the story honest, gripping, and important, but the prose is beautiful.

This book was in my opinion a great read, I enjoyed it. It was sad and inspiering. It isn't about Jeh. witnesses,as a whole, it was how her family lived as jeh.witnesses and the strugles her and her brother overcame. It is about hope and love.

We expect to be strong and active at least into our 80s. Unless we get hit by a truck.

This book changed my life. I read it about 5 years ago. I was a 52 year old overweight couch potato who had been inactive most of my life. Needless to say, I had never been athletic either. In my fifties I believed the popular misconception that you get older and your body falls apart. Turns out that's a symptom, not a cause. Long story short--I'm able to run a half marathon now and before I read the book I had never even run around the block. I lost 40 pounds, too! Younger Next Year is my fitness Bible. Eye opening and life changing!

I was the person that continually gained and lost the same 10 to 15 pounds over my entire adult life. That is until at age 50, I started lifting heavy weights. Within weeks, I was literally shrinking. I only lost around 10-12#'s but dropped 3 pants sizes. doing nothing but lifting weights. Since then I've done no cardio other than summertime cycling. I eat healthy and feel great and I thought I was "good-to-go". Until I read what this book has to say about the need for BOTH weights AND cardio to maintain health as we grow older. The chapters rotate between physician and patient perspective. It's totally changed my thought process regarding the importance of cardio. Extremely informative and very entertaining writing. I highly recommend you read and follow the advice in this book.

How could I begin to actually DO the ideas in Chris and Henry's inspiring book, Younger Next Year? Being new to the world of exercise and fitness myself, and wanting a program that would integrate the latest understandings of fitness this book if PERFECT. And when you go to do these exercises... before you know them all, download the two consolidated cheat sheets they offer at the Workman site: Warm ups and 25 sacred exercises are available at no cost at Workman.com. I reduced them to 66% on the copier so I don't have so many pages. Much easier than trying to hold the whole book open and carry it around with me.

I'm a huge fan of Younger Next Year. I've been doing the basic program for six years and it has really changed me for the better. Be warned that this book is mainly repackaged leftovers. If you have read the original, most of the first part will be review. The main message of the exercise program is good, but the "sacred 25" are apparently covered in Thinner Next Year (which I have not read). I also think the exercises seem to be a bit overwhelming. I doubt you could do the "warm ups" in less than 30 minutes, and the whole point of YNY is 45 minutes to 60 minutes of exercise six days a week. The book recommends to mix and match the exercises, and has a few suggested programs. Overall, however, I expected more guidance and a more manageable program. It almost seems like the purpose of the book is to lead to the purchase of the exercise DVD. Not a big deal because the book is cheap. So, overall, good effort. But, I would really have preferred an updated new edition of YNY that includes TNY and a more structured chapter on the exercises. Also, more involvement by Harry. Harry is featured a little here, but it seems largely repackaged.

GREAT BOOK! I loved the original book better though. He got softer when he was speaking directly to women. But honestly I prefer his humor and straight talk. I recommend this book very often. It's a great resource for the latest research on longevity and how to avoid all the modern diseases of inflammation crippling the unhealthy lifestyle of the western world. And it's written with humor and in a way that even the most non health say person could understand. Highly motivating! And bottom line message - You and You alone are RESPONSIBLE for having health or non-health based on the choices you make in everyday life.No Doctor, drug, surgery/procedure can save you from your own choices. Why not choose health and health for a long life. Its about what you put in your mouth, how often you move your body, building health relationships and being connected to something more real that ones' ego. Wonderful book!!!

An utter waste of time. I'm truly glad I only paid a buck and a half for this. There's not one original idea in the book. There's only one brain among the two authors: Henry S. Lodge, M.D. who at least presents his material in a professional, intelligent manner. However, the same can't be said for the co-author, Chris Crowley who takes information that has been written in a thousand other self-improvement books and tries to make it "cute" by loading his contributions with massive amounts of profanity. I read 10-15 health books a year and I've never seen one curse word in any of them, yet this one has dozens. Not to mention the entire book is based on a false premise of evolution and an earth that is "millions" of years old. I'd return it if I had spent more than a few pennies on it. This one isn't worth sharing with anyone and is going in the trash.

Yes, I agree with everything the book says. But... it's a simple concept (exercise vigorously, daily, forever) and it is repetitive and gets to be a bit annoying. Also, half of the book is a motivational speech, and the other half is a medical explanation of the body. If you want to skip the book, just exercise HARD and get your heart rate up, six days a week, for an hour a day, for the rest of your life. But if you need a little motivation to do so, then by all means, read this book. It will motivate you.

Thereafter each chapter deals with distinct and very interesting FAQ type issues. They can be dipped into for insight in each subject's turn, as and when required.I read the greater part of the book on Kindle, then bought it on Audible, and listened to the rest in the car while travelling between cities. The Audible version is a bit repetitive, as the concept of summarising quoted (in-bedded) forum entries is beyond the intellect of the Audible producer. But that aside, the content of the work is superb.Get it now. Highly recommended.

This is a well put-together book that includes the writing of Satoshi Nakamoto in forums and online communities before he disappeared from the public eye. There are some parts of it that are redundant, where the author used the same material twice. It might have been to make a different point or it could have been an oversight. Either way, that's a minor annoyance compared to the volumes of value inside. The content of the messages is incredible.Not only do you get a look at the mind of Satoshi, but you see him interact with people who are either unfamiliar with cryptographic technology or are new to the idea of electronic money as well as some of the early pioneers of bitcoin, including Hal Finney who received the first bitcoin transaction from Satoshi himself.This is a very valuable book for anyone interested in cryptocurrencies.

I got this book more out of curiosity than actually needing to get it. The thing is, after reading this book - I got more out of this little book than I have gotten out of more than a dozen other books on Blockchain, Bitcoin and Cryptocurrency.In short, this is a phenomenal little book and if you can - get the audio version too... The reading is spectacular and has a wonderfully pleasant female reader's voice. Very, very good purchase and I highly recommend getting both the book and the audio version.

Great collection of writings. Sure, they are available for free on the Internet, but I actually read them this time because they were easily accessible in this book. I have been a moderate-to-advanced Bitcoin enthusiast since 2013 and I found I was still learning new things in this book. Very good read if Bitcoin is your interest.

Before reading this I thought it was either: a) a hagiography of Satoshi, b) a load of public domain content slapped in a hastily self-published book with the idea of making a quick buck, c) both. Of course it does mainly contain public domain writings about bitcoin but the author has added significant value by sorting through them and adding his own editorial comment and introductory paragraphs.I had a few minor quibbles with the intro but anyone reading this book wouldn't use it as an intro to bitcoin. It gives a fascintating and surprisingly readable background to the genesis of bitcoin, spread over 70 or so short chapters. For me the fact that things are discussed in a to and fro correspondence between Satoshi and others really helped to form a picture of the development of the system and gave enough time for things to sink in as I read.Buying this book was a highly price-sensitive decision for me, knowing that this is mostly free content, but I think the author priced the paperback at exactly the right level (~15 bucks in Dec '14), hence it's well worth five stars. Quality of print and layout is very good for a self-published book (I assume that's what it is anyway).What else would I have wanted? Larger glossary and more links to insightful papers about particular aspects raised in the book - there were some but I think the author might have gone a little further. Minor points though - great book that spans technology/culture/contemporary history.

I find reviews most useful when I have an idea of where the reviewer is coming from, so here goes. I’ve been traveling all over the worldmostly solo, since the early 1990s, and first began using the Lonely Planet series in 1991. Since the steep deterioration in quality in LP in the last 5 or 10 years, my preferred guides have been Rough Guides or, if available, Blue Guides. That should give you an idea of my traveling style. I had heard good things about this book, so I decided to give it a try, and I used this book for an eight-day solo trip to Vancouver in July 2014. I find Amazon sometimes tends to lump reviews of different editions of a book together, so I want to make it clear that this review is only for the 2014 6th edition of the book. Warning, this is a very long review!Overall: For those of you who mourn the days of the old Lonely Planets, full of useful info and great maps and actual content, as opposed to the watered-down stuff they’re putting out these days, I am happily here to tell you that this one is kind of a throwback to the old days. Well done Mr. Lee!Hotels. I was using hotel frequent-stay points for my trip, so my choice of hotel was constrained, and I didn’t use this section at all.Restaurants. Wo! For about 75-80% of my meals on this trip, I used Lee’s recommendations, and this was the best I’ve ever eaten on any trip, ever (including Paris :-). I was mainly eating in the low-budget end of things for two reasons. First, I was traveling alone, and I don’t enjoy lengthy “fine dining” when I’m by myself. Second, I love street food and ethnic “everyday” food, and Lee made it clear there were great choices in this category. He was right. I went outside my usual comfort zone and ate things I would normally never eat. Every place he recommended, I had an outstanding meal. (One of the best meals I had on the entire trip was from the Railway Express food truck.) Important note: if Lee says that a certain restaurant is busy, hard to get into, etc., at a certain time of day - he’s right! Go at a different time if you don’t want to wait.Transport. A nice clear subway map is included, along with some of the bus routes you’re mostly likely to take (though by no means all of them). The directions for getting from the airport to downtown using public transportation were spot-on. In July 2014, Vancouver had not yet converted to the Compass system, so this area will change quite a bit as soon as that happens. Bus directions were generally good.Neighborhoods/maps. Vancouver doesn’t really have a lot of “sights” - it’s mainly an outdoorsy city, great for walking and hiking and exploration of neighborhoods. I did quite a few of Lee’s recommended walks, and loved the various neighborhoods that he recommended. There aren’t really things to “see” in neighborhoods such as Kitsilano, Main Street, etc. - just shops and restaurants and cafes, and in some cases, interesting houses - but it’s fun to explore, and he included the nice detailed block-level maps that used to be standard in LPs but have all but disappeared from them these days. The tear-out map was good as well, but really only covered the core city. Some of the maps were a little tricky to use as you had to flip back and forth between different maps, the legend and the map, etc. - I’d recommend putting legends on the same page as the map they’re for.Sights. That said, there are a few sights, and Lee makes sure you know what they are and (for the most part) how to get to them. Where he became suddenly and uncharacteristically kind of vague was on how to get to the Museum of Anthropology. Here is how. Take a Canada Line train to City Hall/Broadway. Get on a 99B bus (express bus) at the corner of Cambie and Broadway. DO NOT get on a 9 bus (local) or it will take you all day (it’s slow enough with the 99B). The 99B and the 9 buses both stop in the same general area but NOT necessarily at the same place. Check the signs to make sure you have the right stop; they are clearly labeled. Take the 99B west to the end of the line, which is at a bus parking/staging area near the northeast corner of campus (“UBC Bus Loop”). Either get on a campus shuttle there, or, start walking, bearing generally to the northwest. There are maps posted all over campus - keep checking them if you don’t have a good sense of direction. (I walked west down Student Union Blvd (south of the North Parkade), then bore north on East Mall, west on Crescent Road, north through the UBC Rose Garden (lovely! look for the flagpole with the Canadian flag on it), and down a bunch of steps to Marine Drive - museum is just to your left from there.) Eventually you will hit a busy perimeter road (Marine Drive) along the north side of campus. The MOA is on the north side of this road. It’s about a 15-minute walk from the bus parking area. Lee’s descriptions of the sights are good, and I found the practical info on the sights (such as opening/closing hours) to be excellent.Style. Ah yes, the days when LP had style! Lee has a quite distinctive style, and you may love it, or not. He has some favorite words, and you’ll be reading them again and again, and again. If any of the following list annoys you, you might want to select a different guidebook: Cool, fave, ‘hood, hipsters, indie, “cheap and cheerful”, perfect, scene, smashing, and... especially, “locals”. “Local” or “locals” shows up on just about every page, sometimes more than once. Typical phrases: “...neighborhood spot that’s close to the heart of in-the-know locals who flock here...”, and, “This legendary locals’ fave is the best place in town to...” and “...this smashing little store is a must for artsy, indie types...” and “....is beloved of local coolsters”... and “local hipsters have claimed this as their own....”. If you love this kind of writing, or if you fancy yourself a cool indie hipster, you’ll love Lee’s style. If you had a hard time making it through the above examples... you might want to reconsider your purchase!In summary I loved my stay in Vancouver, and I have to give a lot of credit to this book. One of the most recent LPs I bought (Iran) was so awful that I gave it away while I was still in the country, and many others I never bought in the first place. This one, I’m keeping.

For a recent trip to Vancouver, I bought two guides, this Lonely Planet guide, and a Fodor's guide. The Fodor's guide was dry as dust and while you get your standard history, and lists of places to stay and eat. It really doesn't motivate you to want to visit there. The Lonely Planet guide on the other hand really brings the city to life with lots of things to do and see, yes you also get the history and the lists of hotels and places to eat, but this Lonely Planet guide makes Vancouver a place you really want to see! Skip the Fodor's buy this one!

OK, I admit it. I'm a United Statesian, and Vancouver is the only city I've ever visited that has made me feel, literally, jealous. How can a city, only 20 miles over the border, be such a paradise? How can such a paradise have sprouted in only 100 years? How can such an city have the most nearly perfect blend of authenticity, diversity, urban sophistication, geography and culture? Well, this excellent guidebook answers those questions.Vancouver gets rave reviews from travelers the world over, and there's good reason for this. The city is an absolute modern playground. This is an excellent, comprehensive guidebook that introduces the traveler to the incredible diversity of attractions that this city offers. About the only thing you can't find much of in Vancouver is European history, but this is a city that revels in and celebrates its youth. The baggage of time is simply not a factor here. Vancouver is about the beauty of the present and promise of the future, and it is utterly oppossed to the monotony of mass production.This book is typical Lonely Planet quality. Since there are 300 pages here dedicated to just one city, you get remarkable depth that is not typical of an encyclopedic travel guide. The listings are surprisingly complete, and each major neighborhood in Vancouver gets its own chapter. The chapters are arranged around the listings for each neighborhood, but they are introduced by brief essays which give the reader an historical and cultural flavor for the area. The layout is all very conventional, which means it's familiar and easy to use.The writing style of the author is particularly engaging and witty. This is no "just the facts" book. That can be a plus or a minus depending on what you like, but the reviews are definitely subjective.There are brief chapters for excursions to Whistler and Victoria, both of which are worth your time if you have extra.Up in the Pacific Northwest for a cruise to Alaska? Live south of the border in Seattle or Portland? Want to see the best of what North America has to offer? Vancouver is worth a journey. Take this guidebook with you.

This was better than not having a guide book. Mostly good info but lacking on design and illustrations. I prefer DK books over this company.

It helped us out during our trip to Vancouver, but did not use it as much as I though we would. These guides are more helpful when travelling to less developed parts of the world or travelling to countries that speak another language than what one speaks.

Not quite as easy to use as I would like but lots of good information

Very thorough book about Vancouver. Just the right size and very well laid out.
