Starting from how engineers are interviewed, actual hands-on work (due to processes that overemphasizes "do" over "think, e.g., daily stand-ups require you to say what concrete thing you did yesterday), evaluation of work ("move fast and break things") to over-emphasizing on downstream "fixes" (prod-ops culture, 24*7 firefighting heroism) - the top echelon of technology gravitated towards things that it can see, feel, measure. What often gets neglected in this "code be all" culture is deep understanding of fundamental concepts, and how most newer "innovations" are indeed built on a handful time-honored principles.Nowhere else perhaps is this more prominent than in data space that up-levels libraries and frameworks as the conversation starter. That gets in the way of success. It is indeed impossible to model Cassandra "tables" without understanding - at least - quorum, compaction, log-merge data structure. Due to the way the present day solutions are built ("fits one use case perfectly well"), if these solutions are not implemented well to the particular domain, failure is just a release away.Mr Kleppmann does a great job of articulating the "systems" aspects of data engineering. He starts from a functional 4 lines code to build a database to the way how one can interpret and implement concurrency, serializability, isolation and linearizability (the latter for distributed systems). His book also has over 800 pointers to state of the art research as well as some of the computer science's classic papers. The book slows down its pace on the chapter on Distributed System and on the final one. A good editor could have trimmed about 120 pages and still retain most value one could get from the book.That said, if you ever worked on data systems, especially across paradigms (IMS -> RDBMS -> NoSQL -> Map-Reduce -> Spark -> Streaming -> Polyglot), this book is pretty much only resource out there to tie the "loose ends" and paint a coherent narrative. I'm only 3 chapters into this book and I think it deserves a 5 star already.If you are interested in distributed systems or scalability, this book is a must-read for you. It gives you a high level understanding of different technology, including the idea behind it, the pros and cons, and the problem it is trying to solve. A great book for practitioners who want to learn all the essential concepts quickly.I didn't come from a traditional CS background, but I did have some basic knowledge in hardware and data structure. You will need some of that, such as hard disk vs SSD and AVL tree, to understand the materials. If you are completely new to backend or DS, you may want to start with another book "Web Scalability for Startup Engineers." After that book, you can read the free article "Distributed Systems for Fun and Profit" and you are good to go for this amazing book :D

DDIA is easily one of the best tech books of 2017 (possibly this decade) and is destined to become a classic. The book deals with all the stuff that happens around data engineering : storage, models, structures, access patterns, encoding, replication, partitioning, distributed systems, batch & stream processing and the future of data systems (don't expect ML because it is a different beast).Kleppman has coherently blended the relevant computer science theory with modern use cases and applications. The focus is primarily on the core principles and thought-processes that one must apply when it comes to building data services. Design concepts don't go out-of-date soon, so the book has very long shelf-life.The high-point of this book is the author's lucid prose, which indicates mastery of the subject matter and clarity of thought. Conceptualizing reality is an art and the author really shines here. You’ll find that whenever you have a question after reading a particular sentence, the answer to that will be found in the upcoming sentences. It’s like mind-reading.Also kudos to the author for those nice diagrams and interesting maps (and for avoiding mathematical formulas with Greek symbols). The bibliography at the end of each chapter is thorough enough for unending personal research.If you are working on or interviewing for big data engineering, systems design, cloud consulting or devops/SRE, then this book is a keeper for a long-long time.

*Happy and contented sigh*This book was such a fun and delightful read. I was super exhausted when I started it and went on vacation for the holiday weekend that it took me a little bit to get into. I really wanted to read but when I finally had a moment, I'd read one paragraph and find myself falling quickly asleep. So after slowly getting a handful of pages into the book, I finally got some sleep and rest, and tah-dah, read and finished the book. I've heard lots of good things about this series and after reading this author's other series I finally came and started this one. The last book, #5, is sitting in my pile of review books so I really didn't want to start at the end, although I have heard it works as a stand alone. So I found a moment in between review books and dove right in(well after getting some sleep).I honestly was highlighting like crazy. I love that I can highlight on my kindle and color code it. The funny quotes, the more thoughtful quotes and most definitely the sweet and swoony quotes. When I was looking back over my highlights there was a good mix of all the colors. And I have to say lots of funny moments in this book. Oh the whole play on words, you know when in America a phrase or word means on thing but in England(or any other country) it means a whole different thing. I was dying over one passage talking about a character having health issues and after a day of traveling and activities everyone was discussing her being over done with exhaustion. Ok, I didn't say the phrase used so you'll have to go find it yourself. Ha! I was very tempted to include it in my quotes but didn't want to spoil the hilarity of that moment. It was pretty funny. And 'Alter Emme' cracked me up at that scene.Alter Emme is super funny and I loved her little asides...who is Alter Emme? She is merely Emme's subconscious or mental thoughts and added lots of fun to the story. Instead of too much of my thoughts for a review on this book I decided to share several quotes with you that I loved. Not all of the quotes that I highlighted, but a handful. There were too many to share and all of them were great.Emme and James...sigh. Just great! Loved them lots! I loved the setting and the secondary characters as well. At least the main secondary characters. There were a few I felt I could take em or leave. I'm sure you'll know who and why and feel the same way when/if you read this one., although I reserve the right to change my mind the further I get into this series if I'll continue to feel the same about those characters. The jury's still out.Nichole Van can definitely create an amazing and enjoyable story with wonderful prose and complex characters. I can't wait to dive into the next book in the series. Watch out for the swoony moments, the snorting/giggling moments and the moments of contented bliss."There are moments in life that sear into the soul. Brief glimpses of some larger force. When so many threads collapse into one.""Mr. Knight laughed, an enigmatic expression on his face. He gave her a long, measured look. 'I assure you, madam, I would most certainly remember if we had met before." Emme blinked. Indeed.""He was utterly shameless. You mean utterly magnificent, right? Alter Emme sighed. Emme forced herself not to agree.""Not mine! Not mine! He would pull his thoughts back and try to find that mental box again, to shut her away.""'And zombies,' James deadpanned. 'Her ninja skills are also useful against zombies.' And, really, that did it. Any part of Emme that had not been in love with James thoroughly collapsed in that instant. She was his. Utterly and completely. The moment was beyond perfect. The most perfect of all her perfect memories.""'I warned you,' he whispered, low and rumbly in his divine aristocratic accent. 'You are the one and only thing I cannot live without. I would follow you to the ends of eternity, my love.'""'I'm sorry to have alarmed you. Though, I must admit, it was remarkably funny. Does Emme know you scream like a girl when startled?' Marc threw back his head and laughed."Content: Clean. Some kisses and a couple, more intense, kissing scenes but nothing further. A few scenes talking about where Emme comes from(she looses her memory after being transported back in time) and implied that she is a courtesan, also one character propositions her, nothing graphic or crude. A handful of mild swear words throughout.Happy Reading!!!

I love a good romance! But what I love even more is a romance I don't feel like I need to read in my closet for fear one of my children will pick it up and be appalled at it's content. This fast moving novel offers all the heart pumping romance without any of the smut. The story line is intriguing and smart whilst also being peppered with fun, quick whited dialogue, a winning combination. This book was a one sitting read for me over a long weekend. Sure my kids were slightly neglected but it was worth it! Do yourself a favor and get lost in time this weekend with this fun read!

I am 43% into this book and the eye rolling is intense. Alter Emme is just stupid. When you have thoughts, it is NOT your alter self...if it is, just keep that part to yourself! The entire first quarter of this book was backstory. The info dump was real! I can't tell you how many pages I have skipped so far, but I have a feeling I'll be skipping many more just to get to the end.Spoiler Alert: This lady spends her life looking for information on a man that lived in the Regency period, and now that she is there she conveniently has amnesia. She doesn't want to get close to the hero because of the picture of HIM in the locket with initials that don't match his name. THE PICTURE IS OF HIM!

Pretty good! Solid 3.5 stars, but I do have a couple complaints.It was pretty cheesy. The reason for the mixup with his initial was downright lame haha.And *SPOILER*, if we're getting into the concept of modern medicine on a time traveler from the past, it really bugged me to ignore all the mutated viruses and pathogens that their bodies wouldn't know what to do with. I've always heard that time travel from the past wouldn't work just because they'd likely die from our modern sicknesses--which I'm willing to suspend disbelief on, if medicine isn't part of the story, but it was!And it got on my nerves that, while Emme had amnesia, the narrator kept using her name. Having to read so many variations of 'Emme didn't remember her name' kind of took me out of her head and forced some reader/character separation, which made it harder to feel what was happening to her.*End spoiler*I struggled to connect to the characters in general.Anyway, the plot was really good! Active and clever--and you know it's good writing when you don't realize something is foreshadowing until right before/at the foreshadowed event. I love that!It was worth the time to read, and I already have one of the sequels from when it was free, so I think I'll read more of this series.

...since I've enjoyed a FREE Indie read this much!Despite the intermittent type-o and a few questionable words/phrases for the time period (which the author apologizes for at the end), AND the fact that bits of the story felt long-winded, I am still giving this a glowing review because of the 'enjoyable read' aspect of the story itself.3rd Person Omniscient is probably my favorite style of writing, and Ms. Van did a wonderful job of vacillating between it and 3rd P, sucking me into the story, and helping me to see and understand the two leads, whom I adored thoroughly.A clean and believable love story that took its time simmering to near boiling w/out gratuitous bedroom scenes (which I would have skimmed over had they been inserted).DO take the time to read her disclaimer at the END of the novel, where she begs forgiveness for a few of the things other reviewers slammed her for doing: like creating Jane Austen novels a year prior to their actual release and her attempt at inserting a few modern words/phrases for 'easier comprehension', although that part seems inexcusable to me. If a reader can't comprehend antiquated speech, that is her problem, not ours.I can't wait to read the other three novels in this series and only hope they are slightly less scene-by-scene as this first. It was a long read but well-worth the effort to finish.You'll fall in love with James, I just know it.

Kenta Shinohara started his manga career as an assistant to the legendary creator Hideaki Sorachi of Gin Tama. Astra Lost in Space has the makings of a grand space adventure. The story simply could be summed up as follows. In the year 2063 group of 9 kids, ranging from a young child to a few young adults, end up being stranded 5,012 light years from Earth. Lucky they do find a abandoned space ship that works. Although there may be a traitor in their midst that doesn't want them to make it back in one piece.The artwork is very clean for a first installment of a series. Some of the alien landscapes are especially memorable, along with some unique animal designs. But there is a few things that help him stand out from the crowd. One is his ability to remain calm in a tense situation. As for the rest of the cast there is still so much to learn about them, but they don't seem to overlap each other in their personalities.Overall it's a strong start and there is quite a bit of volumes still to come. I am looking forward to see how the cast develops over time. Astra Lost in Space is already an interesting universe. I can't wait to see how the series grows from here.

Astra Lost in Space reminds me of The Martian. Well, The Martian + some kids just going on a road trip. Note that road trips generally involve a car, some money, and planning. The road trip in Kenta Shinohara’s newest manga is not as elaborate, though there’s a reason for that.Serialized in Japan’s Shounen Jump Plus, Shinohara follows up Sket Dance with a title that might be better. This manga is being localized by Marlene First (Editor of Haikyu!, Seraph of The End), Annaliese Christman (Letterer of My Monster Secret, World Trigger) and Adrienne Beck (Food Wars, Ancient Magus Bride). They are working on a title that involves a group of nine young kids taking a trip to Planet MCPA, where they would be on their own for five days without adult supervision. After getting dropped off there however, an orb sucked them straight into space. After finding a ship, they learn they’re nowhere near home — they’re over 5,000 light years away. Now they have to figure out a way to get back before dying in space.Easily the weakest aspect of this manga is the comedy. Shinohara was an assistant to Hideaki Sorachi, who created Gintama. Unfortunately, I felt, and this is based on the anime, Sket Dance lacked the comedic timing or good jokes. In reading Astra Lost in Space and his manga for the first time, I have to say it’s not great. The timing is either unnecessary or the dialogue just plain sucks. There are characters that contribute heavily to the standard comedy routines, and it doesn’t always work. If Astra Lost in Space wanted to be a flat-out comedy than this would be an avoidable title.But everything else about this manga is fantastic. The characters shine at almost every point. You have the female lead in Aries, who is cute and can remember things once but is very ditzy; Kanata, a motivated dude with the shounen style heart and the shounen style brain (is dumb); Zack, super smart, super oblivious; and a host of other characters that would take me a while to explain that manage to work with each other awkwardly. That’s a good thing for this manga.So what happens when you toss these different personalities into a situation like this? Well, you create a story of adventure and friendship. In this case, they are now extremely distant from their home planet. And while you know they’re not going to give up, actually providing reasons why not to give up — for example, Kanata was part of a similar situation as a kid — works well. Explaining how they can “hop” back towards their home, as Aries explained it, is drawn really well, and I found it a nice touch. The motivations are good, and propelled by an unfamiliar situation, the personalities stand out.Then it comes down to the survival aspects, where they have to find things to eat and ways to sustain themselves. That is shown off very well, like discovering something new in an unfamiliar place, and that sense of wonder and awe. It’s not easy to capture it, but Shinohara does so extremely well. That’s why turning the page to find out what happens next is exciting.What also excites me is what’s the truth behind the nine being sent off into space. It later is established that someone might have intentionally trashed the communications portion of the ship. Who could it be? Why would they do it? The possibilities are there for the story to go where it wants. It can turn into a space exploration trip or a mystery that will change how things proceed from here.But the biggest thing is that it’s fun. No, it didn’t make me smile in laughter, but it made me smile because there’s a sense of passion and adventure that’s not always shown off well in manga. Astra Lost in Space executes that part to a tee, and I’m definitely looking forward to reading more of this when the next volume comes out.- Justin

I had hopes for Astra Lost in Space, based on the premise, about a class trip set in the future with space travel. When an accident occurs, the group of students has to figure out how to survive and get back home. It’s a classic setup with lots of promise for character development and exciting adventures.Unfortunately, what I got was so based on stereotypes and caricatures that I had a hard time finishing it. This might be the kind of manga that’s better read in chapter installments instead of big chunks, or picked up when the reader wants some light entertainment without thinking too much.The first student we meet, Aries, is cute, outgoing, and scatter-brained, the kind of girl that exists for other people to take care of. Within the first four pages, she’s almost forgotten her passport for her trip, spilled her suitcase in front of a kindly older alumni, and had her bag stolen so a guy could rescue it for her.She’s on her way to planet camp, where a group of students are taken to another planet and dropped off for a five-day camping trip. However, with this group, a mysterious sphere transports them into deep space. Thankfully, they find an abandoned ship and start solving various problems, like figuring out where they are and how to leapfrog their way home.The characters all appear in familiar manga style, with Aries in particular looking too young for her stated age. The boys wear popped-collar jackets while the girls are in mini-dresses. (It’s like school inspired by classic Star Trek.) The spacescapes, however, are artistically impressive, as is the sequence where the kids are swallowed up by the plot gimmick.The book is best when the students are foraging on another planet, allowing for imaginative creatures. I also liked the bits of survival information, obviously extrapolated from Earth camping. Conveniently, someone always has a bit of knowledge or a special skill whenever it’s needed.There’s lots of running around and silliness, mixed with flashbacks to make everyone more sympathetic. The captain kid is trying to make up for a similar (but planet-bound) camping trip that went wrong, so he continues to flash back to life lessons. Aries is just happy she has friends, regardless of the danger they’re in. The rich girl is secretly lonely.Kids who haven’t previously seen stories and characters like this before will likely enjoy the space adventures, since plenty happens quickly, but anyone older will likely find it too familiar (and with the traditional gender division, somewhat off-putting, as seen in the brokeback pose on the cover). For instance, the chapter on the different levels of intellectual stimulation (from the most brain-protecting to least) is exceptionally valuable, and i will try to live accordingly.

It is very seldom that I read a book and then decide to start a second reading of it. This book is so good I felt the need to read it twice, to better absorb the information. Of course, having read the description of the maturation stages of the brain, I knew that I would need that second reading to hope to retain as much as a 16 year old would on a first reading.Dr. Victoroff gives you current information on a vital subject. This book was published in July of 2002 and it draws upon over 14,000 studies in the last five years - some from early 2002. He even refers to the impact of the September 11, 2001 tragedy.I especially liked his technique of presenting both point and counterpoint studies for the impact of most of the herbs, hormones, diseases, exercises and general lifestyle factors he describes. He makes it clear when a statement is based on solid facts, when it seems likely based on some but not all studies, and when he is speculating - giving his personal opinion. This type of honesty is sometimes lacking from the medical profession. One of my favorite sections contains a quote from the head of a medical school who tells the incoming students that half of what they are about to learn is false; but that unfortunately, we don't know which half.I came away from this book with a much clearer understanding of how my brain works, what can happen to keep it from working optimally, and what I can do to help protect it.Since the research on herbs and drugs is changing so rapidly, much of this book will be out-of-date within a couple of years. It's my hope that Dr. Victoroff will write frequent revisions to keep us informed about these changes.In 2002, this book is a must-read for anybody with a brain, who wishes to keep it functioning.

In this alternately heart-wrenching and uplifting story, Jura's daughter, Golabek, a pianist, and writer Cohen trace the six years Jura spent in London, where she found surrogate families in the 31 other young refugees at the Willesden Lane hostel, and in the working-class British women at the East End garment factory that employed her. The authors beautifully capture Jura's passion for music and her determination to realize her dream of becoming a concert pianist. Her quest to win a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music seems to inject hope into everyone with whom she comes into contact: the hostel owner provides her with a piano and practice time, her housemates band together to drill her on technique and theory, and a co-worker makes her an audition outfit. Yet this is no Babes in Arms. Jura's struggle to hold herself together on the trip to England and as she makes a life for herself without the guidance of her beloved mother is as bleak as her musical successes are joyful. About the Author

A prolific recording artist and producer, Mona Golabek has appeared with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, the National Symphony, and the Tokyo Philharmonic. She has performed at the Kennedy Center, the Hollywood Bowl, and London's Royal Festival Hall. Golabek lives in Los Angeles, California. Lee Cohen is a journalist, screenwriter and poet. He co-produced and wrote the feature film The Effects of Magic and has collaborated with Mona Golabek on several projects, including a recording of Ravel's Mother Goose Suite featuring Meryl Streep. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife and son.

I met Mona in a coffeeshop. What a sweet lady! We talked for some time about how young people (my age 22 and younger) are seeing a trend of pop culture references that make light of the Holocaust and WWII. There are few survivors left, and someone needs to tell the stories the way they should be told, the way we should remember. Mona & Lee Cohen do exactly that in this book.They tell the heartfelt story of their mother Lisa Jura, based entirely on true stories and real people. Jura's family sent her to England as a young child on the Kindertransport, in hopes that she could use her brilliant talent as a pianist to make a life for herself. She had to leave her parents, sisters, friends, and neighbors behind. But despite her fears, loneliness, and confusion (why would the Nazis do this?), Lisa Jura always found a way to be thankful, polite, and appreciative of the good things in life.This is more than just a survival story; it's a story about how she and the other Jewish children refugees found ways to make their lives rich and meaningful in times when life didn't seem to make sense.This is a quick read -- in one sitting in case you get addicted, and can't put it down! -- and very uplifting. It reminds you to be thankful for what you've got, and not brood on what could have or would have been. I didn't know what to expect from this memoir-style book but ended up liking it very much. The real-life story of a young girl's escape from Nazi-occupied Vienna to the completely different world of London is compelling and touching. It's also informative about what life was like living in greater London during the heavy bombing. Kudos to the residents who "stayed calm and carried on." Such conditions are difficult to imagine.Lisa's determination is inspiring as she struggles to keep a promise made to her mother to continue her music studies. The lives of her closest friends in the refugee orphanage are also hinted at. They all served as a substitute family in place of the ones they left behind.I give it four stars instead of five only because the story is told second-hand. The author, Maya Golabek, is Lisa's daughter. She does a fine job of evoking the time and place and covering the major points of her mother's life. Still, it's always preferable to get such a story firsthand. But overall, this was an excellent book.

In what could be a depressing tale, the author shares the story of the Kindertransport in a personal and touching way that brings the story to life. Though I have read much about the victims of the Holocaust, this was the first I read of someone who was part of the transport which saved 10,000 children. A part of contemporary history that needs to continue to be told.

This book is another side of WWII. People are amazing in helping others in such difficult times and situations. May we all be so resilient and full of charity.

Have heard and read about the Kindertransport before but never the details of the lives led by the children once they got to England. The fact that they all survived is a blessing considering that most of their families perished.It was difficult to put down. I loved the way the children got along and helped each other. Also amazed at how helpful the English embraced and helped the children as much as they could.

A great book. I truly felt that I got to know these children who had no choice in leaving their families. Being brave enough to face the world without their parents guidance and having the drive to become successful. It was a wonderful heartfelt story. Looking forward to seeing the play "The Pianist of Willesden Lane" at Hartford Stage, CT in Spring 2015.

It was hard to read such inhumanity to man, but the sacrifice/love of parents for their children no matter how hard it was, was sole searching! The strength shown by Lisa and so many others was amazing...they didn't give up, even when they could have! I couldn't put the book down once I started. An excellent read for all ages...and it was true!

The Children of Willesden Lane is about some of the 10,000 children from the Kindertransport of 1938 - 1939. An absolutely excellent book that follows some of the children from 1938 through 1945. Much of the focus is on Bloomsbury House, which housed about 32 children from the transport. One of the authors of the book is Mona Golabek, the daughter of Lisa Jura, one of the children from the transport. This book has so much heartbreak, but also lots of joy. An excellent read.
