In this alternately heart-wrenching and uplifting story, Jura's daughter, Golabek, a pianist, and writer Cohen trace the six years Jura spent in London, where she found surrogate families in the 31 other young refugees at the Willesden Lane hostel, and in the working-class British women at the East End garment factory that employed her. The authors beautifully capture Jura's passion for music and her determination to realize her dream of becoming a concert pianist. Her quest to win a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music seems to inject hope into everyone with whom she comes into contact: the hostel owner provides her with a piano and practice time, her housemates band together to drill her on technique and theory, and a co-worker makes her an audition outfit. Yet this is no Babes in Arms. Jura's struggle to hold herself together on the trip to England and as she makes a life for herself without the guidance of her beloved mother is as bleak as her musical successes are joyful. A prolific recording artist and producer, Mona Golabek has appeared with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, the National Symphony, and the Tokyo Philharmonic. She has performed at the Kennedy Center, the Hollywood Bowl, and London's Royal Festival Hall. Golabek lives in Los Angeles, California. Lee Cohen is a journalist, screenwriter and poet. He co-produced and wrote the feature film The Effects of Magic and has collaborated with Mona Golabek on several projects, including a recording of Ravel's Mother Goose Suite featuring Meryl Streep. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife and son.

I met Mona in a coffeeshop. What a sweet lady! We talked for some time about how young people (my age 22 and younger) are seeing a trend of pop culture references that make light of the Holocaust and WWII. There are few survivors left, and someone needs to tell the stories the way they should be told, the way we should remember. Mona & Lee Cohen do exactly that in this book.They tell the heartfelt story of their mother Lisa Jura, based entirely on true stories and real people. Jura's family sent her to England as a young child on the Kindertransport, in hopes that she could use her brilliant talent as a pianist to make a life for herself. She had to leave her parents, sisters, friends, and neighbors behind. But despite her fears, loneliness, and confusion (why would the Nazis do this?), Lisa Jura always found a way to be thankful, polite, and appreciative of the good things in life.This is more than just a survival story; it's a story about how she and the other Jewish children refugees found ways to make their lives rich and meaningful in times when life didn't seem to make sense.This is a quick read -- in one sitting in case you get addicted, and can't put it down! -- and very uplifting. It reminds you to be thankful for what you've got, and not brood on what could have or would have been. I didn't know what to expect from this memoir-style book but ended up liking it very much. The real-life story of a young girl's escape from Nazi-occupied Vienna to the completely different world of London is compelling and touching. It's also informative about what life was like living in greater London during the heavy bombing. Kudos to the residents who "stayed calm and carried on." Such conditions are difficult to imagine.Lisa's determination is inspiring as she struggles to keep a promise made to her mother to continue her music studies. The lives of her closest friends in the refugee orphanage are also hinted at. They all served as a substitute family in place of the ones they left behind.I give it four stars instead of five only because the story is told second-hand. The author, Maya Golabek, is Lisa's daughter. She does a fine job of evoking the time and place and covering the major points of her mother's life. Still, it's always preferable to get such a story firsthand. But overall, this was an excellent book.

In what could be a depressing tale, the author shares the story of the Kindertransport in a personal and touching way that brings the story to life. Though I have read much about the victims of the Holocaust, this was the first I read of someone who was part of the transport which saved 10,000 children. A part of contemporary history that needs to continue to be told.

This book is another side of WWII. People are amazing in helping others in such difficult times and situations. May we all be so resilient and full of charity.

Have heard and read about the Kindertransport before but never the details of the lives led by the children once they got to England. The fact that they all survived is a blessing considering that most of their families perished.It was difficult to put down. I loved the way the children got along and helped each other. Also amazed at how helpful the English embraced and helped the children as much as they could.

A great book. I truly felt that I got to know these children who had no choice in leaving their families. Being brave enough to face the world without their parents guidance and having the drive to become successful. It was a wonderful heartfelt story. Looking forward to seeing the play "The Pianist of Willesden Lane" at Hartford Stage, CT in Spring 2015.

It was hard to read such inhumanity to man, but the sacrifice/love of parents for their children no matter how hard it was, was sole searching! The strength shown by Lisa and so many others was amazing...they didn't give up, even when they could have! I couldn't put the book down once I started. An excellent read for all ages...and it was true!

The Children of Willesden Lane is about some of the 10,000 children from the Kindertransport of 1938 - 1939. An absolutely excellent book that follows some of the children from 1938 through 1945. Much of the focus is on Bloomsbury House, which housed about 32 children from the transport. One of the authors of the book is Mona Golabek, the daughter of Lisa Jura, one of the children from the transport. This book has so much heartbreak, but also lots of joy. An excellent read.

The book is easy reading, very nice wording, the author wrote in plain Spanish. I did not like the part when she is talking about his family, and she presents herself like she is not from the Dominican Republic, like all those years outside make her surprise of everything that she sees in DR or Haiti. She is Dominican, why so much surprising!!!! Plus she born in a town, not even in a city. Anyway, the book is good reading.!!!

Pocas veces un libro lo va llevando a uno a darse cuenta de que no se trata de una novelita cualquiera sino que a travez de la narrativa nos muestra no solo el burocratismo de los paises latinoamericanos, sino de la enorme corrupción que ha dejado a Haiti en un estado de miseria enorme a pesar de que el mundo se volco a ayudar cuando sufrieron un terremoto que en otros paises hubiera sido leve pero debido a lo mal hecho de las construcciones, empezando por el Palacio de Gobierno cayeron y se derrumbaron.

I discovered this series through a random social media encounter - it was a Twitter discussion about self-published/indie authors - where I met the author. Do yourself a favor - read these books!In the first book - Prophecy of Three - we meet Lily, Evelyn, and Sara, three women in their very early 20's who are triplets but don't know it! They were all given up for adoption by their mother, Brigit, as a way of protecting them until they "came of age". These three were born witches and, if the prophecy was to be believed, they were very powerful ones. So powerful that they would be the only ones capable of stopping a dark force from another dimension that wished to subjugate the human race and rule the earth.As the second book - Souls of Three - opens, the triplets - Lily, Evelyn, and Sara - are taking a break from their "magical training". Lily has traveled back to Oregon to spend some time with those who raised her while Evelyn returns to New York City and her job with her adopted dad's company. During the trilogy, we get to know Lily's adopted family rather well. These two shorter books give us a chance to see what some of them - specifically, Rena, Emily, and Selma - were like in their younger years. But don't let the shorter length fool you - there is still quite a story packed into these shorter reads.Love, revenge, forgiveness, restored relationships, . . . it's all here. Wrapped up in a powerful story of three women who come to cherish the sisters they never knew they wanted.

Book1I truly love fantasy and magic, I also love a story that grabs me from beginning to the very end plus leaves me wanting more, Prophecy of Three did just that. I also love a story with characters that stay with you whether they are goodies or baddies if they are well written and developed these characters continue to live in my heart forever I have to say many of the characters in this book grabbed me and held me enthralled so much so I'm already into book 2 and hoping book 3 in this awesome trilogy is not far away.There really is something amazing about a book steeped in magic, mystery and a good dose of history that keeps me thinking about so many things, this story also had me busily researching historical and magical points as I read and that just made the story come even more alive for me.If I could give more than 5 stars I would for a first in a series Ashley McLeo has hit this one out of the ballpark for me.What a wondrous, magical adventure.Book2Witches, Vampires, Weres, Elves, Sirens, Daemons and so much more all wrapped up in one awesome story.Lily, Evelyn and Serah triplets, sisters, witches and maybe even something more. This story is so jammed packed without being totally overwhelming, there are so many threads to tie together and Ashley McLeo does that just brilliantly, there is more than enough action, adventure and magic with a dose or 2 of blissful happiness tossed in with some sadness as well, so basically you get the full gamut of emotions while your reading.A Marvelous, Magical read.

I bought this on my own, not a preview or free. Disappointed within first chapter! Steele used to have strong female characters, but the two in this srory are pathetic from the start. I have a tough time believing they are tops in their medical careers but have no common sense in their personal lives. The one involved with the married man is so obsessed with him it's just doesnt gel with her smarts in her career. I am already sick of her whining about it, for pages! So far, I find the characters one dimensional and formulaic. Wish I hadnt wasted the money on this book. I dont expect the great American novel from Steele, but her writing is not what it once was. Concept for novel was great, but characters are poorly conceived. Skip it!

Realistic characters, gritty settings and compelling drama! It's rare not to be drawn into a Danielle Steel novel within a few paragraphs of the first chapter and her latest release is no exception! With well-crafted words, we're transported quickly into the minds of four doctors, all working in trauma departments at different hospitals around San Francisco. Descriptive settings take us into a day in the life of each doctor without portraying it in a gruesome fashion that might detract from your enjoyment of the book. They are all drawn together to be part of a dual-city mass injury training venture with four doctors in Paris. The romance is light since there are multiple characters to center around, but the drama is spot on to carry you throughout the book. Really enjoyed it! Bill Browning heads up the trauma unit at San Francisco's most volatile emergency room. With his ex-wife raising his daughters in London, he throws himself into working around the clock and dreams of those moments when he gets to visit with his girls. This trip will bring him to their side of the world for a few weeks and he's beside himself with happiness about that. Stephanie Lawrence is on the fast track as a trauma doc at Mission Bay. She has two young sons and a work-from-home husband who grows more frustrated with the time she spends at the hospital every day. All she's ever dreamed of is so close she can taste it, she just needs to stay on track to lead it all one day. This training trip is going to be a sore point for her family. Wendy Jones is a leading trauma doctor at Stanford but her personal life is in a rut that she doesn't seem to be able to overcome. I've been reading D.Steel for decades, as great a writer as she is, the story lines are usually predictable. Not this book! I felt part of this one, like I was part of the cast, warm, happy, scared and finally relieved when all the characters found their paths in the end. Great job Danielle Steel!

Ok. I confess that I love Danielle Steel books. They are easy to read with a great balance of action with interesting characters. While they may seem predictable, the author always manages to deliver surprises. I love the relatively happy endings and how conflicts get resolved. The setting for this book includes the Bay Area hospital system and the hospitals around Paris.

It just seemed to ramble. Have been disappointed by many of her novels in recent years. Her characters, especially women, aren't as deep. And she will make a point and repeat it over and over and over. Takes on an almost sing songy cadence. The premise of this book was good but the story just fell short again.

The writing is so smooth making it easy to fall into the story. Jake and Cody are two of my favorite characters. I love seeing how Jake works through ideas and how Cody works/helps Jake. When I think the case is at a dead end. Jake always seems to figure out a thread to start pulling until he unravels the whole thing. His relationship with Cody is out-side of amazing! They completely are able to understand each other whether it is by vocal, silent or an eyebrow raise. I love their connection. Jake is a genuinely good guy. He might be annoying and have a big mouth but he also has a big heart. It comes out from time to time and makes me smile every time.I like the people connections Jake has made over the series. We always seem to see or have reference of those people again. Roxanne is the a tech for the PD. She is as interesting as Jake and Cody. I love how whip smart she is! Sarah, Beth, Terrell/Alicia, Agent McKay and Paul all add so much to this story. They all have a love/hate relationship with Jake but a Love/love relationship with Cody. I think Jakes snarky attitude is what ranks Cody higher.This story is always full of surprises. That makes this enjoyable to read. I never know what is going to happen next or really anytime. I am just riding along and shocked at or smiling at whatever has just happened. The Dear Reader at the end of the book is so wonderful to read. It talks about the tech and gadgets that appear in the book. I love reading this! Thank You Mark Nolan for all the work you put into this and each story. As well as telling us about it at the end of your books.I can’t wait to see what Jake and Cody do next!

I enjoyed the plot and even subplots of this thriller. Jake is involved in all kinds of controversies but has a goal to get the serial killer. He also has a dog.. killer dog but kindest to friends. At first I didn’t think the dog, Cody was needed in the book, but he grows on you and becomes a very happy add on to the book. Jake deals with all kinds of people: law, black ops, grumpy bosses, and even the mob. I thought the mob angle got too much .. glad the author didn’t throw in space aliens also. But between the dog and the mob ...keep the dog. Yet all blends well and even offers a romance angle. Seems Jake can get any woman he wants ( hey it’s a novel) but interesting how he stumbles into a relationship with one of the characters. This is a good book for those long flights or drinks by the pool. Wonder when the 4th book will be coming out. There is indication of an important mission. I wonder how the romance angle will play out? I’m ready.

Seriously, I am a sucker for dogs, but reading some of the other dog mysteries makes me appreciate this series even more. It posses tightly written stories that progresses at slightly less than the speed of of light with superb snark. And every character is still crazy....especially the dog!

The book has a good pace. You also get a good teaching on dogs, electronics and the military. The romantic entanglements drags the story down though it has a lot of female characters. It stretches the story out to almost boredom.

Mark Nolan's 3rd book in the Jake Wolfe and Cody series was anotehr great page turner! Can't wait for Mark's book number four to come out. This author tells a great story and you come to love in his characters. He keeps you wanting to start the next chapter when you think you need to put the book up for the night. Definitely a page turner!

I read the first two books in the Jake Wolfe series and was happy to find the third book. Once I started reading the book, I could not put it down. I am anxiously waiting for the next book.

Tom Ang is the author of more than 30 books, both in print and digital media. After reading the reviews of numerous other photography books available on Amazon(Kelby,Peterson, Miotke, and the PhotoWorkShop series)I came to the conclusion that you can't please everybody, and everyone has strong opinions about their dislikes.This book is published by DK, and those familiar with the dense slick graphics of that publishing line will have a very good idea as to what they are getting- a lot of material well-covered in a somewhat superficial manner. Photo examples are rather smallish (the "thumbnail complaint" mentioned by another reviewer is valid. ). I also understand why the writing style might NOT be to all readers tastes.However, for a non-mathematical, advanced beginner digital SLR book, I believe Ang's book really does stand out from the crowd. For more comprehensive and technical coverage of the subject there are other, more specialized texts. The Amazon price reduction makes this book especially appearing. I gave this book as a gift to accompany a new Canon Rebel XS- and the recipient was quite pleased with both the material and presentation in the Masterclass book.I'd recommend it for a starter.

Photography books can be expensive and many times not very helpful. This book is neither and you can be comfortable buying it if you are a amateur photographer who has been taking pictures for awhile.Masterclass may be stretching it a bit.But it is a really beautiful and easy to understand book that can help push you forward if you have got a grasp on the basics of hobbyist photography.

I got this book somewhat randomly from my local library. I liked it so much that I bought it through Amazon to keep as a reference.I'd classify myself as a serious amateur photographer. I have a Canon T2i.I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in improving their photography in a comprehensive way. I'm usually happy if I get a few tips that I can use out of a book. This book, however, had many great tips and ideas. It covers both the photographic aspect (taking the pictures) and the post production aspect (manipulating using software). The former it does in a fairly detailed way. The later in a more general way which provides some guidance, but mainly makes you aware of what is possible.I particularly liked the photo shoot "assignments" provided. I would have liked to see more, but the ones provided were great and in a format which would enable you to create your own.This book may not be for you if: 1. you have a fairly basic point and shoot camera or 2. you do not have access to photo editing software. However, if you don't have photo editing software, then this book may inspire you to get it.Again, this gets my highest rating, but note the caveats.

I would say I'm an advanced beginner. Far from professional, but not wholly clueless, either. I just received this book, and I LOVE it. I own several other (drier) photography books. Most all of them leave me wondering "why are the images so bland in a photography book?" This one does not. It's a very "pretty" book, well designed with many lovely, interesting (and varied) photos. The text is thorough without being verbose. Succinct and engaging. It really makes you want to read it. I love--and can't wait to work through--the "assignments" at the end of each chapter; they will make lovely practices for photographers of all levels. The in-chapter interviews are nice and add "extra voices" to engage you in the art. Yes, there is more here for a beginner (advanced peeps won't need things--like burn and dodge, for example--defined for them) but there is a lot to this book, and you can't simply call it a beginner's book. It has nice layers of depth in each chapter. It's a wonderful conversation on photography, and --if for some reason you never 'use' it--it would be a lovely coffee table book. Love it.

This book is suited to learn the intricacies of digital photography. Well written lots of example and assignments to practice what you have just read.One of the good things is the photo analysis that highlights what is good or bad about a photograph. You don't have to agree with the analysis but you will get to understand another view point on the art.The target audience is the more advance photographer. I would highly recommend this book to help take your photography to the next level.

I have lots of digital photography books and subscribe to the usual digital photography magazines in hopes of improving my DSLR skills. This is the best, single, all inclusive, digital photography currently on the market. Its well-laid out, the author's prose is not burdened with technical jargon and the photo examples are especially good when used to illustrate techniques. My only criticism is that some of the photos, because of their size, are a bit too small to really see the differences a technique or camera setting might make. (but then, the book does have size limits) If I were going to buy two photography books that would help improve my understanding of digital photography, inspire me to make better photos and contained examples of great photography, this would be my first choice. My second book would be Joe McNally's "The Moment It Clicks." Its a bit pricey if bought at the list price, but its well worth the money. Buy it and you will never regret the purchase.

Experience is the best teacher. It's a great book to have at hand. But how you benefit from it is in your hand. Even if you read lots of books on how to swim, you will not learn unless you go into the water.Honest advise, replicate samples of picture composition of Tom Ang from his book. Get a notebook and write down the formula (speed, opening, lens, files number, etc) and you will learn a lot. Or simply write down info in word doc with your photo.
