W. Somerset Maugham's "Of Human Bondage" is one of the best books I have ever read about the trials and tribulations that a human being goes through just prior to his teenage years, during his teenage years, and just before entering adulthood. The character of Philip, born with a club foot deformity, is a textbook, detailed, and analytic study of the formation and evolution that takes place in the mind and body of person as he passes through these turbulent years. It is also a social commentary about institutions, such as schools and churches, that are so rigid, unbending and unwilling to accept change that they become barriers to the growth and education of the human being and society as a whole. This is the first book that I have read by Mr. Maughan. It will not be the last. I loved this book.

Mr. Maugham's magnum opus unquestionably lived up to the hype. For many years I had started this book, only to be dissuaded by its overwhelming somberness and what seemed to be a bleak outlook on life. But that's just how it starts out!! The rest of the novel is as dynamic and filled with as much depth and soul as "Great Expectations" or Joyce's "Portrait." A bildungsroman like no other. The story follows the hapless Phillip Carey, as he makes his way through adolescence and young adulthood. He learns from an early age that life is brimming with tragedy: orphanned and club-footed, he is taken in by his vicar uncle and later attends a religious boarding school. These formative years, in which he experiences constant disappointment, have an irrevocable impact on his spirituality and worldview; God no longer exists for him and he's forced to search for another meaning to life. He travels through Europe, jumping from one occupation to another, ever indecisive about his calling. The novel carries through all his ups and downs, from the stimulation of Paris to the stagnation of London, from painter to healer. He experiences one existential crisis after another, as he goes through all his trials and tribulations. An especially bitter one for him is his dalliance with the femme fatale who becomes an object of obsession for him. Mildred is an odious human being, embodying just about every negative quality imaginable, and she manipulates poor Phillip every chance she gets. Never has unrequited love been quite so embraced by anyone other than Phillip. But it is only through her pettiness and selfishness that Phillip can realize who he is.As we see in the course of the novel, the world is a rich tapestry, and we must discover its meaning for ourselves. Phillip eventually realizes what this is, and it is this realization that allows him to endure the pain and emotional turmoil of it. It is truly an ordeal at times. But he learns to embrace another possibility, one pregnant with hope, a counterpoint to tragedy and misfortune.Besides Phillip and Mildred, the novel is rife with Dickensian characters, from the lovable Thorpe Athelny to the histrionic Miss Wilkinson to the poetic Cronshaw and the diffuse Hayward. Maugham's heart was always in the nineteenth century, as Gore Vidal notes. The influence of that era's literature and art is unmistakeable in every facet of his writing and the characters, in particular. They are a heart-warming cast that play off of Phillip's idiosyncracies and enrich all of his life experiences. This novel has my unreserved praise. Here is the bildungsroman at its finest, a novel that rightfully deserves its place in the canon. It exceeded all my expectations and left me craving more. What every book should be.

If you've never read this book, I urge you to give it a try. Maugham's classic has been in print for almost a hundred years with good reason. Its a long book, filled with fasciating minor characters, almost all whom reflect universal human traits that are as valid and important today as they were in 1915. The main story follows Philip Carey on his journey from a school boy to a successful doctor in England in the 1890s. Carey is burdened with a club foot and gets himself trapped in an obsessive relationship with a waitress named Mildred which almost ruins his life. The book is written in a straight forward, simple style that moves the story along at a fast clip. Maugham consistently violates the current taboo that tells young writers to "show don't tell." Maugham tells a lot and the technique works amazingly well. The book also serves as a historical document, detailing life in London, Paris and Germany in the 1890s. Overall is a great story about people the reader really grows to care about as the plot progresses. The emphasis on story telling and the absence of literary flourishes and tricks makes this a delightful reading experience. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a big, old fashioned novel about people and ideas that matter.

I've never wanted to yell at a fictional character as much as I wanted to while reading this novel. Philip is just a glutton for punishment and his story is so wonderfully told that it's no wonder this is a classic. He is very real - who hasn't felt conflicted sometimes, knowing you're being stupid but doing it anyway? And that ending... simply wonderful!

The Song of the Dodo: Island Biogeography in an Age of Extinction, by David Quammen

Review

A former Rhodes scholar, an award-winning essayist for Outside magazine and the author of two collections of articles and essays and of three novels, Mr. Quammen is, by trade, neither professional environmentalist nor scientist. He is a writer. And the book he has worked on for 10 years is intelligent, playful and refreshingly free of cant. . . . In Mr. Quammen's hands, the bad news of species extinction unaccountably uplifts. For it reminds us of nature's sheer, ornery diversity, and why it needs to be preserved. We share in the excitement of a new scientific discipline aborning. By book's end, we glean hints of hope that the future may not be entirely bleak. . . . Here is what a book can be. -- The New York Times Book Review, Robert Kanigel

From the Publisher

David Quammen's book, The Song of the Dodo, is a brilliant, stirring work, breathtaking in its scope, far-reaching in its message -- a crucial book in precarious times, which radically alters the way in which we understand the natural world and our place in that world. It's also a book full of entertainment and wonders. In The Song of the Dodo, we follow Quammen's keen intellect through the ideas, theories, and experiments of prominent naturalists of the last two centuries. We trail after him as he travels the world, tracking the subject of island biogeography, which encompasses nothing less than the study of the origin and extinction of all species. Why is this island idea so important? Because islands are where species most commonly go extinct -- and because, as Quammen points out, we live in an age when all of Earth's landscapes are being chopped into island-like fragments by human activity. Through his eyes, we glimpse the nature of evolution and extinction, and in so doing come to understand the monumental diversity of our planet, and the importance of preserving its wild landscapes, animals, and plants. We also meet some fascinating human characters. By the book's end we are wiser, and more deeply concerned, but Quammen leaves us with a message of excitement and hope.

This is one of the best books I have ever read. Quammen is a master science writer, on the level of Sagan, Asimov, and Schaller. This book belongs in every public library and should be required reading in high school and college science classes. Wonderful; poetic; informative. Quammen has the gift of making difficult concepts easy to grasp. He provides fascinating insights to many of the lesser-known scientists whose work has been largely eclipsed by more famous luminaries such as Darwin, without doing disservice to Darwin himself. I love this book.

This is surely one of the most important books on the environment to come out of the latter part of the 20th Century. It is highly readable for anyone who is really interested in how we have come to the environmental place we're at today, particularly in regard to species extinction. If you are familiar with Quammen's works then you know that he is a very gifted writer and explainer. In Song of the Dodo, he teaches by combining history, environmental science, personal experience and anecdotes--not to mention his wonderfully impish "gossip columnist" quality when he describes personalities and academic battles over major biological questions. That said, he is always respectul of the scientists he interviews and of their work and goes to great lengths to really understand it so that he can give his readers the most accurate version possible of the material he covers. Quammen traveled extensively to research and write this tome, visiting many islands and archipelagos that were, and I assume still are, used as models for how extinction happens on continents when we break up the natural landscape, leaving only patches of it that become like islands for the wildlife living on those patches. There is just so very much in this book! You will read both heartening and heartbreaking stories of attempts to save species on the brink of extinction. So much of this book seems deeply personal for Quammen and for the people he engages with. It is long--about 600 pages--but I swear I learned more than 600 pages worth in reading it. Toward the end of the book I could feel that little shift in my mind, that feeling of having broadened and deepened my understanding of something very important. I am excited to move next to Quammen's new book, The Tangled Tree. I would also recommend a new book to read in conjunction with Song of the Dodo, and that is The Human Planet: How We Created the Anthropocene.

This is a great book for anyone who has started a journey learning about Evolution but wants to understand a crucial ingredient that led to the discovery of Evolution; Island Biogeography. David Quammen is a gifted writer that understands his readers want the soul of the science rather than algebraic formulas, but who can handle key concepts. This book details a lot about pivotal figures of biogeography from Alfred Wallace to Robert MacArthur and EO Wilson, taking you into the history of it and then later expanding on issues of conservation that biogeography relates to. It’s also filled with tearful episodes that I won’t spoil, but needless to say that this book is a serious call to action for anyone to do their part.

Quammen is truly becoming one of my favorite authors. As a naturalist, the topics he writes about are interesting to me, but that's only a fraction of his charm. He also has a very anecdotal and "friendly" writing style that I find very engaging. How can I not be charmed by a man who concludes his chapter on biogeographic logarithms with, "Hello, are you still with me? Sorry about all that." He knows his audience. It took me a long time to read this book not because it wasn't interesting, but because it covered a wide-range of related topics. It was as if several good books had been rolled into one.The book focuses on biogeography. Quammen talks about the great people who've contributed to the field (beginning with Darwin and Wallace, of course,) and also talks about island extinctions (as they have been much more numerous than continental extinctions).I found the stories about Darwin and Wallace fascinating. The chapters on rare, extinct, and (unfortunately) introduced species were the best part of the book for me. He also talks about recent studies and debates like SLOSS. Then Quammen ends the book with his own trip to Aru after years of carrying around a copy of Wallace's The Malay Archipelago. My one criticism is in regards to the Kindle edition due to the page numbers and percentage. When I finished the book, it said I was only 60% done even though the chapters before the glossary end around page 600 out of 695. That's not 60% Kindle.I recommend this book to anyone with interest in islands, habitat carrying capacity, and the history of natural sciences. It's a sober topic and an eye-opening read, but Quammen throws in some of his charm and wit as needed and expected.

This is a dense book that takes a lot of attention, but it's well worth the effort. Quammen writes in a surprisingly breezy style for what is, in the end, a scholarly book. He talks about Darwin and Wallace and others and examines both how species originate and die off, with particular attention to the biology of islands. I'm still working my way through it, but it is engrossing, and, by the way, although I often read books on line, it's a book like this that reinforces the value of print, as I go back and forth to re-read some previous passage that sheds light on a new idea and mark pages that I want to come back to. Again, it's a heavy (both literally and figuratively) book, but I recommend it highly.

Love her! Bought this in advance, and even had someone go and get it signed by her because i am ill. She wrote such a nice message, and the person who got it signed said she was incredibly personable and spent a good amount of time with each fan. Love this woman.

The book came today and I sat down and basically finished it. You can really hear her voice in the writing and you can also really hear her passion for working hard, on lessons learned and the importance of family. I've always liked her TV show and the book really gave me insight into how houses are rehabbed and how a television show about rehab comes to be.

This book is wonderful! Nicole tells an amazing story. She lets you in to her life in a way that inspires and entertains. I can't recommend this book enough!

I have only watched a season of Rehab Addict. I like the show and Nicole. This book felt rushed and all over the place. I would have liked to know more of her thought process and planning process with each house she takes on, I feel she flies by the seat of her pants but not everyone's path to success looks the same. She's a fellow Michigander and I share her interests in house renovations and historic preservation, but I feel the book only barley touched the surface of her life and how she came to her success.

Review courtesy of TheTatteredPage.com*Warning: This review may contain spoilers. Read at your own risk.One-word Review: INSIGHTFULReading Tune: Game of Survival - RuelleOpening Line:My parents didn't exactly jump for joy when I decided to drive headfirst into adulthood by moving south with my boyfriend right after my high school graduation. My Review:First off, I have always enjoyed shows the centered on home renovation. Years ago, I saw Nicole's Rehab Addict, a show that incorporated my love for old house and home renovation and it was headed by a woman! I always wanted to go into revonation real estate and as a woman, seeing Nicole conquer it head on, I was immediately hooked. Better Than New was jsut as captivating as Rehab Addict, as it is informative and inspiring. An engrossing page turner, I could not put the book down. While not the most fantastical writing, the story felt genuine and that perhaps is what makes it so compelling. I was drawn into the story. The writing wasn't flowery or beat-arond-the-bush, instead it was direct and spoke to you on a personal level - as if Nicole was right there having a conversation with you.Readers got an exclusive peek into in the tell-all of Curtis’ life like never before.Curtis’ voice is that if an old friend telling stories of days past over steaming cups of hot chocolate. While I read the book, as aforementioned, I felt as if Curtis was talking directly to me. Her voice felt real, honest. She did not hold back. Not even the embarrassing moments or romantic blunders. We learned more about her post-Rehab Addict life, about her son and his father, about her struggles as a single-mom trying to find her way. How she turned her love for old house into a passionate career, how she landed the Rehab Addict television contract, her hopes and dreams and the not so made-for-tv blemishes.Coming from the standpoint of wanting to go into renovation real estate as well, I do wish there were more tips and tricks and facts about how Nicole went about renovation her houses. But, I realize purpose of Better Than New was to be an autobiography. Having said that, I do hope she would publish a work that included said desires. All in all, Better Than New is fresh, real and insightful. A treat for fans of Rehab Addict -- or any who desires to behind-the-scenes account. If you are a Rehab Addict addict then you will be obsessed with Better Than New. Read Better Than New, you will not be disappointed.Happy Reading!

Nicole is an incredible inspiration to watch on Rehab Addict and her written word is even better. She is totally candid about her trials and tribulations in her personal life and life as "Rehab Addict". She is the one person who made Rehabbing Properties a HGTV/DIY popular.Without Nicole Curtis, I doubt there would be so many of us watching "rehabbing" television. I hope she comes back to do more quality "Rehab Addict" shows. The book is easy to read and personal photographs are wonderful. Best of Luck to Nicole Curtis. She has inspired a whole generation.

I really liked how honest Nicole was about her life but felt sad that she had so many struggles and not a lot of encouragement in her life. She is a fighter, very tenacious! I appreciate that she stands on the side of life and loves her children so much. They are beautiful and so is she. I hope she finds the lasting love that she has looked for but never found.

I admit that I have been guilty of throwing money at a renovation because I had it to spend and I thought my end buyer would appreciate something new instead of something just repaired or recycled. Then I discovered Nicole's Rehab Addict show as I was flipping channels one day and I became a fan. I did notice her absence from TV and I wondered what had happened to her creative genius and drive. There are some unflattering you tube videos so it was really nice to find this book and find out what happened from her perspective. In some ways I think that I also have been "saved" by the homes I have renovated. Nicole is as much of a spitfire in this book as she is on her show. It is unfortunate that her personal life has been such a struggle for her. I like the way she is fiercely protective of her children and I hope that they will have the same relationship to her as she ages that she had with her grandparents. Hopefully Nicole will be able to reconcile with her own parents over time.

Review

A unique scholarly approach to the subject that is sure to be influential and highly regarded. (Robert Sapolsky, John A. and Cynthia Fry Gunn Professor of Biology, Neurology, and Neurosurgery, Stanford University)In Evolving Brains, Emerging Gods, E. Fuller Torrey offers a scholarly and insightful treatise on the neuroscientific relationship between humanity and deities. In his twenty-first book, one senses a profound vision of the hereafter in the arc of this eminent mental health advocate and researcher’s career, from whom we hope there will be more to come. (Jeffrey Lieberman, chair of psychiatry, Columbia University Medical Center and psychiatrist in chief of the New York Presbyterian Hospital, past president of the American Psychiatric Association)An excellent text that throws new light on where religious ideas come from. (Patrick McNamara, Director of the Laboratory of Evolutionary Neurobehavior, Boston University)A masterful synthesis that merges the archaeological and anthropological evidence for the evolving elaboration of religious activity with the fossil evidence for the neurobiological evolution of the human brain and the psychological evidence for the evolution of the human mind housed within that evolving brain. (Michael Rosenberg, University of Delaware)Presented in a manner that is accessible to nonscientists....[an] insightful, thought-provoking work. (Publishers Weekly)This is the book I have been waiting for, which brings together all of the various strands of data and ideas gathering in neuroscience, sociology, psychology, archaeology, anthropology and brain development, and integrates them into a well-balanced and tightly presented theory of the origins of religion. (Daniel Liechty Religion)

THE BRAIN, DEATH AND RELIGION: AN EVOLUTIONARY SAGA This is an intriguing book that presents a thesis of a biological basis for the development of the rudiments of gods and religion. This story begins with the evolution of the structures of the human brain and how they related to the progressive development of modern human thought, “the order of the mind theory”, which begins with the recognition of self, others, what others think of each other and themselves, the ability of projecting the present into the past and into the future and, finally, the development of the abilities to reason and to plan. The author specifically describes the changes in the brain structure accountable for each stage of the development of the human mind as determined by archeological morphology and confirmed by modern techniques of functional brain imaging. The text is illustrated with easily understood diagrams of brain anatomy and its functions. The author then describes how the evolution of the human mind coincided with the progression of human cultural development from the hunter- gatherer, to organized agriculture and husbandry, and finally to complex ancient civilizations. about which, the author provides much archeological information. As the human brain became capable of contemplating the future, homo sapiens confront the reality of death and its terrifying finality by entering the spiritual world thought to be stimulated by dreams during which communications occurred with the deceased giving rise to concept of life after death. Some deceased ancestors ultimately evolved as more important than others, “……thus the seeds of gods had been planted”. As the first ancient civilizations emerged the formal worship of gods evolved who not only provided spiritual needs and the promise of life after death, but were enlisted by secularly authorities to help enforce their rules and laws, thus, the birth of religions. Over a short period of 600 years the major religions of the world evolved. Finally, the author summarizes other alternate theories of the development of religion.

Fascinating book by an author who argues that the physical and cognitive abilities of our brains evolved from simple self-awareness to the ability to remember past and imagine future events resulting in, among other good things, the agricultural revolution (and beer) to some bad things like an awareness of our own deaths. The evolution of these abilities produced ancestor worship and, some 5-8,000 years ago a variety of gods. These gods were incorporated into religions that provided cognitive and psychological comfort in bad times, social and group support in the face of adversity and death, and, eventually, a belief in immortality, good and bad. (p.205) The author relies on his extensive knowledge of brain structure and functions, though some readers will find his contention that the cognitive development of modern day children recapitulates the thinking evolution of hominims and homo sapiens a bit hard to swallow. (p. 16) Likewise his dismissal of Freud's "discredited theories of religion" (p. 211) is a tad offhand. Freud reminded us that our long infancy and childhood dependence on adults could produce some strange ideas that precondition us for a belief in gods and evil forces around us. Torrey, incidentally, has little to say about the human ability to imagine an immortality in hell, once upon a time,a crucial force stoking fear in the minds of the living. Nor does he mention the philosophy of Epicurus, with its refreshing dismissal of the fear of gods, death, and posthumous punishment. On the other hand, the author does provide us with lots of curious and interesting nuggets: when white Australian gold-seekers stumbled on the good people of Papua New Guinea in the 1930s, the indigenous people at first took them to be gods, but changed their minds when they observed the Aussies"defecating, which seemed inconsistent with having a supernatural status." (p. 157) He also reminds us that 91% of Americans in a 2012 survey declared their belief in a God of some kind. (p. 1) I leave it to other readers to decide who showed more sense, the Papuans or modern Americans.

Wonderful compilation of putting archeological evidence of hominin's evolution to homo sapiens, normal development of modern humans and the history of religion! Fuller Torrey brings neuroscience and history of human evolution together in a well to understand format for the interested reader. No need to be an expert on any of the topics, but even experts will gain new insights. Great pleasure! Daniel

All those curious about, and especially those passionately interested in how we evolved into our kind of complex, planet- occupying hominid should read Dr. Torrey's book. Be patient with yourself in the first part of the book: it requires focus, and some re-reading, as he reviews what is known about the evolution of our brains. Once Dr. Torrey plunges into the development of groups, tribes, cultures, his book pulls the reader into its pages. This wonderful book is clearly the work of Torrey's love and passion over many years of study as well as travel--a synthesis of evolving information from the late 19th through early 21st Centuries. Evolving Brain, Emerging Gods is a superb and brilliant synthesis of current knowledge. I hope that it will be widely read as well as become assigned reading in our colleges and universities. It stimulates dialogue with oneself and definitely with others.

- First: Don't buy at full price. Some Amazon marketplace sellers are selling this as low as $9. I was expecting disappointment based on the low-balled price, but I was wrong!- Second: Don't confuse this with TSR AD&D 1st Ed Unearthed Arcana or Sword & Sorcery Arcana Unearthed. Both cool books.- Third: Don't read the Amazon description. It makes you think this book is all about strongholds for some reason...- A minor annoyance is that WOTC already have a DMG2 released and a Player's Handbook 2 planned, and the material herein would be better placed/organized into a larger 500+ page Player's Handbook and larger 500+ page DMG respectively or just merge all these things entirely. Monte Cook did it with a huge Arcana Evolved. Why can't WOTC do this? Why all the individual books (this one is barely 200+ pages)? It's stupid to flip through 100 different books to see all the different classes and races available, make 1 race book, 1 class book and so on...Everyone else is doing it (Moongoose, Green Ronin) but WOTC. I think Hasbro has enough money.- Its variants, house rules, and draws from a variety of sources and influences old and new as others have suggested. You have race variants (desert elf, aquatic gnome, etc. not terribly exciting), class variants (new paladins, etc., cool), Gestalt classes vs. multi-classes (nice), many "Bloodline" race-types (a succubus mates with a human creating a human with some demon bonuses - very interesting), Character traits and flaws, item familiars (very cool), insanity (which goes back to the original AD&D DMG 1st Ed), Rep and Honor (goes back to original AD&D Oriental Adventures 1st ED), Spell points instead of Spell memorization (fire and forget method) (many people use this spell pt house rule), the racial Paragon (sort of like a Prestige Race). On and on. Very neat stuff...Criticism that this book has contradictory rules or not-well-thought-out cohesiveness is missing the point. I like this book more than the regular DMG or PHB.

Ok, its time to start a new campaign and I've played everything there is to play (aside from the myriad of prestige classes that don't interest me). What am I going to play you ask yourself for hours. If you have ever had this problem, like me, probably because you've been playing D&D for far too long, this book is your savior, plain and simple.Back in second edition there was a game called Player's Option, if you recall, and it gave you a good deal of freedom to customize your character. This book goes well beyond that. Its actually quite interesting. There are little tweaks for all sorts of races due to climate or elementally based races. Follow this up with a lot of variants for classes which are basically swapping a few things in and out in most cases, sometimes losing a trait from one class and gaining another, while some are new. In my opinion, this adds a lot more depth to the game because if you do want to play one of the 10,000 prestige classes, it gives you more than one avenue to get to them. If you do not like prestige classes, then this gives you more options than the dozen or so base classes that currently exist. I would particularly recommend this if you're fond of playing Specialist Wizards (in which case this is a MUST), Barbarians, Monks, or have ever wanted to see a quality representation of an "Anti-paladin." This may be the section of the book you most commonly use, and that would be mostly at character creation. There are some feats, which are so-so on the usefulness scale but are just so very interesting and characterful. Then, traits to make your character more attuned to how you envision his personality, and flaws to give him special vulnerabilities (and of course there is a benefit to them as well). Its an interesting section to say the least but after that you get into some very wild and, indeed, very fun options, including a variant on weapon proficiency based on weapon groups, variants on armor systems, D&D without levels, and even D&D without hit-points. All I can say is, despite how crazy that sounds, someone obviously put a good deal of thought into it since it is at least mostly viable.Basically, if you're bored with D&D sometimes, this book is curry powder. It would DEFINITELY spice things up again.

this book is easily my favorite 3.5 book to own. it keeps the game fresh and offers modifications to some of less popular rules, or rules that some may think werent completely developed properly. adds in the addition of character flaws with the reward of more feats, get rid of spell slots for a more mana/MP type of casting, even class variants like fighters with sneak attack instead of bonus feats. the book keeps games fresh when you run out of official content to use and dont like most of the homebrew content. i would recommend this to ALL 3.5 players, even new players that havent explored all the regular official content

Good reading for those considering tinkering with the D&D 3.5 system. It presents some very interesting alternatives to give your game a different feel. The good news is that they are fairly thought out. Many of the "house" rules are extensively tested and they include information on the second and third order effects for the proposed changes. Generally, it convinced me to just leave the existing system alone for my games, but it's always there.I wouldn't buy if you're a player, much more of a DM resource. However, if you have a very flexible DM that likes external ideas, it might be worth a look.

A rules variants book. If you want to try changing rules to suit your need, it's a good book. I found very limited use for this book, though.

Easily the best RPG system I own: simple enough for beginners with enough room for complication for seasoned players. Very accessible and open for any campaign setting one can come up with and while I would recommend buying GURPS Magic and Ultra Tech, this book is really all you need to create any world. Most folks I know have left Dungeons and Dragons for this true to life, believable system, which perfectly balances character creation through use of point buy, akin to Hero System.

This book seems to have everything a beginner needs to get started. I'm given to understand there is a 4th Edition series out now, but I'm old; and a fan of the Old School Renaissance in gaming. Ergo, I realize that RPGs, unlike software, do not require "upgrades" to still be enjoyable. More, 3rd Edition GURPS is almost certainly cheaper, and probably just as enjoyable. I haven't had a chance to thoroughly master the rules yet, so I can't speak with total confidence in that though. We'll have to wait and see!

Excellent foundation to buld a campaign.Simple and complex at the same time, great system to pick and choose what to add to the base game in this book. The only glaring abscence in the base game is some basic super powers ,but you can add those on later.I must mention that the binding on the book is outstanding.

I used to love Fantasy Trip. But GURPS has grown too big, having a rule for everything. and sometimes ten. But the world books are all really good, so I just have to trim some of the rules forest down a bit, as Jackson does in GURPS Lite. Earlier editions like this one need less tinkering than the twice as big present version.

I have been playing in the GURPS system for about 10 years now, and I really enjoy it for the flexibity the system offers. Granted, the combat system can be a bit more cumbersome in comparison to easier RPG systems like D20. BUT, the way you can personalize your characters more than makes up for this. When you get tired of total hack'n slash and want to work more on roleplaying and character development, then you are ready for GURPS. The adventures you can have are totally up to your imagination. I have played/GM'd space adventures, swashbuckling, fantasy, WWII, and even post apocalypic style adventures.

This is definitely better organized than my original 3rd edition and it has new illustrations to look at. good buy!

Very cool book. Great deal and it was in great shape, i expected worse. Never got to play this when i was a kid, glad to pick it up.

Hours of entertainment.

The book’s front cover has been ripped off at some point and was taped back on with clear packing tape. To be honest, this text book looks like it was used in a street fight.

This textbook navigates you easily and clearly through topics. You can skip or switch them. Also, there are some good simply ideas about the science projects. Moreover, I love the colored pictures, but it is me!

Condition of the book was excellent. I bought it because this is the text in my son's class and it is a very large book to be toting back and forth to school everyday. Thank goodness it 12 years and therefore inexpensive to purchase.

Better than the book they gave him in school

good for price
