When I Was Your Age, Volume One: Original Stories About Growing Up, by Amy Ehrlich

From Publishers Weekly

Some of the entries in this memorable anthology are hauntingly sad and several are sharply witty; every single one is expertly crafted and engrossing. In response to Ehrlich's request for an autobiographical story, 10 accomplished children's authors have contributed original pieces that underscore both the diversity and timelessness of youth and adolescence. Sibling rapports and rivalries, feeling alone, and the fervent quest for parental approval and peer acceptance are common threads here. Mary Pope Osborne describes her uncommon attachment to a rubber ball, a gift from her father on the eve of his departure for post-war Korea. Avi humorously recounts his attempt to save face during a rain-drenched camping trip with two friends. In two of the collection's hardest-hitting tales, Susan Cooper shows how World War II invades the already beleaguered life of a British schoolgirl; and Francesca Lia Block describes a sensitive girl coping with her mother's desertion. Each contributor follows up his or her story with a brief but enlightening commentary. Fans of all ages will savor these perceptively chosen, affectingly disclosed episodes from the lives of favorite writers. Ages 9-14. Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal

Grade 5 Up?Ehrlich asked 10 children's book authors to contribute a story based on their childhoods. The result is a fascinating glimpse into a variety of times, places, plots, and people. Some of the selections are funny, some sad, some a mixture, but they all express feelings and describe situations that young people can identify with?whether it is Laurence Yep's discovery that his father really loved him for himself or Walter Dean Myers's friends trying to get even with the adults who spoiled their fun, or Mary Pope Osborne's revelation of how she held on to a deflated rubber ball, a gift from her soldier father, until he returned safely from the war in Korea. Each story is followed by a note from the author that explains to what degree the incidents are true and why the piece was submitted. The writing is of such high caliber that all the stories sound true and readers are sure to believe that the incidences described really happened. It is a disappointment then, to learn that a particular story, or part of it, is fiction. A picture of the author as a child precedes each entry. The selections are so varied and so well written that children will find at least one they would enjoy reading. Librarians will have to encourage their students not to judge this book by its dull cover, but to open it so they can be entertained by 10 master storytellers.?Nancy P. My 10 yr old daughter likes reading this for homeschool. It is a well written book for Language Arts and Reading as it teaches young readers perspectives and emotions in literature that they can understand and makes them think at the same time.

I'm not sure how receptive my fifth graders will be to this text, but I thought it was boring and lacked a lot of excitement.

great condition

I loved this book for my 5th grade memoir unit! Great condition and a quality text to help teach memoir!

Using to teach biographies/autobiographies and personal narrative. The students enjoy hearing from the different authors and seeing the different writing styles.

The cover was a little worn, but still in good condition. It was well worth the money I paid for it. Thanks!!

Awesome collection of memoir written by very good writers. I use this with students 11 to 14 and it works with all of them. Beautiful writing. Lots to learn.

Bought this for a friend. I like that it breaks down into daily things to do. The daily passages are short and easy to do. The only thing that I don't care for is that the book references mostly "My higher power" instead of "God". And other places they state "God". I know they used "My higher power" since not all people believe in God, but the inconsistency of using it sometimes and sometimes not then rules out their initial purpose of using it. I wish it would state "God" throughout. But other than that small issue, it's a great book and I can't wait to give it to my friend to use daily in his sobriety journey.

As a counselor working in an inpatient detox facility, I find this book invaluable. It's short but poignant readings make it the perfect way to start a group conversation. It really gives the clients something to reflect upon. I highly recommend this book to anyone who needs a little motivational boost in their day.

Keep It Simple is indeed simple to use and apply to daily living The format is familiar to many: a quote of the day, often from the Big Book, followed by a meditation, prayer, and lastly an application or action step to carry into and through the day. On my Kindle, Keep it Simple does indeed make it simple to follow my program daily!

These Daily meditations have been a companion for years. Christian-based, they nonetheless offer a universal, simple focus for the day. I've used these little meditations for years, in my own life and n training programs for people in recovery and/or working with those seeking serenity in their lives.

I prefer "Touchstones" over this book. This one has too much of the original 12 Steps quoted in it. If I wanted the 12 Steps I would purchase a "12 x 12" book. A lot of godcrap in it, too!

This book really helps me and some of my closest friends. It reminds you that you have to take things one day at a time and how important it is to work on the small/simple things first and not to try to take on the whole world at once.

Wow - this book is awesome. I have several med. books but this one never fails to give me daily inspiration in plain spoken yet decisive manner. I love the actions recommended. Very happy I bought this.

I would recommend "Keep it Simple" for anyone that may want a clear and understandable interpretation of the 12 step program. If anybody follows the books ethics, you will become an asset to yourself and everybody else.

The series carried on past where the writers were giving it their full focus. The first novels were about Zoey Redbird, and told from her perspective. Then the writers added other perspectives and more and more. The last novel had so many perspectives it was hard to keep them all straight.I was also disappointed in the ending. Zoey was given special powers by Nix to fight Neferet with elementals. That whole special part of Zoey was forgotten by the ending. Instead of having to trick Neferet into an existing grotto Zoey or Stevie Ray could have asked Earth to create a 1000 foot deep shaft similar to how a tunnel had been created from the terminal underground to the Cat rescue nuns. Zoey could have called fire to flame out the black snakes as she had done to the Raven Maker who cut her. The Elementals which had figured as important powers in the first books were lost. They ended up not using "Old Magic" to remove Neferet's immortality. We are never told how Neferet became immortal but if Old Magic created it then Old Magic might have removed it. Neferet is left confined but not dead. Is that so the writers can bring her back in a future book? Disappointing. And Heath never figures out he was reincarnated by Nix to be back with Zoey. But Heath is sacrificed (how?) to confine Neferet in a shallow grotto rather than in a deep shaft. So Neferet wasn't dead, but Death died without going to Nix. That was irrational and unsatisfactory. And what about Aphrodite? I kept hoping someone would ask Nix to restore her Vampire status. Nobody ever even asked. What was to become of Aphrodite? The creation of a North American Vampire Grand Council was stuck on at the end without much explaination or notice to LA, Chicago, and other Vamp schools in North America.Overall I had to conclude that the writers had made it too complicated with too many characters, told from too many perspectives, and no longer their primary interest. It was just quickly ended without much thought or due diligence.

I enjoyed the first couple of books in this series despite the teen-speak (which sounded like nothing no teenager had ever spoken before). I enjoyed the concept of a vampyre finishing school. This book was okay, but not great. We never see why exactly Kalona changed his mind and decided to come back to the side of "Light." Nothing is particularly new. He realized that he cared for his favorite son, but wasn't this obvious even when he was on the side of evil?Zoey is still a Mary-Sue. At the beginning of the novel, she turns herself in for murdering two humans and expects to face righteous consequences (in her case, death). Who does that?Aurox sacrifices himself to entrap Neferet. What? How does he accomplish this and why couldn't it have been done before? There is no explanation, only the events. Why do humans flock to the HoN for protection when the media has previously made vampyres out to be bloodthirsty creatures? Nobody knows. The romance between Shaunee and Erin seemed rather forced, as if to pacify fans that liked Erik and were disappointed that he was without a love interest after Shaylin became involved with Nicole.Lastly, and this is not an all-inclusive list, it seems that Neferet being trapped like Kalona was a really anti-climactic end to the series. Of course, I knew Zoey and her friends would triumph, but come on.. would Neferet the evil genius really approach Zoey in a nigh-abandoned park and attempt to battle with her? I think not.I give it three stars because, while I was reading the majority of it, it was somewhat compelling. I enjoyed Lynette. This one is not really an issue I had with the conclusion to the series, but it would have been nice if the authors described Zoey's circle's adult vampyre tattoos.

Sadly I am relieved this series is over. When I first started reading Chosen years ago I was so hooked I couldn't get enough of the plot and characters, but I feel the series has been drawn out for too long and has lost much of it's purpose. Zoey didn't really grow and progress as a heroine and many of the other characters fizzled as well. This book was so worked up to and talked about that I thought it would finish with a big exciting finale that would make up for the dullness of the last couple books but unfortunately the big ending I was excited for turned out to be a very anticlimactic and disappointing dud :(

I liked this series in the beginning. It was interesting then, but it was drawn out to long. This series should have ended far sooner. I won't give anything away, but this book has a lot of build up to it and then just a blah ending. Glad it is over.

If there was an option to give it a zero I would give it. This book was awful. Short juvenile sentences. Story lines that are completely irrelevant to the prior 10 books. People that pop into the story just so we don't forget that they existed in prior books. And end battle worthy of a 6th grader. I struggled to read the book and only forced myself because of all the time invested in the prior books. I guess I was hopeful that the book would eventually turn out ok.

When house of night first came out I fell in love with Zoey and her world. I would read in the bathroom at work in class it didn't matter. But the last couple of books had me dying for an ending which was long overdue. The series was starting to lose its ability to surprise me and I found the turns in the plot less and less entertaining. In this book Zoey lets me down as a main character, she fails to rise to the standard she needs to be at and it makes it hard for the reader to continue to sympathize with her at all. Especially when she's nonsensingover boys while the world needs saving. If this is your first time reading a review by P.C Cast don't take this to reflect all of her books! She's an amazing writer!!! In fact I would still recommend this series, I just wasn't impressed with this book.

Review

“In this fascinating, heartbreaking memoir, Tweedy documents his experiences as an African American doctor in a medical system that can be 'just as sick as its patients.'” ―O, The Oprah Magazine“Tweedy reveals all you need to know about the Byzantine health care system, wide-ranging disparities that persist and, more important, how we can take control of our well-being...Black Man in a White Coat is certain to garner incredible attention during the literary awards season. It's a book that deserves a very long shelf life.” ―Essence“In ways wholly individual but similarly intricate, Margo Jefferson, Dr. Damon Tweedy and Ta-Nehisi Coates examine the impact of race on our expectations and experiences. And in doing so, they challenge us to as well.” ―Time“Riveting.” ―Entertainment Weekly, The Must List“On one level the book is a straightforward memoir; on another it’s a thoughtful, painfully honest, multi-angled, constant self-interrogation about himself and about the health implications of being black.” ―Sarah Lyall, The New York Times“[A] heartfelt account... Black Man in a White Coat is a commentary on challenges and lessons [Dr. Tweedy has] encountered as a physician of color, offering first-hand truths about the medical issues and racial divides in health care plaguing our community.” ―Ebony“Fascinating… What sets this book in motion is Tweedy’s dogged quest to understand how his personal experience relates to the staggering issue of health care inequality. In the process, he shines a light on disparities than can be hard to fathom…. An engaging, introspective memoir that will force readers to contemplate the uncomfortable reality that race impacts every aspect of life, even medicine…. A timely, thought-provoking examination of our heartbreaking health care system.” ―USA Today“Black Man in a White Coat offers a clear, informative and uncommonly balanced assessment. Tweedy unflinchingly examines historical patterns of racial inequity in health care. But he also brings attention to often-overlooked indicators of progress…. Attentive to the frustrating inequalities rooted in our history, Tweedy’s Black Man in a White Coat is also usefully attuned to the promising prospects ahead.” ―Randall Kennedy, The Washington Post“While many doctors write books―the Greek physician Ctesias in antiquity, Atul Gawande today―few have concerned themselves with race. Black Man in a White Coat: A Doctor's Reflections on Race and Medicine is Tweedy’s thoughtful answer to that gap.” ―Newsday“Tweedy’s vulnerability makes him a vivid and engaging narrator…. [Black Man in a White Coat] makes important contribution to the ongoing debate about health care in America. Tweedy has advanced a much-needed public conversation about racial disparities in medicine which, while less familiar to most Americans than the deaths that inspired the Black Lives Matter movement, continue to cost black lives.” ―The Boston Globe“A powerful case on how, in the era of Obamacare and the nation’s first black president, race can still determine who gets sick and lives, or dies.” ―Minneapolis Star Tribune"A revealing, moving, and courageous examination of racism in American health care ...[Tweedy's] willingness to be self-critical as well as his reluctance to be overtly partisan gives Tweedy’s book an evenhandedness that lends its conclusions added weight, even when he wades into partisan waters."―The Daily Beast“Required reading for African-Americans and health care professionals.” ―Raleigh News & Observer“Tweedy uses vivid anecdotes to ground his critiques of physician prejudice and health concerns that affect his community… It’s this investment in the personal that makes Black Man in a White Coat especially powerful. Tweedy’s perspective―and his willingness to challenge his own fundamental biases―puts a voice to a social epidemic that demands to be addressed.” ―Maclean's"Black Man in a White Coat is a thoughtful memoir that explores the nexus of race and medicine through the eyes of a black physician."―Los Angeles Review of Books“Tweedy, an African American psychiatrist at Duke University, expertly weaves together statistics, personal anecdotes, and patient stories to explain why 'being black can be bad for your health'... A smart, thought-provoking, frontline look at race and medicine.” ―Booklist, starred review“An arresting memoir that personalizes the enduring racial divide in contemporary American medicine.... In this unsparingly honest chronicle, Tweedy cohesively illuminates the experiences of black doctors and black patients and reiterates the need for improved understanding of racial differences within global medical communities.” ―Kirkus Reviews“Eye-opening...[Tweedy's] painful anecdotes, both as an intern and physician, show the critical health crisis within the black community....[and] he nicely unravels the essential issues of race, prejudice, class, mortality, treatment, and American medicine without blinking or polite excuses.” ―Publishers Weekly“A must-read for anyone interested in improving medical care from training to delivery in a world where race persists as a factor in life and death.” ―Library Journal“[Tweedy] brings an interesting and valuable perspective on healthcare in this country for all of those who are less privileged, without being preachy or political. It's a clear view from a man in a white coat.” ―Carol Fitzgerald, BookReporter“In this thought-provoking memoir, an African-American doctor discusses not only how ‘being Black can be bad for your health,’ but also the complex cultural and physiological reasons why.” ―Refinery29, Fall’s Most Highly Anticipated Nonfiction Reads“I could not stop reading Damon Tweedy's Black Man in a White Coat: A Doctor's Reflections on Race and Medicine, an engrossing look at the modern medical profession from a unique and often unheard perspective.” ―Patrik Henry Bass of Essence Magazine“A sincere and heartfelt memoir about being black in a mostly white medical world. Essential reading for all of us in this time of racial unrest.” ―Sandeep Jauhar, author of Intern: A Doctor's Initiation and Doctored: The Disillusionment of an American Physician“An eye-opening and compelling examination of medicine's continued discomfort with race. Damon Tweedy is unafraid to dissect both the intriguing and disturbing elements of becoming a doctor. Required reading for anyone wishing to understand medicine in America today.” ―Danielle Ofri, MD, PhD, author of What Doctors Feel: How Emotions Affect the Practice of Medicine“Damon Tweedy eloquently weaves the experiences of an African-American physician with those of African-American patients, carefully documenting how issues of race-too often unspoken-permeate American medicine in this timely and necessary book.” ―Barron H. Lerner, MD, PhD, author of The Good Doctor: A Father, A Son and the Evolution of Medical Ethics“Everyone interested in Medical Education should read this book.Tweedy's writing is clear and compelling as he describes his experience as a black medical student and resident in a predominantly white southern university. This book inspires hope that racial prejudice is diminishing in medical education and patient care. It is an optimistic commentary on the future of American Medicine.” ―H. Keith H. Brodie, MD, President Emeritus Duke University

As the title suggests, this is an must read for anyone who is interested in how race and medicine intersect, from the development of young black talent to the unfortunate racial disparities in health care delivery and outcomes. The narrative is engaging and instructive without being preachy, overbearing, or simplistically pretending to have solutions to deeply rooted and complex problems. It is like having a good conversation with an old friend.I had the good fortune to walk the halls of Duke with Dr. Tweedy (when he was "Student-doctor" Tweedy) and can attest that very little poetic license has been taken in this work - the narratives are true and largely unmarred by time and emotional content. Perhaps this is what makes his stories so powerful and instructive, and relevant to people of many backgrounds. Dr. Tweedy's ability to turn disappointments and injustices into opportunities for personal growth and even policy making make for a compelling read as well.Readers from many backgrounds should find "Black Man In A White Coat" appealing, beneficial, and perhaps even transformative. If you have an interest in the etiologies and possible remedies of racial disparities in health outcomes, this book provides an excellent introduction to the scope of the problem in an engaging narrative form. If you are a practicing medical provider, this work can make you a better doctor - it provides an opportunity for self examination, encourages self-awareness of stereotypes we all carry around, and brings to the forefront the complex "perfect storm" of factors that lead to racial health disparities. And if you are an aspiring minority professional, the grit that Dr. Tweedy demonstrates throughout this work will serve as an inspiring example (much like those of Dr. Ben Carson and Dr. Keith Black) and to some extent a road map to navigating the slow to change racial landscape still encountered in the academic and professional world. One last piece of advice - although this book is written in a easy to read narrative form, make no mistake - it represents not only a life experience, but also is the product of many conversations and much scholarship. Take advantage of the copious "Notes" section following the main text, and consider using this book as an opportunity to explore primary source material referenced to further enrich your experience.Bravo Dr. Tweedy!

Dr. Tweedy has done the country a favor by writing this book. Using his own experience, he pens interesting anecdotes to illustrate his point: that race is a factor in the degree of access and quality of health care available to Americans. I found particularly chilling one story about him visiting urgent care after a weekend basketball injury (twisted knee). He was dressed in a sweatshirt and tennies. The doctor gave Tweedy a perfunctory exam and directions for aftercare, whereupon Tweedy asked a followup question including the term "left third metacarpal fracture." The doctor sat back down and basically started the exam over, this time ordering (and accompanying Tweedy through) Xrays, recommending a brace, lending him crutches, and offering a prescription. Reflecting on the event, Tweedy said,"I couldn't get out of my mind how I'd been treated as two entirely different patients. Damon Tweedy, the unknown black man, dressed like he was about to mow the lawn, couldn't get the doctor to look him in the eye or touch him; Damon Tweedy, M.D., was worthy of personal, first-class service...Was Dr. Parker aware that his initial lack of attention had been unfair and insulting, leading him to overcompensate (later)? Perhaps, but...he evidently saw me through a mental filter, and his assumptions were not positive..."There were a ton of interesting anecdotes like this, which made the stats and citations go down more easily. I regret that this situation exists, and as a layperson I don't know what to do about it except be aware, and thank Dr. Tweedy for writing this important book.

I am thoroughly enjoying Dr. Tweedy's memoir. He and I have shared many experiences, me 50 years before and protected by a hide of a different hue.Tweedy puts the personal touch on a number of issues of intense concern to all of us today: income inequality, our third-world healthcare system (yes, with 40 million uninsured we are no better than a banana republic!), the racist leitmotif that pervades current practices. There is no other explanation for the results we see in our outcomes when they are laid out by race.Through his heartfelt examples, Dr. Tweedy reemphasizes that we still fall short of our founders' aspirations even though we have the riches and wherewithal to provide everyone with quality, affordable healthcare. A system that results in inferior care for the poor (too often a surrogate for skin color) fails to meet the ideals we have set for our nation and weakens us all.Cry, my beloved country! I see little progress - even serious backsliding - since I graduated from medical school 55 years ago. President Obama often said, "We are better than this!" I once thought so, but I no longer am so certain.

Dr. Tweedy is a talented writer who provides a fascinating look at the process of developing from being a medical student to becoming a doctor. Some of the challenges he faced come from being a black male in a medical world where black males are often close to non-existent. In fact, even in 2016, there are some medical schools without even one American-born black male students. His response to the challenges he faced was to simply outwork everyone else. He did not allow himself to become discouraged. I sent a copy of his book to a college student in my family. Every college student has days when the work seems to much or a class seems to difficult. Dr. Tweedy's message is that young people need to set goals, not get discouraged, and by focusing all of their energy and time on their work, they can succeed. Perhaps that is an old fashioned approach to success, but Dr. Tweedy makes a convincing case that it does in fact work.

The main question discussed in this book is: what are the patterns of successful books, songs, applications etc.? The "scientific" way to research such a question is to analyze a representative sample of successful and unsuccessful cases, in order to find the features that exist in the successful cases and does not exist in the unsuccessful ones. This book however analyzes successful cases only. It points at some features that are found in many hits, but ignores the possibility that these features characterize many flops as well.

I bought this book because it was already popular, a behavior predicted early in the book itself. Having said that, I thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s well written, witty, very energetic, and thoroughly researched. I’d share it on my Twitter feed if I had more than eight followers. (The good news from Thompson is that I’m not alone.)The question of what drives hitdom can be esoteric to the point of incomprehension when the psycho-sociologists wrestle with it, or dry as burnt toast when the statisticians do. Thompson, however, addresses the question anecdotally, using facts and figures to fill in the blanks. The result makes for very relatable reading. As a sexagenarian who lived in China for much of the last decade I have to admit that some of his cultural references were totally lost on me, but that’s certainly not the author’s fault. We learn at many levels concurrently and this book taught me a lot.I particularly liked the section devoted to the debunking of the myth that anything really goes viral on the Internet. It makes sense. Far better to be friends with Kim Kardashian, if you want to be famous, than it is to think you’re going to come up with the world’s cleverest meme. And someone finally gave us the full story on the historic success of Fifty Shades of Grey, although he kept to the marketing issues and wisely didn’t try to explore the deeper issue of why that content was so enthusiastically received. And, yes, I did read it. As a devout reader I felt I had to, given its incredible success. That, too, was predicted by Thompson. If you are trying to market yourself as an artist or author Hit Makers is a must read plus. It’s filled with money quotes. Here’s one: “Publicly, people often talk about issues. Privately, they talk about schedules. Publicly, they deploy strategic emotions. Privately, they tend to share small troubles. Publicly, they want to be interesting. Privately, they want to be understood.”Following the laws of Pareto, authors typically spend most of their time on the first and last paragraphs of a book. Between those bookends, some books start strong and lose steam. Others pick up momentum as they go. This one follows the latter trajectory and is well worth the reader’s investment and patience.

Interesting read and it certainly had some insights. Worth the effort for anyone marketing/selling products that need to stand out in a world of competitive and similar items, i.e., books, music, movies, etc. Could have benefited from tighter editing; the book tends to ramble a bit, never seems to present a definitive approach to maximizing one's chances of having a hit. Granted, it's a soft and squishy target but the author would have done well to bring his discoveries together into a "best practices approach" to maximizing the chances of success.

The first 3 chapters of this book were good and got me hooked (particularly about industrial design with Raymond Loewy and speech-writing with Jon Favreau). However, the first 3 chapters pretty much said it all. I particularly enjoyed chapter 2 on Raymond Loewy, his story was really fascinating, and I do wish that the author had devoted even more pages to this famous industrial designer (likely this chapter appealed to me because of the engineering aspect--yes, that "familiarity" or “aha” moment). The rest of the chapters were pretty much a rehash and overemphasis on concepts already introduced in the first 3 chapters.Around chapter 3 though, the book started to be less interesting (except for the part on speechwriting). The other reviewers who mentioned that the book seemed to heavily emphasize on the music industry were right. The book had a mix of too much detail/minutiae devoted to people in the music industry and certain songs (certain paragraphs would be listing song after song after song). And then the book would sometimes have stories that just didn't have enough detail (see paragraphs below). I would’ve actually liked to hear more about Savan Kotecha! And I’m not a music person, but it sounded like that his story had an interesting beginning, and we just didn’t get to read the complete story. It almost appeared that the book was made up of a collection of the author's notes taken on interviews that he had with a person. However, most of the topics—save for the first two chapters—are severely lacking in critical analysis. That I would have been fine with—since some authors prefer not to influence the readers—but then at least present the full details of each story that is being told so that the readers may decide for themselves how to analyze the situation. But this story appeared to be trying to do too many things at once, instead of focusing on being good at a couple of industries.Like the ESPN example the author gave in his book, he should focus on trying to be very good at a couple things than trying to hit a bunch of different industries. My suggestion for the author would be to refocus his attention on the two areas that he emphasized heavily on—namely, screenwriting, songwriting, and news media (my personal preference would have been an emphasis on engineering and science, but the author’s coverage of the entertainment and news media industries makes it seem like he’s more comfortable with those areas).I was very interested in the chapter concerning why certain books are a hit—like Fifty Shades of Grey—and I loved the part dedicated to John Snow on epidemiology with regards to analogizing “viral” outbreaks with popularity/broadcasting. But again, the examples seemed to be lacking in sufficient detail to tie it cleanly in with what might’ve caused that “viral” popularity. We can only rely on the author’s assessment of the situation to provide any sort of guidance on that; but readers are not provided with enough data to determine whether his assessment appears to be fairly accurate or not.Another example: why mention that Microsoft hires the most anthropologists behind the government, and then not even mention about how those anthropologists are used in Microsoft’s research? Again, an unfinished storyline. And as a side note, I really did not like the interludes. They were just not that interesting at all, and added almost nothing of value to the book (though the interlude on how teenagers’ brains are really hardwired differently, which explains why their judgment is bad, was an interesting note).Overall, the book seemed to be a collection of unfinished thoughts and storylines, or some stories that just dragged on too long, or just didn’t provide enough research data for the reader to be able to make some type of independent analysis from it. It’s a shame, because the author appeared to have spent a lot of time interviewing people and doing a fair amount of research, but just couldn’t quite figure out how to put all the pieces together into a cohesive analysis or writing. A good effort, and the first 3 chapters were worth reading, but the rest of the chapters were a little too drawn out to explain simple concepts.

I love this book! It is very inspirational for someone like me that is learning about wildflowers but does not know exactly where to start looking for them. I have lived in Minnesota for over 40 years and have never heard or many of the natural areas listed in the book. Not only are the flowers and photos spectacular, but the book also is a guide to the unique natural areas in Minnesota where one may go and explore and also what time of the year would be best to find a particular wildflower. It is also a fun "road trip" book. I am excited to go out and explore these natural areas and am inspired to find some unique wildflowers.

Well written. Beautiful photos. Easy to reference flowers and areas to locate them

great pictures very helpful in indentification

If you hike Minnesota, a must have!
